youarewinning · 23/12/2013 05:31

So much for the biggest freeze in decades!

digerd · 23/12/2013 07:37

S.Herts.
Temperature sank to 2 degrees at 4am but now is 6.6. Trees not moving.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 23/12/2013 07:55

I am worried as I can't understand what will happen for us. One year DH couldn't get home as the hill as closed, another year it took him 8 hours instead of 1 1/4 hours to get home. One year we were snowed in for 4 days. We are due at PIL for Christmas afternoon and I do not want to get stuck at their house, plus if we did our cats would be home alone Sad.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 08:41

Morning all, quick forecast now, more later when I'm out of bed!

So the storm seems to be perhaps a little slower in terms of main impact in Scotland tomorrow. Unfortunately the result is a storm that will perhaps linger into Christmas Day. However it is right on track today :( pressures are dropping rapidly as the low pressure bombs (and meets the criteria for that twice over).

Flooding might not be quite so bad, but I don't think it means we can relax about that. Wind I think might be an issue even in non warned areas so take it easy where ever you are.

I will eat my snotty tissue if the met office don't issue an amber for the SE for late tonight when it still looks likely that some of it will see gusts of 70-80mph. Other than that, there is still the snow for Scotland to contend with, but also I think perhaps welsh hills and the Pennines.

There's a BBC news report and live updates here on the weather/travel disruption.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 08:45

Youarewinning - that was the express :) silly old sods aren't they.

OP posts:
OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 08:48

That's rather handy Gloria, thanks :)

I was thinking the SE might get an amber warning for tonight. I also wondered about the possibility of an amber warning for the NW/west coast of Scotland/England down to mid Wales for tomorrow for wind as well.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 08:49

Toffee hopefully my update has helped?

OP posts:
OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 08:51

I think those areas will end up with amber too Gloria, not sure how far south it will extend.

Ooo I might have got that right?!

The Guardian have also got live updates on their website. Have only glanced at it but it looks to have more information and could be more useful than the BBC one.

TheGhostOfPortoPast · 23/12/2013 09:20

was a gorgeous morning in Brussels. Getting increasingly gloomy looking as we approach Calais. no wind and rain yet. I don't think dh quite believes me about the storm. Grin Grin Grin

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 09:26

Will have a look at the guardian one once I've set breakfast up :)

You are euro tunnellingit aren't you Porto? Your dh will have a lovely surprise when he arrives! (Though the worst wont be til later)

Wind and rain in the Cheshire Gap, but nothing particularly out of the ordinary at the moment.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 23/12/2013 09:33

Thank you OhYouM.. So gales for us Sad. Currently have a bit of wind and fast rain coming down.

TheGhostOfPortoPast · 23/12/2013 09:35

yep. we are about 30 mins from Calais. hoping to reach destination before it gets too bad.

LadyCelia · 23/12/2013 09:41

It's getting bloody blowy here in Surrey already, I am hoping to rush through my work this morning (must get off MN!) and get home early.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 09:51

toffee - very much so. I would make sure garden items are secure - especially if you have a trampoline.

oldsilver · 23/12/2013 10:10

It's not very pleasant here in Bristol. Howling out there already and torrential, driving rain - we are meant to go see Father Christmas today ...hopefully we'll still be in the 3 hour queue during the worst of it.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 23/12/2013 10:12

still a lot of concern today for the south from some well seasoned, notoriously calm forecasters.

I hoe that queue is indoors oldsilver, it may calm down a little this afternoon before it picks up again.

Xmas Smile it is or at least the start is Xmas Wink My cat deterrent, which is quite heavy just blew down the garden.

pepperrabbit · 23/12/2013 10:19

North East Hants here, a bit blowy, but nothing special so far, it was wetter at 8am when I dropped DH and the 3DCs at the station this morning - take your kids to work day!
I am a tiny bit worried about them getting home mid afternoon from Waterloo - DH was being very blasé about potential disruption [fcross]
Serve him right if he's stuck on a train for 3 hours with 3 unhappy kids, but I feel a bit sorry for the DC Sad

So, the storm for Friday/Saturday:

At the moment gFS has it on the edge of NI by Thursday midnight. Its a different sort of set up from today, at the moment it is modelled to be a mature storm and slowly weakening as it moves over us. Nevertheless the central pressure is forecast to go down to 940hPa.

By Friday evening it will be affecting the whole of the UK with strong/gale force winds. The rain although heavy in places shouldnt be as problematic today, except that it will be falling on saturated ground. Id say at the moment the worst affected areas look to be northern england and the midlands, but this may well change. It is a very slow moving storm and unfortunately will cause issues right through Saturday for the north.

Outlook is for it to remain very unsettled but some hints of winter arriving in January.

Getting a bit blowy here in London. Thought it might be fun to record pressures - 998 at 10.20.
