Snow watch 2017/18

I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

West Midlands here. I love on quite a busy road. No tracks so far.. worried we will be snowed in

BabyOrSanta · 10/12/2017 06:07

I hope you can get out candle!
Either that or do you know anyone with large dogs and a pallet?

exLtEveDallas · 10/12/2017 06:31

Well that's me (and the dog) hibernating today. We must have had at least 4 inches of snow overnight. There is no way I'm moving today; the snow is on top of ice from yesterday as the gritters didn't come out. DD will be over the moon, but I'm not!

GloriaSmud · 10/12/2017 06:31

We have snow (Leicester) Big flakes ~ think it's been going about an hour and amazed how quickly it's settling ~ there's 1cm or so already!

GFS got it about right when it started forecasting this one, just over a week ago.

TheDonald · 10/12/2017 06:41

Boo! No snow here yet. I thought we'd get some overnight. Sad

I'm at the top end of Derbyshire and we were in the amber alert area but they've moved it south.

Might have to drive up onto some high ground to test our new sledge!

Tiddlywinks63 · 10/12/2017 06:45

It's snowing here in north Wiltshire (south of M4), pretty windy too. About a centimetre deep here at the mo.

Frouby · 10/12/2017 06:46

No snow here thank fuck! It's changed from heavy snow from 6am to a couple of hours of light snow from 11am. We are in south yorks.

Ds will be able to have his party bless him.

hoochymama1 · 10/12/2017 06:48

I feel your pain Thedonald. Still a bit of snow from the other day, but it's moved south. Hey ho bet there will be snow on Mam Tor Xmas Grin

WhispersOfWickedness · 10/12/2017 07:12

Met office app still teasing us with snow, currently forecasting light snow and sleet 😠 I'm in north Lincolnshire.

millimat · 10/12/2017 07:25

No snow in north cheshire this morning

WitchesHatRim · 10/12/2017 07:27

Now a good couple of inches here and coming down fast.

We live in a quiet road and now car tracks at all.

DH seems to have caught DS cold and has no voice so it's a watching Christmas films on the sofa day I think.

randomsabreuse · 10/12/2017 07:28

Good couple of inches in Shropshire on top of 8 inches from Friday... going to be interesting!

Unescorted · 10/12/2017 07:31

Thedonald & hooch.
Twenty trees has just enough and it doesn't appear to have melted much but very little fell over night. Hoping the band moves north in the next hour or so to improve the chances of boards and skis.

JillJ72 · 10/12/2017 07:36

N Bucks. Woke at 0400h to a light dusting and it's not stopped so layers are building. It's not really deep but it's respectable for us!

ScribblyGum · 10/12/2017 07:37

Pitiful offering in Chester at the moment. Bloody typical.

velocitygir1 · 10/12/2017 07:39

Wolverhampton...a fair bit of snow over the last few days, snowing here since 4am and continuous still.
Small flakes but lots of them.

About 2-3 inches deep now. Sticking.

ScribblyGum · 10/12/2017 07:40

Placing bets with myself for how long the freshly created dog turd in the garden is covered given time to cool and current snow fall density. Current estimation is 10am.

Kwackerly · 10/12/2017 07:42

Usual rain here in London. DH is going to gloat, he said it wouldn't be cold enough.

I want snooow

TheDonald · 10/12/2017 07:42

Unescorted is that where they have the sheepdog trials? That sounds promising.

Might have to go to Rosies for lunch too!

NamelessEnsign · 10/12/2017 07:45

Plenty here in West Oxfordshire!

I’m worrying about colleagues flying in from Asia & the US today but I can’t help as i’m home alone with the kids. They are all flying in from places which already have snow but I don’t think they appreciate how rubbish we are at dealing with snow in the UK 😖.

I’m hoping the roads are clear enough for travel tomorrow (and the schools open) otherwise there’s going to be a very stressed Ensign tomorrow Grin. For today though - two kids who have hardly ever seen snow before! [santa]

Fffion · 10/12/2017 07:46

Snowing in NW Surrey.

Unescorted · 10/12/2017 07:47

Near. Go past Rosie's and take the snake path on the left. It will be a bit of a motorway with walkers. Take care the path was icy even before the sun dipped last night.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 10/12/2017 07:48

Big covering here in Warwickshire. We were going to the Christmas market but looks like we will stay in.

Rugby on later and Christmas films Elf later.

NoStraightEdges · 10/12/2017 07:49

Serious snow in Birmingham, and still coming down thick and fast

AbiBranning · 10/12/2017 07:50

We have snow!Grin
