2013/2014 Winter - Should we be getting ready for 'snowmageddon'?

According to this article, based on past winters and other factors, this winter could be a very chilly one.

I don't understand half of the things used to predict why this may be but I'm wondering if I should start making sure we're ready for it, should it come?

The daily express do something similar every year :)
I'm away at the moment so I'll check out the latest situation when I'm back.

SpookyTeacakes · 12/10/2013 17:44

Love the winter weather threads Grin

I did see a gritter a couple of weeks ago Hmm wasn't gritting though

johnworf · 12/10/2013 19:20

If the article in the DE is anything to go by we should be running out and stock piling snow shovels, snow boots, salt and anything else we can lay our hands on. No wonder people start to panic. Hmm

I'd better stock up on wine and choccies then....oh and maybe a few tins of soup for the children and Mr leesmum......just in case!!

digerd · 13/10/2013 07:05

8.6 degrees last night at 1am, but now 11. We'll see what the weather has in store for us today here in SE. It felt very mild and muggy again at 5pm yesterday and had been quite sunny all day.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/10/2013 07:20

Sneakily mning under bed covers so as not to disturb dh.

met office predictions in words and graphs at the bottom of page up to dec.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/10/2013 07:27

It's not too dissimilar to what said on the 6th except it leans a little towards blocking patterns which can in winter lead to colder than average temps and it also leans to being a bit wetter than average ( I'm not quite sure how that ties in with being blocked!) . It also highlights huge uncertainty.

Perihelion · 13/10/2013 15:34

Getting bored of the E/NE wind direction now.......

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/10/2013 16:00

Wednesday it will probably switch to SE Grin

digerd · 13/10/2013 16:33

Oh NO, NE is the direction my sitting room 2.38 x 1.80 bow window faces and causes freezing down draughts Sad. We rarely get NE winds here. Will have to put the boiler onto MAX and room thermostat up to 22. The costAngry. It was mild today still, even if it was only 13 degrees. I love a crisp, clean air, but not an icy blast.

digerd · 13/10/2013 16:34

Only 11 atm. but lots of blue sky. Hope it clouds over tonight as keeps the temps up.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/10/2013 16:41

Digerd it's the northern half that have been having NE winds. Down south it's westerlies or NW .

digerd · 13/10/2013 17:56

We have had very little wind - only that one day- and at 5pm today, as the sky had cleared somewhat, it did feel colder even with no wind. But not eskimo outfit weather yet. 10.9 out atm.
Pleased I will not get the cold NE wind , thanks for thatSmile.
In Germany, when we had an east wind in the winter it was like a whip-lash. I wore a woolen scarf once and in a flash it had frozen over my mouth from the moisture in my breath - must have been one of the -15 days or even lower . Despite us walking westwards Shock.

johnworf · 13/10/2013 18:30

Bum. That means we're in for cold (lazy) winds here oop north. Hmm

Taken from UK Weather Forecast Facebook page:

"Understandably many of you are asking about the Daily Express article. It is a load of rubbish. We expect a colder than average winter, they will be snow, rain, ice, milder interludes and blizzards at times which is expected during winter. Certainly not the worst winter in 100 years! Most weather organisations struggle to forecast outside 30 days never mind saying that the UK is going to be in a freezer from November through until March and to predict it with any confidence.

Spread the word, a colder than average winter is on the way but in the freezer from November to March, sorry it's not happening. You are in the best hands during the winter period as we provide accurate in-depth forecasts and snow risk discussion".

First paragraph is superbly said, not so sure about the second Grin

johnworf · 13/10/2013 23:01

It was more the jist of the article. Agree on the second paragraph. I do like their forecasts on their page though Smile

met office response to the Express.

johnworf · 15/10/2013 21:26

Looks like it's a story the DE wheel out each year then? Why do they do that?

Hmm

digerd · 16/10/2013 06:07

The coldest night so far here in the SE. 4.5 at 3am. Now 6.

SpookyTeacakes · 16/10/2013 06:40

Brrrrr S/E here too. Glad it's going to warm up a bit after today!

leesmum · 16/10/2013 07:29

Chilly morning for us too, and the most beautiful red sky.

mankyscotslass · 16/10/2013 07:32

Beautiful sky here too - and DS (Yr7) has gone off to school with no jumper - he is going to freeze!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/10/2013 07:59

I have no idea johnworf. They must think their readers have the memories of goldfish! Of course if they stick to exactly the same story each time then once in a while they will end up being right!

Lots of wet coming up over the next 5 days.

Perihelion · 16/10/2013 10:20

No wind atm, was 4C overnight and waiting for the rain.
