I wish you could have joint thread starters! Gloria and I will be hosting this years snow watch and tag teaming with amateur weather forecasts. When reading them, please bear in mind that we are both amateurs with busy day to day lives, but we will do our best.

Please remember snow is notoriously difficult to forecast in this country as it often falls under marginal conditions.
When a forecast matters please do check with the Met Office first.

After a taste of winter already for some in the east, this mornings GFS model sticks with the winter weather theme we’ve been noticing for a few days for late Thurs 7th onwards, with a significant low pressure looking to bring in some cold and potentially rather snowy weather. Indeed, there is the potential for this to be accompanied by some very strong winds.

At the moment GFS plays around with the exact location of this low pressure, so it is too early to say where any snow may hit, but most places away from the far west seem to be in the potential firing line at the moment.

If some of the charts come off, the weather could be quite disruptive next weekend.

never had one of them txt before

Nyx1 · 08/12/2017 16:28

Kitten I was thinking that about Monday but not sure why.....I don't look at the forecast models, it's all just a mystery to me!

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 08/12/2017 16:40

I want snow!!!!

I'm in east Kent, any chance the heavy rain forecast for Monday could fall as snow?

If you do have snow then enjoy and stay safe and warm.

Abijam · 08/12/2017 16:44

I am with Alexindisguise. I like the snow but I can't stand the freezing cold. I'd prefer summer over winter.

BrizzleDrizzle · 08/12/2017 16:54

No snow here :-( Just the usual, persistent rain with added icy coldness today.

hoochymama1 · 08/12/2017 16:55

Oh, I must admit it's been a bit of a nightmare here today in North Derbyshire, my road is slopey and it's been hard for cars going up and down. Main roads are ok. Been pretty with the snow. But the cold means if you get any it will stick Xmas Grin Already plotting to work from home on Monday. Hope you get some if you want some Xmas Wink

Maudlinmaud · 08/12/2017 17:10

It's looking like we may be snowed in. Our pizza place said they can't deliver tonight and dh can't get the car out of our slopey drive ffs, he parked behind my car so I'm blocked in too. It has frozen over the snow and it's like a bottle. Still coming down.
I would gladly give people who haven't any all of ours. I want pizza Xmas Confused

We are on an amber warning for Sunday here in the west of Manchester. That hardly ever happens. I think I am excited!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 08/12/2017 17:36

No snow low down here in Cumbria. It's very cold but the sky is just a bit cloudy. We've actually had quite a sunny day.

BlackeyedSusan · 08/12/2017 17:49

just trying to work out what a snowflake and a grey circle meant on the weather forecast.

it actually means I need to clean the monitor screen.. [oops]

GloriaSmud · 08/12/2017 18:02

Oh dear, Blackeyed. Actually we've got a few mucky splotches on our monitor too.

I'm beginning to think that if there are any warnings to come out about Monday's weather, the metoffice might do them tomorrow when they're a bit more certain of the details.

Frouby · 08/12/2017 18:54

As long as we can get from sheffield/barnsley to Manchester Wednesday I am not fussed.

Poor ds (almost 4) has his birthday party booked for a local soft play centre on Sunday. I spoke to them today and they are keeping an eye on the forecast. Am hoping they will let me rebook tomorrow for a different date so I can let people know in plenty of time.

The ignorant school mums that didn't rsvp will have to either guess or turn up amd get turned away. It's literally at the bottom of our road so if it is open I can take him down for an hour anyway.

teta · 08/12/2017 19:57

Lots of snow and accidents in Shropshire today. Saw a car that had gone off the road, through a hedge and into a field upside down. And lots of terrified lorry drivers on the A49. A delivery man phoned me up to ask whether he could leave my parcel in the grit box at the bottom of our hill as he couldn’t get up it!
Dh tried to pick up Ds but skidded coming out of our driveway and nearly ended up in next doors kitchen.... so Ds is boarding tonight.
And Sunday is meant to be worse.....

gttia · 08/12/2017 20:11

Uk snow on Twitter are reporting 6-7 inches on Monday in London??
Is this true?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/12/2017 20:35

I don’t think so gttia, it’s more likely to be heavy rain. I’m not entirely scoffing though.

teta, that sounds awful, I hope the council get to grips with it quickly.

Just to say thank you for this really useful & informative thread, we're in the 'Amber zone' for Sunday,
I'm excited!

bookbook · 08/12/2017 21:42

ooh, we have been upgraded to amber warning for snow here in the East Riding. Our snow normally comes January/February time

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 08/12/2017 22:54

Our snow for Sunday has turned to rain. Still well within the amber warning though so who knows Hmm. The dc are happy we had some heavy showers today even if it didn't settle.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/12/2017 23:11

I would ignore symbols on the map, they are computer generated and are not always accurate.

Well I've got a lunch in Manchester on Sunday and I've paid the deposit.

I'm going. Probably in my wellies with grips on but I'm going.

bakingcupcakes · 09/12/2017 07:07

We have a dusting of snow (north west england). DS wants to go to Grandad's house to use his sledge 'right now'. There's not enough for that!

I'm nervous as we have stuff planned this morning and tomorrow morning but I don't know if we'll make either. I hope they let you rebook your DS's birthday party Frouby. At least he'll get snow to play in!

GloriaSmud · 09/12/2017 07:43

-1.8C here (Leicester) and white everywhere due to frost.
Metoffice are giving us heavy snow from 4am right through 'til 3pm tomorrow Xmas Shock

(Can I just remind folks to feed the birds/wildlife in this cold weather. I think we've still got a couple of baby hedgehogs wandering about as well that I'm trying to fatten up with (meat) cat food.)
