The UK won’t get totality but depending on where you are, 80-90% of the sun should be covered. More info here.
Let’s hope for clear skies!

See it, not saw it! Thinking of the aurora that I missed due to cloud last night.

GloriaSmud · 18/03/2015 07:56

OYBBK ~ I don't think there was a lot to see but some lucky folks got to see some lights.

My glasses arrived the other day. Just waiting for school to let me know if they are doing anything. Don't want DC to miss it, but they are the sort that are mortified to be late in...

Perihelion · 18/03/2015 15:52

Aurorawatch is saying there's still possibility of aurora tonight too. Too cloudy for us last night.

Am Grin at aurora last night, as only yesterday afternoon I was talking to DD's teacher about her taking time off to see the eclipse. Explaining that yes we had the correct glasses and that DH and I were quite keen on the sky, astronomy and space weather and aurora hunting........
Can see a bit of driving required to find clear skies though.

stubbornstains · 18/03/2015 15:59

My mate said it was visible on the Lizard (most southerly point) apparently! However, I do have my suspicions, as can't find anything on the Interweb to back this up....

FromMeToYou · 18/03/2015 16:20

Apparently my childs school is closing the blinds! Is that what all schools are doing?

pigsinmud · 18/03/2015 17:15

Dd1 has been told they can go outside if they have the right equipment. I bought some solar eclipse glasses the other week. We just tried them out by looking at the sun - very cool!

I can see for schools that it could be a nightmare. I'm going to double check to see if they are allowed to watch it. None of my dc have missed time for holidays, days out etc.., but I'm going to send them in late if they are not allowed out. We only live a 1 minute walk away from school so would send them in for 10ish.

pigsinmud · 18/03/2015 17:16

Although looking at the forecast they'll be in school on time!

Perihelion · 18/03/2015 23:03

The Daily Record are giving away free eclipse glasses with Thursday's edition, bought from Morrisons.

BBC Scotland forecast for Friday morning a bit pish, but possible breaks in the cloud in Fife.........

Clear skies here the now, but nae fucking aurora Sad

stubbornstains · 19/03/2015 11:27

Totally clear skies forecast for Cornwall tomorrow at 9! (does happy dance).

Chris Evans just told the nation you could safely use welders' masks to look at the sun....wonder if he was forced to retract that later, or if he was going on Official Advice?

GloriaSmud · 19/03/2015 11:44

Clear sunny skies forecast for us here (Leicester) as well

MInd you, last time I wanted to see an eclipse I went all the way to Romania is 1999 (as well as the excuse for a holiday, I reckoned that there would be a much better chance of clear skies). It was lovely and clear- right up until the morning of the eclipse, when the skies clouded over dramatically and a mahoosive thunderstorm rocked up from nowhere!

pigsinmud · 19/03/2015 13:27

Cloud, cloud and cloud for us in Surrey. Dd2 (8) had a meltdown when I said that the weather didn't look great for tomorrow and that I didn't think we'd even see the sun!

Oh stubborn how disappointing. I was lucky in 1999 and the weather was clear.

stubbornstains · 19/03/2015 13:34

Where were you schilke?

GloriaSmud · 19/03/2015 16:33

Perhaps those that don't see the eclipse will be able to see the other celestial event that happens tomorrow ~ a Supermoon makes an appearance.

46% cloud cover forecast here, but partly sunny. Does that mean we will or won't be able to see anything? I'm a bit confused

stubbornstains · 19/03/2015 19:48

It means it's in the hands of the gods molten. I'd sacrifice a small domestic animal or something if I were you.....

MoltenBrownChocolate · 19/03/2015 19:56

Grin stubborn! That'll be next doors' cat then or the dc's hamster

stubbornstains · 19/03/2015 20:05

Looks cloudy here in Leeds but I'm hoping the sun will break through briefly. Tested my eclipse viewer on bright afternoon sun today and it seems great. Will take a colander to work as well. I'm going to have to keep popping out of the office to see what's happening, and definitely for the 10 mins around maximum. Funny how some people just aren't bothered.

BlackeyedSusan · 19/03/2015 22:29

what time is the maximum?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/03/2015 22:39

9:31 in the south.

A lot of cloud around, looks like the SW and perhaps Lincolnshire have the best chance of seeing it.

BlackeyedSusan · 19/03/2015 23:07

thanks. does it get later the further north/east one travels... I am too tired to remember my own name let alone work it all out.

ladybird69 · 19/03/2015 23:54

Thanks kitten

Cooroo · 20/03/2015 06:18

9.33 in Leeds. If you google 'eclipse' and nearest city there's a good site that will tell you all you need to know about every eclipse ever!
