For when this one gets full up :)

Our snow (all 1cm of it) has blinking melted. It was only there for a few hours!

Xroads · 21/01/2013 15:07

OYBBK - any news on the midlands, I've been stuck in since Friday lunch time and I want to get back to normal now? Grin

EasyFromNowOn · 21/01/2013 15:29

It has finally stopped snowing in North Staffs, well, I hope so anyway. It's been pretty constant since Thursday evening, although we did have a bit of melting yesterday.

Are we likely to get any more?

Sparklegeek · 21/01/2013 15:32

Had about 10 cm on the Essex coast yesterday, all schools open today though so more now please! (Mind you, I work in a school with a never-cosed-due-to-snow policy Sad )

Sparklegeek · 21/01/2013 15:33

*closed, not cosed

I've had more than enough of the frozen stuff. Yes it's pretty to look at across fields and rooftops, and yes it can be fun to play in, but when it's compacted to sheet ice and just trying to get 100 metres down the road involves taking your life in your hands it's just horrible. This sort of weather makes me really anxious - it only takes a second to slip and break something, then you can be laid up for months. It makes me want to stay holed up at home until it's all thawed, but there seems little hope of that round our way anytime soon.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/01/2013 16:30

mushpeas, you really do need something like yaktrax. They take all of the fear out of walking on ice.

behindlock, I'm not sure where people got the idea of snow for surrey? I've heard it from a few people. There was the possibility of some snow showers here and there but I didnt see anything for more generalised snow in your region.

nothing much showing for sheffield or surrey over the next couple of days. Its possible that the snow in the SW tomorrow may just about affect Surrey, but I wouldnt hold my breath.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/01/2013 16:36

In general a less snow picture over the next few days, some rain or snow for parts of the SW tomorrow and some scattered snow showers about the place. Maybe some more generalised snow on Friday.

I did get some when we had bad weather last year, but it wasn't like it is now and I didn't really think they made much difference at the time. I've got some decent walking boots which I wore this morning and I thought they'd cope but they weren't much help, so I will dig out the yaktrax to try for tomorrow - I'm not messing around with my bike again I'll just try to get to the main road and stump up for the bus which goes most of the way in. The city centre really isn't too bad at all.

I've read in reviews the yaktrax still aren't wonderful at solid ice but I guess they're likely to be better than nothing!

pigsinmud · 21/01/2013 16:42

Kitten - met office had light snow forecast for my bit of surrey from lunchtime, with heavy snow at 3! By 11am all the forecasts of snow had vanished from met office website.

digerd · 21/01/2013 16:48

South Herts
Everything is dripping off the higher branches and we had +5 today at lunchtime. Back to +2 now. We have warning of being very icy tomorrow morning. No snow today.

LillethTheCat · 21/01/2013 16:49

So is the next attack at the weekend then do we think?

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee · 21/01/2013 17:11

The snow on the roof has started to melt, the gutters are overflowing and in one place it's dripping down onto a pot plant, the pot plant looks like an ice sculpture - it's impressive, but weird. I think the sun must have been melting the roof snow, but the plant was in the shade?! Sadly too dark to take a photo :( Will be gone by tomorrow. It was like a table top ice sculpture.

CarrieDon · 21/01/2013 17:12

From the BBC weather website:

"Tuesday
Eastern counties, dry for much of the day. Further west, rain, sleet, turning to snow inland, soon into Hampshire, extending northeastwards, local significant accumulations possible. Very cold in freshening easterlies."

Ooooh! Local significant accumulations possible. What do you think Kitten?!

awaywego1 · 21/01/2013 17:25

Thanks OYBBK Smile

BehindLockNumberNine · 21/01/2013 17:29

I think it was from the BBC oybbk. And we cling on to all hope here Grin

But definately melting now, which is a shame Sad

Is this it for the winter? Shall I put the sledge back into the loft?

digerd · 21/01/2013 17:59

I don't remember seeing any sun today, although the sky was lighter .

hopenglory · 21/01/2013 18:04

Hey Kitten, any hope for Devon over the next 24 hours or so? Metcheck seems to think there might be, but I don't trust them anymore Grin

pepperrabbit · 21/01/2013 18:20

chipping in answer to your much earlier question, DH said even sardines would have found the train squashed. He's just rung to say he's on a train home except it appears to be doing a tour of most of the south of england on the way Hmm.
We had a lot of melting too, the porch was like a waterfall when the sun came out.
BBC has eradicated all predictions of snow for us this week now, but expects -5 tonight. Brrr!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/01/2013 18:43

carriedon, for parts of Devon, Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire, then where it doesnt rain , yes there could be a reasonable amount of snow. I think Hampshire way, more likely to be flurries, but never say never as it seems that snow can be a fickle creature!

schilke, thats interesting :) We must have been looking at different models!

I wouldnt give up for the winter yet. First we need to get through Saturday. GFS is at the moment going for a lot of precipitation which looks like away from the south would be snow. It then goes for a big warm up for the end of the month, followed by cooling down in early Feb.

LillethTheCat · 21/01/2013 18:50

It better not had snow bad on Sat. I have family to go and see. Its only an hour away on the A1, but we've not seen them since Christmas. Im going to say that it's too early tell and some unexpected wind (or whatever) will push the snow away. until Im proved wrong of course over the next couple of days

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee · 21/01/2013 18:59

Digerd - that's a shame, it was a beautiful sunny day here today :)

Pepper - Poor DH! I heard that the trains were stopping at every station and then some :( He'll need a nice Brew or Wine when he gets in!!

I don't trust the BBC - I'd look at the Met site if I were you because that's what OYBBK said!

[I can almost put money on it sleeting, being windy & cold and generally vile tomorrow on the Hampshire/Berkshire/Surrey border. I have to go out and can't take the car!]
