Heatwave in London

Wonder if any knowledgeable folk are about
Is the heatwave in London really not breaking till the weekend?
Before anyone tells me off, the office is boiling, Tube is boiling, flat is boiling. I think there's been 17 days this year already where the flat has been 28 at night. It feels a bit much. I was just really hoping thy might be wrong about it being all week. This big block of flats kind of accumulates heat as well.

Last year we had a frost in May, it does feel unusual this year and the effect on my asthma is not helping.

My dad set out for his usual walk with the dog but had a funny turn due to the heat, doesn't normally affect him at all.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 18/06/2017 16:51

Oh & my weather app tells me that my back garden is currently 3 degrees hotter than the Greek resort we are going to in a couple of weeks!

AndHoldTheBun · 18/06/2017 16:55

Pgoat, yes, the unit we bought is freestanding and on wheels, it has a pipe/vent the size of a tumble drier vent pipe which you put out a window . It came with a panel to fit to the window with a hole for the pipe- would be easy to make one with cardboard tho.

It is noisy but if you get the temp and humidity down low, you can switch it off overnight

MadisonAvenue · 18/06/2017 16:56

I'm in the Midlands and it's uncomfortable today. I walked the dog at 6am to avoid the worst of it but it was still humid then.
I dread to think what London's like at the moment. I've been many times during heatwaves and I don't envy any of you who need to use the tube, it's unbearable.

My son decided late last night that he fancied a day out today so booked train tickets to London. I told him that he must be insane.

Slimthistime · 18/06/2017 17:13

Dame, hope be feels better
Santa, yes, I agree.

I'm pretty sure a portable air con unit would be useless here as I can only run it out the balcony door - how to seal? - or a window that doesn't open wide enough for a vent.

I have respiratory problems (as well as poor lurcher dog who is blessed with a thick coat) so here in rural Herefordshire on a hill it is still 30 degrees in the shade and we are both suffering (I hosed both of us down at one point !)
I do feel sorry for the city dwellers as it must be unbearable and you can't sit and cool off in front of a fan!
You have my sympathies.

youngestisapsycho · 18/06/2017 17:26

I live in London but have spent the whole of today on the riverside in Reading watching a rowing regatta. It is bloody unbearable. I have been under shade all day, there is no breeze at all. I am dripping sweat and soooo hot. I've nearly killed DH!

Highalert · 18/06/2017 17:42

I'm sure city dwellers can use a fan.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/06/2017 17:48

highalert - heat getting to you? you seem awfully argumentative!

High temp here in my properly screened weather station 31.5c.

Bleurgh, it's horrible, isn't it. Do you have any flexibility with your hours? I'm going to get go in early so I can avoid the tube in rush hour and then leave before 4. Appreciate I'm lucky to be able to do that, though.

It's 29.5 in my house right now, and that's with all windows open, blinds down and wet muslins draped across the windows to try to cool us

sparechange · 18/06/2017 18:01

Put a plate of ice cubes in front of the fan and angle it downwards.
It was blow cool air (but obviously only until the ice melts!)

The new carriages on the overground, district line, circle line and met line have got air con - can you alter your commute a bit to use one of those lines?
Or walk/Boris bike a bit earlier before it gets too hot? And do the same to get home and then have a cool shower?

Highalert · 18/06/2017 18:30

No I'm just puzzled as to why someone in London couldn't use a fan Grin

welshweasel · 18/06/2017 18:31

We have a really old portable ac unit in DS's room. We run the hose out the balcony door with no seal. It's not ideal but it gets the temperature down from 29 to 23ish which is far more bearable. For the few times a year it's needed I can't be bothered to sort a proper seal.

sparechange · 18/06/2017 18:37

high
Op said it is just moving hot air around and therefore doesn't have much effect

Whatthefoxgoingon · 18/06/2017 18:51

I was laughed at when we renovated our house years ago and I insisted on getting air con built in. Who's laughing now DH???

Am holed up in my cool house. I find heat unbearable, kids and I cannot sleep at all if it's too hot. It was a nightmare when they were very little and we had no air con. Get a portable a/c unit if you can possibly afford it, London is getting hotter by the year!

Slimthistime · 18/06/2017 19:12

High
You seem to think fans can work miracles. Yes I'm using them, still boiling in these blocks.

Re journey, too far to alter for those lines and bus from here c1.5 hours on a good day. I'm better off out of the pollution in terms of walking anyway, it just sets my asthma off. My inhaler use is higher in winter than summer, I presume that's connected to pollution.

I think the poster who said we last had a summer like this in 2006 is right, so I'll just cross my fingers and hope it doesn't turn out like that one. Have sheets hanging over glass from outside.

Thanks for the understanding. I'm looking forward to my work at home days for sure!

Office temp will probably be about 37 I reckon.

OP posts:
SleightOfHand · 18/06/2017 19:25

I think they need to introduce a maximum as well as a minimum temperature in work places.

InvisibleKittenAttack · 18/06/2017 19:28

Heat in London is different - there's more air pollution which traps it and the higher density of high rise buildings makes it worse. In many parts of the city it feels like there's no air.

The tube is what is evil - used to regularly be over 40 degrees on the Northern Line when I commuted it.

(I believe the problem with air con on the tube trains is the units have to go on top of the trains, but the tunnels aren't big enough to accommodate them, raising the height of the tunnels would be a massive undertaking costing a fortune - to solve a problem that for many years is only an issue for 2 weeks a year.)

Op you have my sympathies - taxi would be worth it.

HappyAxolotl · 18/06/2017 19:46

I certainly don't miss my old workplace where I would be on reception in a suit while the office floors had air con and the staff there would come in dressed for the beach and whine about being cold, meaning the air con got turned off and I'd be roasting. I couldn't even go to get water without having to call for cover.

Thank goodness now I can wear sensible summer office clothing like smart shift dresses. I think that probably creates a far better first impression than a nearly-purple face, limp damp hair and free-flowing sweat.

GloriaSmud · 18/06/2017 22:31

Metoffice have issued a Level 3 Heat Health Watch for the next few days.
It's forecast to hit 30C here tomorrow (Leicester)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/06/2017 22:37

31.5c here today. I quite like it, it turns dd into a grumpy melty thing. But I'm not in London and have lots of green around.

GloriaSmud · 19/06/2017 10:38

We haven't hit 'grumpy and melty' with DDs yet but looking at the temperatures for today and this week, it could only be a matter of time!
Heard on the radio this morning that today could be the hottest June day for 40 years ~ it was already 25C at 9am. DD2's got a 2 hour exam this afternoon. I have packed off with many bottles of water.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/06/2017 13:29

Your poor dd Gloria!

Reached 31c here. The sky is much clearer than yesterday, so I suspect we will (un)comfortably top yesterday's high temp.
