met office warnings For tomorrow for Scotland and NW England, extending to Yorkshire. NW Scotlant in particular looks awful with blizzard conditions.

I'm not quite sure about the warnings for England, I'm going to be really interested to see how they pan out. Tuesday scattered sleet and snow showers for many.

We've had snow flurries through the day, pretty but feeling very cold in the wind. I think that around the Thames estuary and parts of eases there might be a bit of accumulation into the morning.

It's been snowing here all day, pretty much. Sometimes it's been quite hard. No accumulation to speak of, though. Bit of a dusting on my car. It's stopped now.

WhispersOfWickedness · 22/02/2013 22:19

Virtually nothing here in north lincs.

mumat39 · 23/02/2013 01:37

The news came on after pretty woman and the very nice Jay Wynn said there won't be too much snow. How can that be when it's soooo cold and soon cloudy and grey? I don't get it:(

TobyLerone · 23/02/2013 08:42

According to local news we're due more today and maybe into tomorrow.

please let rugby be off!

LillethTheCat · 23/02/2013 08:46

Woke up to a layer of snow, its not very deep, but enough to make me not go to Parkrun this morning (Its easily drivable if I had to, but since I dont have to Im not going to). According to the weather it will stop today and be clear this weekend. Hopefully it will be clear then on Monday for life to get back to normal.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/02/2013 08:51

Mumat, it's because we are being dominated by a high pressure to our north. It is known as anticyclonic gloom.

OP posts:
digerd · 23/02/2013 09:21

S.Herts
Just noticed a thin flurry of snow falling almost horizontally from the NE.

digerd · 23/02/2013 09:28

Gloom is the right word.
Vague bells are ringing about that word anticyclone - didn't it mean boiling hor sunny weather in the summer, I seem to remember from yonks ago?

mumat39 · 23/02/2013 09:55

Oooh OYBBK, that sounds almost apocalyptic. Very dramatic!

A quick question for you. Do High's bring cold in the winter and hot weather in the summer?

I always stupidly assumed that lows were cold and highs were hot, but I don't think that's right.

It's trying to snow here. There's a very yellow light at the moment, very grey and a bit breezy. A few biggish flakes floating around but nothing to get too excited about.

Hulababy · 23/02/2013 12:42

Anything likely at high end of Sheffield tonight/ tomorrow am? Especially snake pass area?

Fly home later today and we live other end of the snake...

mankyscotslass · 23/02/2013 13:26

Snowing here now, very lightly.

WhispersOfWickedness · 23/02/2013 20:06

Snowing and settling here...

digerd · 23/02/2013 20:41

I know that. Yes highs in summer bring hot sunny weather and highs in winter cold, but usually also sunny, except for this 'GLOOM' kitten mentioned over the Thames estuary. < peeved face> Live in the Thames valley area. I loved the sunny weather we had last week, but the icy air we have now is just nasty.

digerd · 23/02/2013 20:44

ps.
We did have the occasional flash of sun today at mid-day. This morning in the snow flurries it was quite pleasant < dressed up like an eskimo>

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/02/2013 22:54

Sorry for the belated reply hula, nothing that should cause any issues.

Thanks. That's good to hear. At airport about to go ad board. Was 99F earlier, wonder what it will be in Manchester when we land!

funkybuddah · 24/02/2013 07:54

Woken to a thin covering this morning and its still snowing, lightly but ocasional hard falls.

Dont think it will amount to anything though....I hope it doesnt, Im done with winter

InMySpareTime · 24/02/2013 08:55

As I understand it, high pressure brings settled weather as it pushes fronts around its edges, so if it's clear and sunny it stays that way (hot in summer, cold in winter due to hours of daylight vs night cooling) but if it's cloudy, the cloud stays too.
Low pressure brings more "interesting" weather as air tries to move into the lower pressured area, bringing windy weather and throwing front after front our way.
But I'm sure if because I'm wrong someone more qualified will correct me.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/02/2013 09:39

Not quite mumat, generally you do get hotter weather with a high in the summer because the air is still and therefore the heat can build up. Also, if it is a clear high then solar radiation adds effectively to the heating.

In the winter, highs can give very cold night time temperatures if the sky is clear because the heat can radiate away into space. But even in the summer the same process occurs, hence the very cold desert temperatures that you see.

An awful lot of the temperature though is down to where the air has come from. Meteorologists tend to classify air masses as being arctic, polar continental, polar maritime, tropical continental, tropical maritime. Continental air tends to be drier, maritime; moister, polar;colder and tropical warmer.

Cloudy high pressures tend to have had their origin over sea (maritime) and therefore have trapped moisture in them or the moisture can infiltrate them. If there is little wind you end up with a temperature inversion trapping the moisture (and any pollution too). A temperature inversion is where you end up with cold close to the ground and then a layer of warmer air further up.

Thanks for the explanation everyone.

There seem to be so many factors to consider. No wonder it's so interesting!

OYBBK, over on snow watch there's speculation that we're in for a very cold March with more snow and no sign of spring just yet. Any thoughts? The last few years March has been one of the warmer months so I was assuming it would be the same this year.

Thanks again for all your time in explaining everything over the winter. It has certainly made watching the weather loads more fun even if the snow has been less than I had hoped for. So here are some Thanks and some Wine to say thanks as we go into the last week of winter.

Xxxx

digerd · 24/02/2013 13:23

We had a very long cold winter which extended through March and into April April, in the last few years. All the early spring flowing bushes, including my Camelias, had to wait and wait. But when the temperature eventually was warm/mild enough, I had the most prolific and amazing flowering garden. And because it remained very cool for the time of year, the blooms kept going on and on for ages. Had my May flowering Rambler blooming at the same time as the spring Camelias, and one of my early summer Clematis too.

mumat39 · 24/02/2013 14:27

Divers, my memory is terrible, but I definitely remember a few March's over the last few years whe we've had a week or two of very warm weather. Maybe it was longer ago than I think it was. My brain thinks everything happened 'the other day' Hmm

mumat39 · 24/02/2013 14:28

Digers, not divers, sorry! Flippin auto correct!

mumat39 · 24/02/2013 14:28

AAAARRRGGGHHHH! I meant digerd.
