So r4 reports the environment agency as saying for this afternoon right down the east coast to Essex. Just eating my breakfast so will dig out the relevant info in a little bit.

boschy, dont get too stressed. You sound like you are making sensible preps and I would be prepared, but hopefully you will be well protected.

Does the Thames barrier sort of deflect the water so it goes somwhere else down the coast?

Just wondering if that might make other places worse iyswim.

Inland Kent here and on a hill but moving to place by the sea soon and checking flood risk maps frantically!

NotActuallyAMum · 05/12/2013 13:26

MrsDeVere I feel your pain, I'm worried about our caravan too, it's in Ingoldmells just north of Skegness. I too had dreamed of owning one for years, we've only had it since March

Everything crossed for everyone that it won't be bad as they fear it might

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 13:30

It does Rooners. The Thames estuary can soak up a lot of water, but the problem is where its been built on.
Fascinating place to visit!

Boschy if you look on Environment agency page linked to earlier it has a good flood plan and what to do, turning off mains elec gas and water, and disconnect washing machine and dishwasher,

have you any bricks to stand tables on etc

documents inc insurance upstairs plus fill things with fresh water (camping water containers are good)

put plugs in baths and weigh down with bags of earth, sand bags in loo I think?! Not sure.

good luck, we are north of you, hope you escape Ok

sorry about typing, on spare keyboard

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 13:31

Fab suggestions from Rooners. Theres also more on this thread

Not fully reported but BBC News mentiined that Humberside police have been issuing warnings and advice too.

NB: important bit from the Norfolk police page. Do NOT wade through flood water or let children paddle in it, even of it looks safe. It can dislodge manhole covers and that's an unthinkably horrible accident to happen.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 13:34

absolutely meditrina.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 05/12/2013 13:34

Stay safe everyone
I'm going to go and keep myself occupied until my children come home. Feeling twitchy

ParsingFancy · 05/12/2013 13:35

Oh shit.

Thanks so much for the heads up, OYBBK, shall call my dad pronto to at least get stuff upstairs and sort out an OFRS.

dreamingbohemian · 05/12/2013 13:36

Twit where is your DS headed in Germany? I'm reading some German news stories as DH is in the north there (although on the Baltic side) and it does sound like it will be quite bad in parts, they're expecting a big freeze tomorrow too.

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 05/12/2013 13:38

Suffolk and Essex coasts are being evacuated.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 13:41

twit - it might affect the ferries, however at least he will be going a low tide. Only thing to do is to lurk on their page.

Rooners · 05/12/2013 14:01

There is a severe warning (threat to life) in Sandwich, I love Sandwich, it
is beautiful.

hope all will be well

keep safe

Showy · 05/12/2013 14:05

DH is a copper. All non-uniformed staff, desk workers, people not on shift, people on shift, malingerers and hangers on have been warned for work to aid evacuation tonight. DH is coming home from his regular shift now and is doing a 7-7 night shift tonight and a 7-7 night shift tomorrow to facilitate this. He advises that if you are on the Norfolk coast in a high risk area, evacuate if you can. They are taking this very, very seriously.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 05/12/2013 14:11

Say thank you to your Dh please SoH

boschy · 05/12/2013 14:14

hope he and his colleagues all stay safe showy. DD2 insists on dancing tonight... so will sort out photo albums and house insurance etc when DD1 gets home.

Rooners · 05/12/2013 14:15

Where are you Showy? Are you guys safe?

Twit · 05/12/2013 14:15

Cologne, dreamingbohemian, thanks OYMLK might pack extra snacks in case they are held up.

The clouds have been whizzing over us all day, heading east. Good luck to everyone.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 14:17

Good luck to your dh showy. I hope people head it, so he doesnt have to help too many people.

I am in E London and tend to follow the tides, the levels being seen now are abnormally low compared to prediction. I assumed the Thames Barrier might be to blame but it seems the whole estuary is rather low. See

www.pla.co.uk/hydrographics/ltoverview.cfm

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 14:24

I'm listening to the press conference on bbc norfolk:

Police: Saying worse than 2008 in Great Yarmouth when there was nearly a breach. Police visiting 9000 homes to urge evacuation. Some respite centres for people who cant stay with friends/relatives.
If cant evacuate due to ill health contact police or council who can aid with evacuation.
Talking about 3 tides 10:45, 10am , 9pm.

Council chap: 6 sites for sandbags around the borough, 856100 is number to call for advice. 50,000 sand bags in stock, 20,000 been used in two hours.

police: dozens of police officers arriving, level of police officers will cover for whole flood period. Also nhs and voluntary orgs helping. Have 1500 places in respite centres but looking for more, so please try and stay at friends instead. Very least move upstairs.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 05/12/2013 14:25

nemno, rainfall has been low which does help a bit. However, the surge will still cause issues.

OP posts:
nemno · 05/12/2013 14:31

OYMK this is not likely to be because of rainfall, if you click on a location in my link you'll see the earlier high tide this morning met predictions. I have no idea why there is an anomaly (but can speculate to myself about conditions further north in the North Sea causing it); it will be interesting to watch the graph.

I do hope everyone is ok, it's a bit worrying for the East Coast.
