Here we are...

Will post a link on the old thread and be back in a sec.

And a good job too, as it's now too big to accept new messages! Hurrah for puree lovers!

Ok, I have a question - how are you getting on with your LOs using cutlery to feed themselves? DS seems to be v keen to have a go now - pulls the spoon off me and shoves it in, can get some food in if I load the spoon, etc. I have a set of cutlery with suckers to stick to the highchair tray, with a curly 'string' so they can be stretched. Oh, that is a crap description isn't it?? Anyway, I tried it tonight, complete with bowl with suction pad, and it was a partial success. I put some of DS's tea in the bowl, and he had a go with the cutlery, but then tried to stick his face in the bowl, gave up and started using his hands (with me feeding him too)!!

Just wondered what the rest of you were doing? My plan is to use the bowl with a bit of his food in it and give him a normal baby spoon, and I'll continue to feed him.

neenztwinz · 25/03/2009 22:57

DS tries to grab the spoon now too and he is quite good at feeding himself, only when I load the spoon. He is not very fast though and a lot goes on the floor and him! I have some suction bowls but they were quite cheap off ebay and the DTs just pull them off! So I think I will invest in better ones. Which ones do you have whinegums?

Well done on the refrained thread title - I was going to put something like 'Chat thread for those of us who spoonfeed our babies like 99% of the population' or something like that! Only kidding, the BLWers don't annoy me now like they used to - they are OK when you get to know them .

giantkatestacks · 26/03/2009 08:15

I had those suctiony things with ds and he just pulled them off the tray.

My dd will now often pull the spoon off me and more or less get the spoon in her mouth - much better with sticky porridge than yoghurt

I saw one of my friends 15 month old have far better luck with a fork of all things so might try spearing stuff soon.

We are all still ill here with the chesty/fluey thing thats going round - looking after dcs when you're ill is just rubbish [selfpity emoticon]

whinegums · 26/03/2009 09:49

Neenz - brain is puree too these days, so couldn't think of a smarty pants title! Ooooh get you, with your new BLW chums

I got the cutlery and bowl online somewhere, but it doesn't have a brand or anything. They do seem to stick quite well at the moment, I couldn't get the bloody things off last night! It did take a few goes to get them stuck on though, if there's any crumbs or anything on the tray, forget it.

Hope you all feel better soon GKS.

OP posts:
mookickkick · 26/03/2009 10:26

Why not just stick the bowls down with some weetabix ?

Sorry to hear you're all poorly kate. DD has had a chesty cough for a few days but it doesn't seem to bother her too much. Hope you feel better soon!

neenztwinz · 26/03/2009 10:49

He he, yeah all my chums !

Get better soon Kate, i am not feeling 100% either so can sympathise.

giantkatestacks · 26/03/2009 10:51

Am just why it always seems to come on for a Monday so you have to get through the whole week on your own then you're feeling a bit brighter by the weeknd when you dont need the help so much. grr.

Also why has my dd started doing great big poos in new nappies - this is very annoying indeed. double grr.

neenztwinz · 26/03/2009 10:57

Oh yes that's very annoying! DS went through a stage of pooing at 3pm ish just after I changed his nappy after his nap. I hold on a bit longer now before changing him cos his nappy is not dirty after his nap.

Both the DTs fed themselves their porridge this morning (with me loading the spoon). It is very messy and takes a lot longer but I suppose they have to learn sometime!

neenztwinz · 26/03/2009 10:59

I always feel tired on a Monday cos the weekend is often more draining even though there are two of us here.

Habbibu · 26/03/2009 13:53

Right, puree bods - I've done the finger foods advice - now can someone do the puree bit for Spiny here.

neenztwinz · 26/03/2009 14:42

OK!

Maria2007 · 26/03/2009 20:37

Hey, new thread, how exciting! Just found this actually

Anyway. Sorry I've disappeared (yet again). The reason is the same old, same old: sleep sleep sleep (or lack of it). Seriously, our dummy-addiction situation is getting silly. I'm talking waking every 1-2 hours from 11 pm onwards to replug dummy. DP is now insisting we ditch the dummy, do it cold turkey, do it NOW. I've now become the dummy-defender, saying 'but DS loves his dummy', or arguing that we should 'help DS find it & put it in his mouth on his own'. All this procrastinating means loaaaaaaaads of sleepless nights & feeling like a zombie all day long. Sigh.

On the plus side. We're leaving for greece & will be there for about 20 days (back mid-april). I'll definitely be MN-ing from there too, so won't say goodbye. I'm harbouring a secret wish- that my mum will look after DS for a few nights & DP & I can go to a hotel- i.e. bathe & feed DS, put him to his cot, & then LEAVE. And return in the morning. Hopefully it'll happen, unless my mum point-blank refuses due to DS being such a crappy sleeper.

Anyway, on the puree side of things. Things are going ok. We've moved on to fish now too which DS didn't like that much. What's been a huge success is tiny pasta shapes (e.g. stellette) with a plain tomato sauce to which I add a tiny bit of single cream & mild cheddar. Also, DS loved the beef dish I gave him, but the smell of the poo was just horrific. Fish smells much nicer, if you ask me .

anyway. will sign off here. Hoping to speak to you all soon again (which I will, since as I said I'll have internet access at my mum's too). Am dreading the flight for now.... it may get really awful with a fidgety / wriggly 8 month old on a flight! Wish me luck.

giantkatestacks · 26/03/2009 20:52

hey there - good luck! hope it all goes well...if you're still in trouble when you get back then I'll come over and get rid of the dummy...am very evil in the nightsleeping dept iyswim...

Have a great time we will want to hear what ds is eating over there...

artifarti · 27/03/2009 09:11

Oooh, new thread! Just marking my space really, no exciting puree news here. DS is loving everything except cheese and yoghurt, which he just holds in his mouth until it gets really spitty and then lets it all sloowwlly dribble out. He is also wedded to his expensive Plum porridge and is refusing any cheap substitutes, Weetabix, Oatabix etc. Might try proper porridge.

Still being a bit chicken on the finger foods. I did give him some avocado and peach slices and OMG the mess! I could never be a BLW-er on those grounds alone.

Hope all the mums and babies feel better soon.

mookickkick · 27/03/2009 13:35

have fun maria!!!

artifarti - i add loads of fruit to dd's porridge, such as bananas, pears, peaches. once i got lazy and squeezed in some ella's strawberry and apple puree. she went into a frenzy and hoovered up her weetabix.

whinegums · 27/03/2009 20:27

Neenz, I had to laugh earlier, on the sleep (lack of) thread I'm on, someone new to it said she'd been out to the shops to stock up on sweet potato and Oatibix. She didn't mention Medised though.

Artifarti, try Ready Brek rather than proper porridge - it's just oats blasted up, but easier and quicker to mix for the anklebiters. And Tesco's own version is exactly the same and half the price. DS scoffs it happily (as do I - we were never allowed Ready Brek when I was a kid, I think my mum thought it was some fancy processed cereal, when in fact it's just oats whizzed to sawdust).

Maria, have a fantastic time. We went through the same thing with the dummy - when DS was around 4.5 months, he would wake almost hourly to get replugged. We decided not to take it off him though, as we knew he'd soon be able to find and replace it himself. Which he now does - I put one of the MAM clips onto his grobag (I wouldn't do that until he was over 6 months old though, I was convinced something would go wrong - PFB etc!). You could try leaving dummies in his cot as well. It's not great, but right now, we go with the dummy, although I am expecting a battle further down the line!

Mookickkick, pmsl at your dd in a feeding frenzy.

I made DS rice pudding today (the slow 'proper' way in the oven, rather than my quick risotto method) and my God, it was delicious. I had to portion it and freeze it immediately, or he wouldn't have got any. I forgot how good proper baked rice pud is.

Maria2007 · 27/03/2009 20:38

(Thread hijack!)

Whinegums, thanks for the tip. We've also recently attached a MAM dummy holder onto DS's sleeping bag. It doesn't seem to work so far, as he hasn't yet learnt to find it himself. Any tips about how to help him along with this? I've been giving him the dummy in his hand (rather than directly in his mouth) during the day, hope that helps. But if these measures don't work for a couple of weeks, then we might consider going cold turkey

whinegums · 27/03/2009 20:46

DS just 'got it' eventually - we put it in the same place every night. He grabs it near the fastener, runs his hand down the cord and then he gets the dummy in his hand and puts it in. Let him wear the the holder during the day as well, so he gets used to it perhaps?

Are you in Greece yet??

OP posts:
Maria2007 · 27/03/2009 20:50

Yes, am in Greece, baby is asleep right now He was quite good on the plane, although for babies this age (8 months) it's hard to stay still...

OK it does seem encouraging the way you describe it. I'll leave it on during the day as well, then.

OK back to pureeing-news. It's funny, being here me & my mum already are bickering about food choices! She basically wants me to give DS a vile sugar-loaded concotion called 'biscuit-cream'. Basically it's sugary rusks of some kind mixed with milk. She also wants me to peel, cut, puree & serve fresh fruit for every meal instead of using my tried-and-tested freezer-cube method

whinegums · 27/03/2009 22:22

Let's hope his travels have worn him out then Maria! DS was great on the flights last week, he slept for most of them. To the extent that I was wondering if I should play him 'plane noise' overnight.

Ah, mums... Just nod and then do it your way anyway!

OP posts:
mookickkick · 29/03/2009 14:43

Good to hear that your babies travel well. We're just finalising some plans for July, which will involve flying and driving in Germany. I'll certainly try and keep breastfeeding until then, though I'm now down to 2 feeds a day so I hope that I don't get supply issues. Btw kate how is the cow's milk going? DD doesn't like formula in her doidy so I'm back to scrubbing bottles.

giantkatestacks · 29/03/2009 15:39

yep mookickkick its going well actually - she pretty much has it everyday at midafternoon in a tommy tippee lidded cup - we've got her a blue one so that she knows its going to be milk and not water -we did this with ds and it worked well - she guzzles it down now mostly and we've even had success at putting her to bed with it when I went out last week and that was a bit of a revelation

Am still doing 3 other feeds though and some days I forget to do the cows milk and so she has 4 - not ideal in my mind with settling in at nursery in 2 weeks but hey ho...

Maria - biscuit cream sounds really grim - surely thats not found in the books?

Deanna1977 · 29/03/2009 20:19

Waving to all you ladies & babies! Back on the weaning lark. 3 meals a day. He likes yogurt, butternut squash, apple & pear. (particulary loves pear) & baby rice of course. Not much in quantity & its very messy but its good fun. I do however need to get his weight up as he hasn't put on any in 3 weeks (probably due to his cold/runny bottom phase). Any advice on getting weight up with solids? He still has his full quota of milk (FF).

artifarti · 30/03/2009 08:13

Hi Deanna - avocado is meant to be great for babies calorie-wise. And I guess if he has yoghurt you could try cheese too (although too much can be a bit salty) in veggy purees. Or sauteeing the veg in olive oil.

After weeks of eating like a pig, DS lost his appetite, as we've all been a bit unwell. Slowly getting back there now but his addiction to Plum porridge is even worse now! Whinegums - will try Readybrek, thanks. We were the opposite in our house growing up - if it was easy to make, we ate it! So Readybrek was a must (not to mention potato waffles, crispy pancakes, baked beans...ah, the nutritious delicious fare of the 1970s!)

Deanna1977 · 30/03/2009 18:04

Thanks Artifarti. I must confess I am already putting a tiny bit of butter(unsalted) in veg purees. I have bought some avocados today & I'll try them when they are ripe enough. I will give potato with cheese a go tomorrow. Hope your LO feels better soon.

My DH tried giving my DS carrot & potato p today but he (DS not DH!)gagged & threw up that & the yogurt he had just eaten...I guess that's just par for the course.

My DS has a liking for sweet things so I am going to start mixing the sweeter purees with the savoury ones & see how he gets on with that.
