Arrrrrrggggghhh............at least I didn't stay up late last night to go aurora hunting.

ohyouBadBadkitten · 09/03/2012 17:49

Another geomagnetic storm due in a couple of days. info here and here Looks to be a pretty impressive full on hit. However aurora wise, looks cloudy across the uk on the 11th.

(current storm still seems to be under way)

NE Scotland may have a chance of seeing it in the early hours Monday night if the cloud clears away quick enough :)

About 11 or 12 years ago, I spents hours driving around central Scotland, trying to get away from the clouds to see the aurora. Think I clocked up about 200 miles Blush to see nothing.

ohyouBadBadkitten · 09/03/2012 19:39

that sounds like a very depressing night! Will try to remember to do a more detailed cloud forecast on Sunday evening for you!

really think it is worth looking outside, esp if you are NE england and if you are lucky cloud wise Scotland. Indications show that there is a reasonable chance of aurora tonight. Close to midnight is best but worth checking the skies anytime now really :)

OYBBK, the pointless driving night was actually rather funny. Passed through some strange wee villages I didn't even know existed. Anyway, just off to have a wee peek across the Forth just in case........

SophieNeveu · 10/03/2012 01:39

Did you see anything up North?

Labradorlover · 10/03/2012 09:45

Nothing last night. Didn't expect anything and only popped round the corner. Imo that I've only got a chance to see stuff here in Scotland when the Aurora Watch graph is at least orange. The amazing aurora I saw in 2003 was when the graph had red colomns to the top, plus clear skies and no moon.

ohyouBadBadkitten · 11/03/2012 17:59

looks like some good potential for tonight.

Brambleschooks · 11/03/2012 18:54

We are completely clouded over here in the nw. :(

ohyouBadBadkitten · 11/03/2012 20:24

blow it down here. beautiful night, but too far south for aurora (unless it was utterly mega)

OP posts:
ohyouBadBadkitten · 11/03/2012 20:25

very quit at the moment

OP posts:
ohyouBadBadkitten · 11/03/2012 20:25

quiet not quit.

Gloria, it looks good doesn't it, but it doesn't bear much relation to what's happening IMO. I think it's based on optomistic probability. The NOAA Auroral Oval which is usually on Spaceweather seems accurate ( have friends in Shetland ) but it's not functioning atm.

jaquelinehyde · 11/03/2012 21:14

Not looked outside yet tonight but I will go and check when my film has finished.

I have been lucky enough to see an aurora 3-4 times since January, it has been very, very cloudy all day though so I don't hold out much hope for tonight.

Will report back soon.

ohyouBadBadkitten · 15/03/2012 18:03

red alert! shame its not dark.

And cloudy.....

Donki · 15/03/2012 21:19

Looks like nice auroras if you happen to live in Finland or Northern Norway.
Nothing here though - even if the weather wasn't being British. :(

Still, I live in hope!

ohyouBadBadkitten · 15/03/2012 22:04

ah well. maybe one day....
