I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

How about Sheffield? Will I get stuck if I tried to go tomorrow?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/12/2017 20:20

lol!!!!

Sadly, I think if we are getting model disagreement at this stage any specific forecasts I attempt are going to be a bit hopeless. It does seem as though the low is tracking further south than forecast and so I think that Oxford is now very much in the firing line. I think this is going to be predominantly a south midlands affair, but I wouldn’t rule out snow further south into the home counties.

I think Sheffield will see some snow later tomorrow.

Thanks Kitten hopefully we can get there and back even if we freeze out goolies off! Grin

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 09/12/2017 20:38

It's below freezing in the Highlands tonight all that snow is going to freeze hard tonight.
None of the weather forecasts can seem to agree on what it is going to do up here over the next few days it is changing by the minute at the moment. I wouldn't mind more snow really the dc have had a great day sledging although the snow has been pretty powdery so it took a bit of work to get a good slippy route for the sledges to go down.

Nyx1 · 09/12/2017 20:48

changing by the minute is right!! it's actually warming up a bit here, which makes sense because we were told, by the BBC site, about 7c and rain tomorrow - since this morning that has changed to 2c and "heavy snow"!!!

meanwhile accuweather still plumping for 4c and rain which I think it said this morning.... I am not normally obsessively checking but I just want to be sure we don't get stuck out in any snow, when the Tubes (our bit is overground) and buses get pulled it's a nightmare.

I also can't walk on icy pavements. I feel like there is a trick I am missing....so going to the station could be a mare on Monday.

TooLazyForDrama · 09/12/2017 20:51

Hmm. Would it be stupid to drive from Birmingham to Northampton tomorrow at about 11am?

WhispersOfWickedness · 09/12/2017 20:58

Grr, we're still under a yellow weather warning, but just looking like light snow for a couple of hours now ☹️ I'm hoping that it'll get a second wind when it gets to us as we're up a hill 😬

BrizzleDrizzle · 09/12/2017 21:01

TOoLazy wait and see what it's like in the morning? I don't think it's going to be the best of ideas but who knows what the morning will bring.

MooseyMoo · 09/12/2017 21:04

nyx I bought some ice grippers for my shoes and hasn't snowed since If you google ice grippers they are lots of different brands/prices

Nyx1 · 09/12/2017 21:07

Moosey - yes, I have them. They're pretty poor for commuting because as soon as you encounter any other kind of flooring, they can make things more slippery.

plus I have to put them on outside the building because the entrance to the common door has a kind of shiny flooring and I'd just go flying across it. just ended up being easier to get thick soled boots with a good tread or whatever you call it, but even then, I've broken bones slipping on ice so I'm quite nervous of it now and a 10 minute walk takes about 25.

Delatron · 09/12/2017 21:13

Our forecast down here in S.Bucks has just changed from rain tomorrow with a bit of sleet to heavy snow for most of the day (BBC).I'll believe it when I see it!! Must be a nightmare to forecast this. Seems to change by the hour.

SparklingSnowfall · 09/12/2017 21:13

Argh it's starting to look less promising here now (North Cheshire) Sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/12/2017 21:17

TooLazy at least you’d probably see some snow that way.

I’ll be completely honest. There will be snow, heavy at times, somewhere in the middle. That’s about as accurate as I feel I can be Xmas Confused

How many people are parents and teachers hoping for a snow day on Monday?! I expect there are quite a few including me

millimat · 09/12/2017 21:27

We're north Cheshire too and now it's forecast light snow rather than heavy. DD had a big event on in Warrington tomorrow but it's been cancelled because of the forecast.

millimat · 09/12/2017 21:27

(And as a teacher I'll be expected in whatever the weather Sad)

SparklingSnowfall · 09/12/2017 21:27

I suppose all we can do is wait for the morning!

ItsNachoCheese · 09/12/2017 21:31

My parents are near girvan just now and have had some snow. Stirling way hasnt had any yet

Theimpossiblegirl · 09/12/2017 21:32

Slightly off topic but millimat , check your union guidance- you are not expected to put your personal safety at risk to travel to work.

BrizzleDrizzle · 09/12/2017 21:34

(And as a teacher I'll be expected in whatever the weather sad)

Even if the school is closed to pupils? Back when I was still working in schools the rule was that if the school is closed to pupils then it is closed to staff.

whojamaflip · 09/12/2017 21:36

Glos / oxon border here and the 3 forecasts I use (we're farmers Smile) are all saying completely different things!!! 100% chance to no chance Hmm

Kids are beyond excited, I'm worrying about the sheep which are still on our rented grazing land 8 miles from home and dh is saying we will deal with whatever we get.

Any ideas OYBBK or Gloria?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/12/2017 21:47

whojam, I think you will get some snow, but it may start off as sleet before turning to snow later.

Thank you!

sluj · 09/12/2017 21:53

Our forecast in Hertfordshire seems to be all over the place ranging from sleet to heavy snow for several hours. Any one care to take a guess for me?
I'm hoping for the snow ⛷⛷⛷
