So r4 reports the environment agency as saying for this afternoon right down the east coast to Essex. Just eating my breakfast so will dig out the relevant info in a little bit.

Oh I see Parsing (kind of).

Weknowwhoyouare · 05/12/2013 15:08

Thanks :) she's not a great sailor so should be fun for her friend.

AnAdventureInCakeAndWine · 05/12/2013 15:08

Part of the issue (at least thinking back 25 years or so, and cross-channel ferries haven't changed that much) may well that it's very difficult to get into Dover harbour in a storm, so ferries end up bobbing up and down (and side to side, and up and down again...) just outside it. There were gale-force winds when we came back from my school exchange to Germany and we were stuck out there for an extra three hours. Below decks was wall-to-wall people being sick, while up on deck you'd feel OK but would be soaked to the skin (I got bronchitis and missed a couple of weeks of school... ah, happy memories...)

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 05/12/2013 15:09

Our power keeps going out for short periods. Fully prepared if it goes completely. At the moment the annoying thing is everything resetting itself loudly. May just unplug the answer phone as it goes through all it's options and saved messages each time.
Nothing compared to my friend (dcs go to school with mine) who must be being evacuated at the moment. I've sent her a text offering sanctuary but no reply. She has family near though.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 15:10

Jayne, that must be highly irritating! I hope your friend is ok.

Wonder how they are preparing at Sizewell.

Sellafield was on safety checks earlier according to local press.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 15:24

It has a 10m high sea defence in front of it, so I reckon it should be fine :)

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 15:29

Note that you need to be prepared well before the peak high tide is expected as it may not coincide entirely with the high tide time.
Up to 34 severe flood warnings now from 23 at lunch time.

I live in sheffield, its been windy but not that bad, should I be worried?

I was stuck in the city in 2007 when it flooded, will it be like that or are we safe as not by the sea?

(im ill and have fuzzy head and cant think stright!)

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 15:34

Naked - you should be fine. The flooding is all from the sea. 2007 was from deluges from the sky! Hope you feel better soon!

thanks for the link to the Dutch map. My mum in in Friesland, in a part of the Netherlands that used to be sea. She volunteers at the country's only steam water pump (a world heritage site)see herewhich gets put into action if the conditions are such that the electric pumps cannot cope with keeping the water pumped away.
I figure it will be called upon soon then....

NakedTigarCub · 05/12/2013 15:36

Cool thank you,

Hope everyone stays safe

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 15:39

Thats interesting number9 :)

I see a whole village in Essex is being evacuated Jaywick

I'm going to be away from the pc for a few hours. stay safe everyone in the affected areas and please heed local advice.

I'm not too far from Sandwich so i am worrying now, here in herne bay its very windy at the moment but doesn't seem too bad? Is it meant to get worse? Worry about my dp's grandad as he is in a basement flat prone to flooding and he is very old.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 15:49

The wind shouldnt be too much worse, but you should check the environment agency to see if you are at flood risk. there are links on this thread - somewhere!

ParsingFancy · 05/12/2013 15:51

Downstairs, if he's in Herne Bay and prone to sea flooding, rather than flooding from high rainfall, I would suggest he comes and stays with you tonight, if that's easy to do.

High tide is around midnight, and although everything may well be fine and not top the sea wall, getting out of a basement flat in a hurry at midnight when the water's already coming would be no fun at all.

DownstairsMixUp · 05/12/2013 15:54

Thanks Parsing going to phone him now, he sometimes stays at his partners house who lives in a flat further away so I'm hoping he'll either stay there or come here.

SnapespeareSong · 05/12/2013 15:58

it's very dark outside - I'm in South East London, so very unlikely any coastal surge will find it's way to us (at least I hope not!) but I still want to go home straight away. sending you all good wishes and luck - especially to the recent caravan owners as I crave a caravan!

Rooners · 05/12/2013 16:00

Downstairs much of HB looks fine from the map, but there is part of the West side of town tht may flood,

up towards east/reculver side it looks fine as up the hill iyswim

Just spoke to mum. She said they have severe wind but no flood warnings in place, maybe the North Sea is heading to the UK coast??

digerd · 05/12/2013 16:25

Oh, my neighbours opposite have gone to near Southend on the coast in Essex today for the weekend as they always do. They have a bungalow there. Hope they and their little dog will be OK
.

Weknowwhoyouare · 05/12/2013 16:27

My mum is back over , they set off earlier to aim for an earlier ferry. Said it was rough but ok.

ouryve · 05/12/2013 16:29
