I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

Nothing here in East Manchester. Our forecast now says sleet and light snow showers today and only light showers tomorrow. Gutted!

InMySpareTime · 09/12/2017 08:26

A light dusting of snow in Trafford, which is more than we usually get!
The Manchester Snow Shield has been breached 😄☃❄️

educatingarti · 09/12/2017 08:29

Manky - just the other side of Manchester and we still have a heavy snow and amber weather warning. Guess the dividing line must be very close and of course may not be accurate.

educatingarti · 09/12/2017 08:42

Snowing here right now!

GloriaSmud · 09/12/2017 08:43

Thoughts from TheWeatherOutlook on tomorrow's snow.

notsomanky · 09/12/2017 08:45

Posted too soon. Snow!!!

It's sticking too. Coming down steadily.

Off to the Christmas markets with DD - if the wheels of public transport dont grind to a halt!

GloriaSmud · 09/12/2017 08:46

Snow showers showing up here (probably including where you are, educatingarti)

MrsOH2004 · 09/12/2017 08:47

North Northants and yesterday our warning turned to sleet, now it's back to heavy snow from 6am to 1pm, I need to go and get some wellies as I could be walking to work tomorrow for 4pm.

GloriaSmud · 09/12/2017 08:47

Yay, notsomanky!

notsomanky · 09/12/2017 08:48

GloriaSmud · 09/12/2017 08:52

Oh Xmas Sad

Fishfingersandwichnocheese · 09/12/2017 09:02

Seen the forecast for Sunday Shock

I love snow but I’m supposed to drive from derby to Worcester Sunday evening !

notsomanky · 09/12/2017 09:03

Started again so woolly hats are called for at the markets. DD is singing Christmas songs.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/12/2017 09:05

Not huge amounts around today, some for the NW probably.

Tomorrow I think the main risk areas are in a swathe (away from the coasts) in a band between Northampton and Hull-ish (best marker points I can find) There could still be a real problem.
The whole system seems slightly further south than it did yesterday.
In southern England, still lots of rain and very strong winds.

Monday still has a massive question mark for me.

UKMO has changed my rain to sleet for Mondayand I'm near Gatwick, @OhYouBadBadKitten

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/12/2017 09:11

I don’t think we can go from model to model for exact location of sleet or snow on Monday Brennan. It’s so marginal and will depend on all sorts of things including precipitation intensity.

Tomorrow actually, I think the snow will be a problem for as far south as Oxford.

Just walked to the train station.

Over 1cm of snow lying already and DD and I look like

SquirrelPlantedBeech · 09/12/2017 10:31

South Cheshire/Staffs border.
Approx 2 inches here, it all came down 6am onwards. Has stopped now.
Tomorrow the forecast actually looks better for this area than it did when I checked last night.

GloriaSmud · 09/12/2017 10:42

We have SNOOOOOOW (Leicester)
Biggish flakes as well!

TheWoollybacksWife · 09/12/2017 10:47

You must be near me MrsOH. I'm looking at walking tomorrow too.

SquirrelPlantedBeech · 09/12/2017 11:04

I need to drive home, it's about 25 miles north from where I am now. I was going to wait until later this afternoon but it's started snowing again and it's coming down quite heavily again. I've spoken to OH and he said the motorway is fine (m6) but side roads are bad. I'm going to set off now.
Will update later!

drinkswineoutofamug · 09/12/2017 11:17

I'm in east cheshire 👋🏻
We have a blanket of snow , I'm at the foot of the Pennines. It's still coming down fairly heavy. Has been on and off since this morning. We too have the amber warning for tomorrow. I believe the cat and fiddle is closed. I presume the snake pass will be too. Bloody freezing too. -2 when I got up this morning

Nyx1 · 09/12/2017 12:27

my outer North London burb did not say snow for today

but now accuweather says snow in the next 90 minutes....?!

SquirrelPlantedBeech · 09/12/2017 12:43

I'm home. I'm very close to you mug !
The drive was ok, snow here seems to be thawing a bit but there's enough left on the ground to make pavements treacherous when it freezes tonight.
Checked forecast for tomorrow and again it seems much improved over what they were forecasting yesterday.
