met office warnings are clearly in the process of being updated as all the warnings of wind have vanished. Hurry up met office, I'm off out in a bit!

yellow warnings for snow in Scotland are up now. The wind warnings are still missing.

half updated warnings with just yellows for scotland and no wind yet for the south. That will change!! I expect some of the scottish yellows will turn to amber tomorrow and there is no way on earth that tomorrows weather doesnt warrant warnings in the south.

I'm off out now, so someone else will need to update when the warnings are fully updated. I can check in on my phone.

Netweather have got the whole country under a Red Alert while metmonkey say this.

First Capital Connect already have a warning for disruption. I think I caught on the ClassicFM news earlier that if people can travel today, to do so.

HesterShaw · 22/12/2013 14:18

Red! Fuck!

HesterShaw · 22/12/2013 14:19

(sorry about the expletive. Is it ok to say fuck in Weather?)

TheGreatHunt · 22/12/2013 14:32

The met office have amber and yellow warnings for wind only across the south. That doesn't make sense -
Guessing one should actually be wind?

GloriaSmud · 22/12/2013 14:34

I think on this occasion, you might get away with it Hester!
Some posters on some message boards I'm reading (who seem pretty knowledgeable about all things weather), are wondering why the metoffice haven't gone for some Red warnings in some areas as well. I guess have to see what happens as we get nearer to tomorrow.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 22/12/2013 14:41

can I have a description please of the warnings. am out in the middle of the countryside (freezing) with a dodgy signal

GloriaSmud · 22/12/2013 14:45

That might take some time, OYMLK!

HesterShaw · 22/12/2013 14:46

"Very wet and very windy in lots of places".

Howzzat?

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 22/12/2013 14:47

I am confused by all I have heard on the news and what dh is telling me.

I want to know what is going to happen for the SE. DCs are desperate for snow.

denialandpanic · 22/12/2013 14:48

oymlk they have Amber in place for rain in south.nothing for wind but the actual text references up to 80mph gusts.I think it's a cock up. I follow Liam Dutton c4 weather on Twitter and he has posted highlighting that people shouldn't forget the wind etc.

HesterShaw · 22/12/2013 14:50

Toffee it doesn't look like snow. It looks pretty cold on Boxing Day though.

GloriaSmud · 22/12/2013 14:57

Today ~ whole of Scotland has a yellow warning for ice.
Tomorrow ~ whole of Scotland YW (yellow warning) for ice, middle of Scotland YW for snow, southern Scotland (tiny area ~ YW heavy rain)
The South ~ in a line from Mid Wales to north of Kent downwards ~ YW for rain. Amber warning covers south Wales/South West/South coast along to Kent for heavy rain.

Tuesday ~ YW for wind for whole of Scotland and Northern Ireland. Same warnings for tomorrow apply to South.

TheGreatHunt · 22/12/2013 14:59

met office says (monday 7am - tues 9am)

A deep area of low pressure will sweep an active frontal system across England and Wales on Monday. This will bring 20-40 mm rainfall quite widely, with over 60 mm likely across parts of the high ground of southern England and South Wales. Falling onto saturated ground, this will bring the risk of both surface water and river flooding.

Meanwhile, south to southwesterly winds will increase with gusts 70-80 mph likely around exposed coasts, particularly along the English Channel. Further inland, gusts of 50-60 mph are likely through the amber area, with a lower risk of gusts reaching 70 mph - more especially across southeast England during the evening

TheGreatHunt · 22/12/2013 14:59

and for ice

Showers will continue to affect the west of Scotland overnight Sunday and into Monday. Road temperatures will fall below freezing where skies clear between showers. This will allow icy stretches to form. Further east there is still the risk of risk of icy stretches on roads which have been wet by today's showers. On the higher routes in the west, above 200 metres, snow accumulations of 1-2cm are expected by Monday morning.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 22/12/2013 15:08

Thanks Hester and GloriaSmud.

nannynick · 22/12/2013 15:18

Just arrived at my mums and it has started snowing. Got here just in time, snow may last a while or it may be gone by morning. Aberdeenshire.

TheGhostOfPortoPast · 22/12/2013 15:18

It sounds quite scary!

GloriaSmud · 22/12/2013 15:20

There's a statement from the Highways Agency about traveling in the next few days along with live travel information here.

denialandpanic · 22/12/2013 15:35

virgin trains are accepting travel today for tomorrow's tickets.probably a bit late now most people won't see it?

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 22/12/2013 15:48

I'm back :) going to take me a while to sort myself out though.

denialandpanic · 22/12/2013 15:58

apparently met office are about to reupdate according to c4

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 22/12/2013 16:11

Interesting that gfs is now splitting the centre of the low into two centres. Not sure if its cos its struggling to resolve the data (and hence an artefact) or whether its really what will happen. It still looks jolly horrible.

I have no idea what is going on with the met office warnings. There should be ambers for wind in the south too. i know that the flooding is a real concern but people will think they dont need to worry about the wind.
