Will post a link on the old thread and be back in a sec.

Deanna - its good to put olive oil in with the steamed veg anyway before you puree them because it means we can absorb the vitamins better or some such...

neenztwinz · 31/03/2009 20:02

Deanna, don't worry too much about his weight, as long as he is not losing weight. Avocadoes and olive oil are all good anyway, but he will probably just start eating bigger portions if he has a bit of catching up to do from being ill. FWIW I put milk in pretty much everything for the calories. How old is your DS?

We had some vomiting from DS this morning (after first BF and then all his porridge too) so thought he might had got this bug everyone's had, but he has not been sick again, and me and DD are OK, so hope it's finished now, whatever it was!

Yesterday I thought I'd make something different, no sweet potato or parsnip (usually everything savoury has to be mixed with sweet potato or parsnip or it gets rejected) so I made veggie risotto (onion, rice, mixed veg and a little tomato) but DD hated it. She had one mouthful and pulled the funniest face (like she had just eaten acid), then spat it all out. DS ate it but he wasn;t too keen. I mixed it with sweet potato and they ate loads! . They are having quite a variety of stuff as well as the parsnip and potato so I am not too worried. DS had chilli, rice and bread BLW-style at my mum's on Sunday (but DD just ignored it). We are still getting a little night waking too after salmon. They had lentils for protein the last two days and slept through .

giantkatestacks · 31/03/2009 20:12

Gosh i didnt realise that there was still a sweet potato thing going on in your house neenz. That must be a right palaver. btw I caught myself looking at some oatibix this morning - do you use the big ones or the small ones - the small ones seemd to have more salt but then dd started yelling and i didnt have time to work it out.

Do they eat it roasted in big chunks? (am referring to the sp and not the oatibix) I would catch them out if so by roasting some normal potato and some butternut squash as well - would they just pick it out?...or I might do a sweet potato dauphinoise...mmm.

The food thing here is done pretty much - dd is eating the same as ds apart from sausages and processed cereal - in fact she eats more as she will eat anything whereas he's refusing things he used to like - plain panfried salmon etc grr

Deanna1977 · 31/03/2009 21:12

Neenz. He is not losing weight but he hasn't put on any (well 8 g) in 3 weeks. As he is under the 0.4th centile I am a little worried. The HV advised us to go to a GP so we did today & she referred DS to a paediatrician. So hopefully we'll get an appointment in a few weeks.

DS is 27 weeks. I am putting cheese, milk etc in purees to get the calories up. Thankfully he has drank his milk really well today & not done too badly on solids (loved apple & carrot mixed together) so fingers crossed he will have put on weight this week. Honestly though the amount of exercise he does (he loves bouncing & standing up) no wonder the poor boy doesn't put on any weight - he burns up the calories as he's a little dynamo!

artifarti · 31/03/2009 21:24

Deanna hopefully as Neenz says he will start to catch up. Just when I started weaning DS he had only put 1oz on in three weeks but a month later it was nearly a pound in that time! Hope you get an appointment with the Paediatrician soon though.

DS, after refusing cheap imposters for a fortnight, wolfed down a giant pot of Rachel's Organic first yoghurts today. What with that and the Plum porridge - just my luck to have a baby with expensive tastes!

neenztwinz · 31/03/2009 21:28

Sorry Deanna, didn't realise he was only 0.4 centile. My two were always low on the charts too but have gone up to 40th centile now. Olive oil and avocadoes and a little cheese is good for him anyway so hopefully it will do the trick.

Yeah we still have a sweet potato/parsnip issue! It doesn't have to be sweet potato, it just has to have that sweet root veg type taste. They will have normal potato too but I usually mix it with parsnip. They are still having mashed food, whenever I put chunks of potato and veg down for them they just ignore it. They do take the spoon off me now to feed themselves though. I just steam a load of potatoes/parsnips/carrots etc, enough, for a few days, and just stick it in the fridge and add it to veg or meat/fish as I go along, so it is not a problem. DS has had lots of our leftovers (chilli, dahl, spag bol etc) but DD won't eat any of that so it is a bit difficult. I am not too worried about it, I am kind of sticking my head in the sand thinking that as they grow up their tastes will change anyway. They do have a wide variety of food, just all mixed with potato and parsnip!

neenztwinz · 31/03/2009 21:29

It's the big Oatibix I use, yes the smaller ones have more salt for some reason. BTW I don't need to mix Oatibix with sweet potato and parsnip

giantkatestacks · 31/03/2009 21:57

lol - I wasnt suggesting you did neenz

In all seriousness though I do think that they get used to what you're giving them and then they expect it to be always like that iyswim and its harder to change toddlers eating habits than babies...

I have created a number of stupid food associations with my dd that I now need to get rid of - I only started them cos they made my life easier but they have now got a bit out of control - I didnt do anything like that with my pfb ds...

neenztwinz · 31/03/2009 22:33

I don't really mind, as long as they eat something and its healthy. I only ate vegemite and orange juice when I was a toddler and I survived. Anything for an easy life!

giantkatestacks · 31/03/2009 22:43

wow neenz - what did you spread it on? Or did you eat it with a spoon like Brad Pitt in Meet Joe Black?

neenztwinz · 31/03/2009 22:48

No I think I ate bread too

giantkatestacks · 31/03/2009 22:50

Thats ruined my mental image - if you dont mind an going to continue thinking that you did not in fact eat bread....

potatoes · 01/04/2009 09:58

Maria I hope you're having a lovely holiday, i love Greece (especially the food!). Hope your DS is tucking into everything over there!

Have not been on here for ages, DS was poorly/teething (still not entirely sure which!) so spent most of last week sobbing and not sleeping. Conveniently DH was away until Monday by which time DS was back to his normal cheery self and DH can't understand why I was so knackered and stressed and the house looked like a pigsty!

DS now eating brilliantly, even chomped on cheese, cucumber, pasta and pepper yesterday - up 'til now all finger food has been flung on the floor. Might try roasted chunks of sweet potato for lunch.

mookickkick · 01/04/2009 10:07

Hello everyone! Have my day off today and dd is sleeping away. Monday she slept all of 30 min at the nursery and Tuesday a whole hour. The good thing is that she eats everything there: purees plus pasta, risotto, toast... Not mashed or anything. She wasn't her hungry self last week because of teething but seems ok again. At least, I am giving her more store-bought stuff and she wolfs it all down. Bit hit and miss with the formula though, but I still bf mornings and evenings (and nights, sigh).

Potatoes - I hear you. DH went away for 4 days and I was a zombie by the time he returned, having missed a cold/teething nightmare.

Maria2007 · 01/04/2009 18:58

Hi girls from Greece!

Hope you're all well. Am now a bit anxious with the whole oatibix / salt discussion because I often give oatibix to DS for breakfast (following Neenz's example ) & I didn't realize it has salt!! Not sure if the ones I use are the big ones or small ones? In any case what's done is done...

Here in Greece things are going slightly better with the sleep; that's because my mum looked after DS for 3 nights & she managed to keep him in his cot (in another room from her) so on the 4th night that DP & I returned he was (miraculously) used to his cot, & woke only 3 times during the night (at 10.20, at 1.30 & at 5.00). Not TOO bad. (But still bad).

Hope you're all doing ok.
Ah, by the way, following from what Neenz was saying about food preferences, for DS the absolute best food in the world is greek yoghurt! He eats it plain, or with fresh fruit, or with pasta, or with anything! When he sees it in the horizon he screeches with joy

artifarti · 02/04/2009 10:07

DS has regained his appetite again and is wolfing once more. He is also displaying alarming tendencies towards wanting to be a BLW baby, such as only eating chicken mash with his fingers. So if I disappear off this thread never to be seen again, you'll know where I am...

Am thinking about introducing pasta and rice at some point soon. Presumably I need to try egg before pasta, unless it's egg-free? I confess that a sleep-deprived mist came over me in the supermarket a few days ago and I bought a packet of AK silly little pasta shapes but what proper pasta is good? He is only just getting to grips with lumps at the moment so don't want to freak him out.

giantkatestacks · 02/04/2009 10:44

artifarti - mine is actually best with spaghetti...but we do do macaroni cheese as well. Rice is really easy and she loves it - either spooned in or clagged togetehr into balls with cheese or casserole iyswim.

Most dried pasta is fine for egg - mine reacts to egg and doesnt to pasta at all...

artifarti · 02/04/2009 13:28

Thanks!

Oh - and Whinegums - care to share your rice pud recipe? Sounds lovely...

Deanna1977 · 02/04/2009 17:14

Hi fellow weaners. (shall I rephrase that?!)

DS has been to Baby Clinic today & has put on weight. HV said it was 15g in a week but really it is 150g (silly HV) so that's good news. He is moving up but is still under the 0.4th centile. So I've just got to keep going with what I am doing. He has eaten really well today solid wise. He loves Rachel's yogurt too artifarti - I did try him on the Greek Yogurt but he wasn't having it. Today he wolfed down a pot of strawberrry yogurt, apple puree (lots of - well about 3 ice cubes), butternut squash, carrot & lentil stew (which I made today). Milk wise I think he is dropping feeds.

giantkatestacks · 02/04/2009 18:45

Thats sounds good Deanna - they often get a bit overenthusiatic at first and cut right back on the milk - by the sounds of it you need to get that in as well though dont you as its more calorific than a lot of the food...

Was there any reaction to the lentils? good if not - I imagine the protein will really help.

artifarti · 02/04/2009 19:30

Good news Deanna

mookickkick · 02/04/2009 19:46

Bet you're relieved Deanna! Do try Greek yoghurt in a few days or weeks. DD ate the Yeo Valley stuff plain but then I added some pears cause she was constipated yesterday (very disturbed night). Fortunately she had 3 poos at nursery today

Maria - that's progress! Now that he's used to his own cot things will get better. Btw what's your fave brand of Greek yoghurt here in the UK?

Kate - how much milk is your dd drinking in the afternoon? Mine has refused her bottle and will only drink formula from her doidy now (I got her a red one as the blue one is for water), and the amount varies from 2-6oz.

giantkatestacks · 02/04/2009 20:34

moo - she has about hmm well imagine a tommy tippee sippy cup - the 4 month one without valve...I fill that up to about 3/4s. I imagine its about 3-4ozs. But she wont drink it all at once so she has it over the course of the school run - probably about an hour, and she tips lots of it down herself so maybe she has about 2ozs come to think of it.

In our house milk is the blue cup - wouldnt the dcs be all confused if we met up

whinegums · 02/04/2009 21:24

Artifarti - preheat oven to Gas 2 (not sure what that is in C!) Liberally grease a 1.5 ltr oven proof dish (fairly shallow) with butter - about 1/2oz. Mix together 2oz pudding rice, and 1 oz sugar, add to dish, and stir in 1tsp vanilla extract and 1 pint full cream milk. I add cinnamon here, you can add nutmeg/sultanas if you like. Bake in oven for about 2 - 2 1/2 hours, stirring after first 30 mins, and then another 30 mins after that (or an hour if you don't like skin).

Whinegums: the rice pudding recipe sounds good!

Moo: My favourite greek yoghurt is total fage (the full fat one). Not that there's much of a variety in the UK.

Girls: am interested in your discussion about cutting down on milk feeds. DS has cut right down on his milk feeds so I'm making an extra effort to get more milk in. For his morning milk, he always bfs (around 6 am, and then goes back to sleep), but recently I'm realizing that bf is not nearly enough milk He obviously drinks just enough to go back to sleep. Today I tried- after the very brief bf- giving him an extra bottle of formula & he drank 5 ounces Meaning (as I suspected) that he's not getting nearly enough from me. Then for his afternoon milk he simply refuses to drink any, and all he drinks during the day is very brief 'comfort' bfs before / after naps (when I can fit them in). So, first, I'm concerned that yet again my milk supply is really down (not surprising) and that bf is more of a comfort for DS now & less of a source of nourishment. And second, how can I encourage more milk?
