incoming CME

Strong geomagnetic storm expected.

which basically gives a reasonable chance of aurora down to lower latitudes but could also cause issues with some satellites.

Ah that explains everything thank you!

ohyouBadBadkitten · 08/03/2012 07:51

I've decided to wear my foil hat as we discovered we had no internet at home yesterday morning, so think we're doomed already! So I'm using my phone, wearing my hat and sheltering under the dining table. I have wine though so I think I'm ok!

whomovedmychocolate · 08/03/2012 11:15

My phone is on the fritz and the scutnav is confused. Hurrah!

throckenholt · 08/03/2012 11:19

I had heard that satnavs are likely to be affected for a while. Worst this afternoon I think.

Madsometimes · 08/03/2012 11:42

Well I abandoned Plan A which was to construct a Faraday cage from tin foil and duct tape, and sit inside with a supply of Kendal mint cake and a trusty St Bernard dog. I don't have any mint cake, and you never see St Bernard's any more.

Instead I went out in the lovely sunshine, and am still here to tell the tale Smile. But I still have an irrational fear of CME's because I have a pacemaker.

GloriaSmud · 08/03/2012 12:48

We have the internet back!

The world can't end today anyway because we have the Queen visiting here in Leicester today

I can still share homemade Wine if anyone wants some?

GloriaSmud · 08/03/2012 12:52

If anyone has a chance to see it, this weeks Horizon was about Solar storms. 'Tis still available on i-Player or looks like it's repeated late tomorrow night, on BBC HD.

ohyouBadBadkitten · 08/03/2012 15:09

Madsometimes - I did think about you and wondered how you were doing!!
Horizon wasnt bad apart from the hyperbole.

I've only seen a bit of Horizon I fell asleep half way through so need to watch the rest.
Be interesting to see how far south any aurora is visible

How are you feeling, OYBBK?

whomovedmychocolate · 08/03/2012 18:26

I have to say that Horizon episode was the most soporific thing I've ever seen, I was snoring within six minutes, and I recorded it, then fell asleep (at 2pm) when I put it back on as well. Grin

ohyouBadBadkitten · 08/03/2012 19:19

so-so Gloria - still waiting for my appt with the consultant. It would be great if I had a date at least.
How funny about the Horizon episode. It was a funny old programme - most people who watched would have just wanted to know - are we all going to die or is it going to be the end of civilisation as we know it. Instead it went off onto random theories about exactly how CME's are formed.

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 08/03/2012 20:14

Grin at whomoved. Horizon isn't as good as it used to be!

OYBBK ~ life does seem to be in limbo when you're waiting for appointments. Sending 'get a move on' vibes to your consultant!

ohyouBadBadkitten · 08/03/2012 21:12

thank you :)

nothing yet aurora wise for the UK perhaps around midnight...?

OP posts:
ohyouBadBadkitten · 08/03/2012 21:13

oops my mistake - northern Scotland may be able to see some (depending on clouds of course!)

OP posts:
BelleEnd · 08/03/2012 21:14

Oooooh! Ooooh! Oooh! This is why we lost the Sky connection today, isn't it?

I had to look after my children...

ohyouBadBadkitten · 08/03/2012 21:18

possibly BelleEnd, it has caused some satellites issues. Not sure if it has affected Astra (sky satellite). Only one 'news' article on it.

OP posts:
whomovedmychocolate · 08/03/2012 21:39

Well it better not fuck with House at 10pm or I'll be up there on my spaceship kicking electromagnetic arse with my etch a sketch Grin

ohyouBadBadkitten · 08/03/2012 22:26

aurora line is moving south - whole of scotland (away from lights and clouds) has a chance of seeing it now:) Perhaps northern England later?

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 09/03/2012 06:27

Wonderful picture here taken in Iceland. I did notice Iceland had a good chance of having some aurora so I've been looking at the webcams to see if I can spot any. Nothing yet!
Looks like there could be some more solar activity today.

ohyouBadBadkitten · 09/03/2012 06:34

its a beautiful picture :) and what an impressive sunspot it is turning into. I think that we could be in for an active time, esp as it rotates our way.
