I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

We've now lost the heavy snow forecast for tomorrow. OYBBK, what are your thoughts for Manchester tomorrow and Monday. We seem to be right on the edge of the really bad weather so not sure if we will get it or not.

Nyx1 · 09/12/2017 14:05

this thread is making me wonder why I ever look at 5 day forecasts Grin

bookbook · 09/12/2017 14:16

we are now forecast sleet rather than snow now for tomorrow

BishopBrennansArse · 09/12/2017 14:19

Isn't likely I know but I like the look of this

Nyx, there is a strong case to be made for your stance. Grin

Arti, I still think Manchester is in the firing line.

We've had a fairly decent day here, we even managed a 'high' of 3.1C, 40 minutes ago! Temperature's dropping quickly now though and it's gone down 1C in the last 1/2 hour.

notsomanky · 09/12/2017 15:26

Manchester town centre was very wet - heavy sleet!

Got the train home and there was about 1cm on the ground here but no snow falling since this morning.

It's just starting to sleet here now.

notsomanky · 09/12/2017 15:50

Forecast has now shifted for us - only very light occasional snow showers expected overnight and tomorrow morning - what a disappointment!

Ollivander84 · 09/12/2017 15:56

Fair bit here! Part of Lancashire with its own weather system Grin
It can be a foot deep here and yet nothing a couple of miles down the road

Band of rain (soon to become snow for some!) is showing up nicely here.
We're now down to 1C

SquirrelPlantedBeech · 09/12/2017 16:51

I’m so confused by the forecast here tomorrow. We’re under an amber warning but looking at BBC weather it seems we’ll just be in for some light snow. East Cheshire a couple of miles west of Macclesfield.
Can either Gloria or YBBK take a look please?

GloriaSmud · 09/12/2017 16:59

Squirrel ~ I think you're just on the edge of the Amber warning zone so you might get the occasional heavy burst of snow but (unless the rain band changes position) the rest of the time, it'll be fairly light.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 09/12/2017 17:29

Update - did a long journey today. Liverpool is basically just wet. The motorway is also wet. Lancashire is sort of slushy. Cumbria is wet, and a bit slushy.

drinkswineoutofamug · 09/12/2017 17:34

👋🏻 at squirrel. I'm near you . I'm still expecting big snow in Macclesfield as we have our own eco system here! On the edge of the Pennines. Travelled towards Manchester today and once we left macc, nothing. Just wet .

ConfusedDotty · 09/12/2017 17:44

My severe weather warning has gone. It’s freezing here in the NE, clear skies so I think no chance of snow.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/12/2017 18:00

Goodness, the latest met office tweet really shows the Manchester snow shield in action tomorrow: twitter.com/metoffice/status/939514163700944896

3 weather apps
One says snow, 2 day no snow...
Which will be right?...

dementedma · 09/12/2017 18:04

bitterly cold here in Central Scotland but no sign of snow as yet

educatingarti · 09/12/2017 18:08

Nooooo Manchester snow shield Sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/12/2017 18:11

I do find it quite astonishing at how wet, yet not snowy Manchester can be. It’s down to the topography, but it must seem mightily unfair for you there. I hope you get some,

No snow here, obviously Smile as we're in the South West. But the weather on Thursday is ringing alarm bells (on the radio) already.

It's been very cold here today but feels like it's warmed up a tiny bit this evening.

InMySpareTime · 09/12/2017 18:25

Boo to the Manchester snow shield. It's 0 degrees and somehow still managing to drizzle instead of snow Xmas Sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/12/2017 18:27

The arpege model is very keen on snow for the south tomorrow.

Apart from a few snow flurries yesterday morning and a heavy frost (-4) this morning, it's been a comparatively mild day today here in north Wiltshire and it's still above freezing outside now.
I'm not convinced we'll see any snow overnight thank goodness because I hate snow and ice

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 09/12/2017 18:55

Ooooo would it get as far as East Kent Kitten?

Desperate to see what pokemon you get when it snows. They've just updated pokemon go so they change according to the weather, so cool.
