ouch arti. i slipped on some stairs a month ago and still have a bump on my bum. hope you've been spared that indignity.

kate dd also seems to have a new cold. she'd been eating like a horse since recovering from the last one (just a few days ago) and now she's lost interest again. sigh. as long as your dd doesn't have a temperature the nursery won't mind. pity about the mashed food, though. do they provide finger foods?

deanna if it's teething it shouldn't last much longer (well, until he cuts another tooth). hang in there! i'm sure he'll come back to his favourites.

hope everyone else is getting some sleep!

artifarti · 01/05/2009 09:21

Thanks all, I am fine, just a bit bruised on my, ahem, behind. I was more worried about my cat - if anyone remembers Eric Cantona lauching himself feet-first into the spectators, that's pretty much what I was like at poor cat!

Hope all the babies are okay with teeth and colds. And hope return to work is okay, Kate.

Deanna1977 · 01/05/2009 20:06

arti. I am sure the cat will forgive you. I am forever treading on/kicking mine, who has an awful habit of running between my legs when we are both going down the stairs...

No sign of teeth yet. But he has been very grumpy today & has hardly drunk any milk. (In the region of 450ml.) I think the sucking is bothering him. I tried a cup but that was no better. He has however eaten two yogurts (yeo valley), a fruit pot, 2 ice cubes of pears, a fair portion of porridge (milk counted) & he had a taste of an ice cream . (bad mummy smiley)

bitofadramaqueen · 04/05/2009 14:04

Hi everyone!

Haven't been able to get onto MN for ages... and have exams next week so just a brief appearance. Hope you all getting on well and your babies all doing well with food.

Ds is still eating well, although no great increase in portion size over the last couple of months so he's still sliding down those centiles, but he seems quite happy. He's at nursery now and seems to eat everything they put in front of them.

mookick that chilli recipe looks good, will need to try!

Maria2007 · 04/05/2009 19:24

So... have really lost many episodes in the weaning lives of all you girls. Hope things are going well? Arti that sounds really rubbish with the fall!! Ouch! (both for you & your poor cat).

As for us. We've had major changes sleep wise (namely: we finally took the plunge & ditched the dummy & since then we've been sleeping well). But also we've had major changes food wise. DS is now 9 months. He eats well (I suppose) meaning that he manages, one way or another, to wolf down big quantities. BUT BUT BUT he really prefers eating with his own hands, & only accepts mummy's spoon in his mouth very very reluctantly. So I've been giving him all sorts of finger food on his tray or in his hand, & when he opens his mouth to put whatever it is in (e.g. pitta bread, bagel, mixed veg, whatever) I then craftily shove in the spoon which he grudgingly accepts. Very sly of me I know, but that way he tends to end up eating more. And I feel more secure about the nutritional balance of what he's having.

Here are some things he's had in the last week:

-pasta bolognaise (aubergine mixed with the bolognaise too) Was a success, he ate most with his hands (ooooh, the MESS!)
-cod with steamed broccoli & cheese sauce (from Gina Ford's cookbook) Was really really nice
-potato, leek & courgette soup (very thick, made with milk). Went down well with the tried & tested 'trick-with-finger-food-and-shove-it-in' method
-lamb hotpot (basically, lamb with veggies)

I'm kind of in a rut now & need to cook a few more meals... But I'm also thinking of giving more & more finger foods e.g. little sandwiches etc & phasing out the cooked mashed dishes, or at least decreasing them.

Oh 2 quick questions girls:

  1. can anyone give me a basic baby-friendly rice pudding recipe?
  2. how do you deal with water drinking? My DS seems to think drinking water from his sippy cup (with a spout) is a really fun game. But most of it goes on top of his head or on his clothes. Should I let him play like that or should I guide him a bit? At some point I gave some water with a spoon which worked, but I think giving him the cup to play with & gradually learn is probably better, what do you think?
artifarti · 04/05/2009 20:08

Maria - sounded like you were about to turn to the dark side (BLW-ing! ) for a moment there but then I read the bit about craftily shoving the spoon in!

Whinegums' rice pudd recipe is THE BEST:
"Preheat oven to Gas 2 (not sure what that is in C!) Liberally grease a 1.5 ltr oven proof dish (fairly shallow) with butter - about 1/2oz. Mix together 2oz pudding rice, and 1 oz sugar, add to dish, and stir in 1tsp vanilla extract and 1 pint full cream milk. I add cinnamon here, you can add nutmeg/sultanas if you like. Bake in oven for about 2 - 2 1/2 hours, stirring after first 30 mins, and then another 30 mins after that (or an hour if you don't like skin)."

But beware - not much of it ends up going DS's way IME.

DS here also thinks the cup is the best game ever. In particular sliding it across his tray on its side, backward and forward, at high speed. I mostly let him get on with it and then try and guide a bit in at some point. He usually has a bit of a gulp from it so is learning what it's really for.

bitofadramaqueen · 04/05/2009 20:22

Whinegums (or anyone who's made it...) what kind of consistency should the rice pudding be when it's been done in the oven? I made some recently and I thought it was still a bit runny, so popped it back in for a bit and then it was really dry and yukky. Can you freeze it?

Re: the cup... I still guide my DS with the cup a bit Maria (he's 10 months now) alhtough though I do let him play with it a bit too. He has a doidy cup as well as a tommee tippee hard spout cup, but I never let him have free reign with the doidy cup .

artifarti · 04/05/2009 20:29

Bitofa - I followed Whinegums to the letter and it came out quite thick and gloopy (yum!) I ate all the skin off it immediately freeze it in little pots - as long as you nuke it before serving it, it should be fine.

Maria2007 · 04/05/2009 21:14

Yum! the rice pudding sounds delicious. Thanks for posting the recipe Arti (and thanks for posting the recipe originally Whinegums)

BDQ- LOL about letting free reign with the doiddy cup! Maybe in the summer, in the garden, with no clothes on?

BTW girls: any good cups with a spout you recommend? is the tommy tippee one good?

Supper here was a bit of a disastrous affair. I made myself a cup of tea; I also made a cup of tea for a friend of mine who was visiting. We happily went inside, to the living room, leaving DP to feed DS. I had defrosted prepared courgette, leek & potato soup & I also told DP to use bread & cream cheese as the finger-food-temptation-which-leads-mouth-to-open. 5 mins later (5!! not even 10!) DP comes into the living room huffing & puffing & tells me 'Maria, YOU feed him! I REFUSE'. So in to the kitchen go me & my friend, with our cups of tea, & of course with my sly & crafty method of spoon-shoving & finger-food-offering I managed to get DS to finish off all his meal. DP then said he refuses to accept that this level of mess will be our lives from now on, and that I should just offer food off a spoon & if DS doesn't want it, he doesn't want it () When I tried to explain that this is what happens with 9 month olds, they prefer finger food & want to feed themselves etc, he accused me, again huffing & puffing, of doing 'TFL' & not telling him that's what I'm doing! . After questioning him a bit, I realized he meant BLW .

Maria2007 · 04/05/2009 21:15

Oh, here's another little tidbit: DP also said 'I refuse to do TFL, lets just do old fashioned spoon feeding!'

???!!!!

artifarti · 05/05/2009 11:09

"Doing TFL" hahahaha!

My DP is utterly anal a bit fussy about mess and said that if I did BLW, he would have to leave us. I have to warn him if there's finger food in the offing, as he can't bear to watch the ensuing spectacle of DS smearing/crushing/fingering/chucking food all over himself/his highchair/the kitchen. I can see him getting visibly stressed and as soon as we're done, he's there with a cloth and spray, clearing it all up. Good job, though, really as I'm a total slattern less bothered.

DS has been refusing food for a couple of days as he has a bug. Seems to be back on demanding form now (now that he's given the bug to DP and I.)

artifarti · 05/05/2009 11:58

Oh - and we use the Tommee Tippee First Cup here, as DS won't entertain anything he has to suck properly from.

Deanna1977 · 05/05/2009 17:45

Hi all! Hope you all had a good bank holiday.
Maria. Sounds as if your husband is like mine & does "you are much better than me" appraoach when it comes to feeding DS solids. They just don't have the patience...
LOL at "TFL"!

Really want to try whinegums recipe for rice pudding. I love Rachel's organic rp (so does DS!).

artifarti. Sorry to hear that you & DS have (had) a bug Hope you are all better soon.

We are in teething hell at the moment. Well it seems to come in waves. Last Saturday was pure hell - I have never seen him so grumpy. He is still down on food & has a very upset tummy. When will it end!!

We use the Tommee Tippee first cup too. He's getting the hang of it quite well.

potatoes · 05/05/2009 20:52

Hi everyone! I'm back, and have given up on purees at lunchtime and we are now doing only finger food as DS would not open his mouth for a spoon at lunchtime and wants to feed himself - a step towards 'TFL' maybe?! Not sure he gets a lot in his tummy, food mostly goes in his hair/clothes/eyebrows/on me/the floor, but he seems to enjoy flinging food around and eating the odd mouthful and has a proper spoon-fed breakfast and tea so i know he's not going hungry. In the last few days he's tried spaghetti, cheese on toast, melon, veggie sausage, tuna, hash brown, chicken, tomato, naan bread...
Re. water- DS seems to manage better without the lid on his cup, and is knocking back a fair bit now, bit messy though (especially when he shook his cup with excitement when my dad was holding him! )
Sorry to hear about teething/poorly babies, hope things are settling down now.

anjlix · 25/05/2009 13:00

Ooh a non BLW thread I have 6 mos old twins and I think spoon feeding puree is the way to start. They are ready for weaning and made faces when I fed them my home made apple and pear puree. To think I slaved in the kitchen peeling all day . Must admit they were a bit tart. Looking for ideas and support.

artifarti · 25/05/2009 13:22

Hi anjlix. Twins!! Wow, congratulations - you must be busy.

It's a bit quiet on here these days but I think people look back in from time to time; I found it very useful when we were weaning. My DS is 9 months now and guzzles everything in sight! But I remember well endless sessions trying to get him to eat a spoonful of carrot. Pear was always a favourite here. And sweet potato usually a winner. Of course, it's always the food you spend the most time preparing that the little buggers darlings turn their noses up at!
