Maria, good luck with the flight. Glad we like camping, no flights to deal with. We are taking our first camping trip next week if the weather holds up - could pose a bit of a problem re food but it will be interesting at least. DS had a good go at BBQ food today at PILs, he had burger, sausage and new potatoes, so he will be easy to feed on holiday, but DD was not interested, so may have to take a few pouches/jars etc.

I have given up trying to make exciting meals for my two cos they just don't eat them, so I am just going back to what we do best and that is mixing everything with potato, parsnip, swede, butternut squash etc!

They must have been off-colour last week cos they were eating so badly, I was chucking so much away, but now they are eating loads again .

giantkatestacks · 14/04/2009 08:44

Just getting this back on my threads again - Maria hope you had a fab holiday...just another week at home for us then Longleat CP next week - woo hoo...

artifarti · 14/04/2009 11:41

Hello all - hope you coped with the flight okay Maria

DS is 7.5 months and eats like a horse. This is what he gets through in an average day but sometimes (often) I get the feeling he could put more away. Does it sound about right, experienced puree-weaners?

Breakfast: 3 big tablespoons of fruity porridge

Lunch: 4 oz Pot of protein-based casserole type thing, then a yoghurt (adult-sized) then as much banana as he wants

Supper: 4 oz Pot of Carb-based thing then half a weetabix with milk and fruit (about 3 tbsps)

4 BFs a day (and one at 4am )

When did you start dropping the morning BF? He is more and more disinterested in BFing generally so don't want to stuff too much food down him but sometimes he just keeps barking at me!

giantkatestacks · 14/04/2009 17:00

I have only just dropped down to 3 bfs arti - and the one that I've dropped is the midafternoon as thats when shes most amenable to taking some milk out of a cup and we're out and about etc so it makes more sense.

My dd went through a phase around then of not being interested in milk but now shes seems to have really taken to it again btw.

neenztwinz · 14/04/2009 22:09

artifarti, that does seem like a decent amount but maybe not quite as much as mine were eating, but they were eating a lot. What's his weight gain like? Mine were putting on about a pound a month at that age, but had a bit of catching up to do what with being low birthweight then exclusively BF'd.

Just offer him more if he looks like he is interested, especially if he is looking for milk at 4am. At 8mo I stopped night feeds but I was BFing them 5 times in the day. I did start night feeds again when they were ill but then at about 10mo I stopped night feeds again for good. Just last month (10mo) I dropped down to 3 BFs a day (first thing, after lunch and before bed).

artifarti · 15/04/2009 07:27

Thanks, Kate and Neenz, I'll try upping it a bit and see if he's interested. He's averaging about 12 oz per month. I can't get him to take 5 BFs a day but will definitely stick at 4 for now.

BTW Neenz, he slept through for the first time last night - guess what he had had for supper for the first time ever...OATIBIX!

mookickkick · 15/04/2009 13:28

wow, artifarti, he slept through! sounds like a champion eater.

dd is still mainly into yoghurts but she did surprise us by eating her tuna pasta last night. i don't want to worry about her diet because i know she's poorly but she isn't even interested in her formula feeds during the day

Deanna1977 · 16/04/2009 20:51

Fantastic news artifarti about DS sleeping through the night. You get some rest!

My LO is putting on weight slowly but surely. 70g last week & 130g this weeks. So not bad at all -hope he can keep it up. Solids are as usual very hit & miss. Some days he will chomp through 3 meals & others not. He loves avocado, pear, apple, potato lentils & funnily enough brocilli. I made some pork casserole today do hopefully that will go down well tomorrow. Not much luck with finger foods but I guess its early days. He's 7 months next week.

He is taking roughly 720-800ml of milk a day (although last Friday he went bonkers & had close to 1000), as well as solids (about 4-10 tsps per meal). He's dropped the 11 feed but makes up for it in the day.

He is sleeping OK - he has gone 7-7 a few times (only moved him to his own room/cot last week as he was still in his moses basket). But he's pretty random - this morning I was up at 2,(although I was very restless myself - having nightmares about zombies..!)

Mookickkick - Speaking of yogurts - the Yeo valley "baby" yogurts are 1/2 price at Sains, if that's any good for anyone!

mookickkick · 17/04/2009 19:55

Deanna - thanks, must get myself to Sainsburys! After a week of I don't know how many yogs a day, she wolfed a cube (my cubes are 60 ml) of beef chilli this evening. If anyone is interested, here is the recipe, which dh also adores. It's not authentic as it's packed with veg though: soften one onion (diced) in oil, add 400-500 g lean beef mince and squoosh it around, when mostly cooked toss in a tin of chopped tomatoes and a clove or two of garlic (crushed), then add some kidney beans that have been soaking overnight (with a change of water). Add some cumin, paprika and sweet chilli powder and let it simmer for 1-1/2 hours, stirring occasionally. Meanwhile cut a few carrots into little cubes, courgettes, broccoli - whatever. Add these and a tin of sweetcorn and cook until softened. That's it. For dd, I use a hand blender and for us, I add more of the same spices. And salt and pepper!

Have a great weekend everyone!

artifarti · 18/04/2009 20:24

Great recipe mookickkick - we are about to embark on the world of beef so will keep this one in mind. We eat lots of spicy food so DS had better get used to it! Is your DD any better BTW?

How did the pork go down Deanna? We're having roast pork tonight (yum!) but I always think of it as not very easy to digest so did wonder about babies. Maybe I could mince up some of the left overs for DS lunch tomorrow. (Although as he is sleeping quite well at the mo I am terrified of deviating from his diet...)

Deanna1977 · 19/04/2009 17:28

Hi Artifarti. The pork didn't go down well the other day (one mouthfull) but it went down today! At first he didn't have it & was making faces/growling but I used the trick of giving him 1/2 an avocado & then giving him the pork. It worked & it was all eaten! No issues with digestion yet....

How did the beef go?

artifarti · 20/04/2009 09:28

Deanna - haven't quite got round to the beef yet. [lazy mum emoticon] His teeth have reached quite a peak and so he is refusing to eat anything that's not his favourite at the moment! The pork was quite chewy so spared him that but I'm got some slow-cooked Greek lamb planned for later in the week, which falls off the bone, so might try him on that instead if he's being less fussy then.

Deanna1977 · 21/04/2009 21:00

Hi there artifarti. Pork went down well, (no digestive issues!) although it is very pureed so he didn't have to chew. I am trying to get through the purees in my freezer & then get onto the next mashed up stage. He will take mashed banana, avocado but other lumps are not appreciated.

artifarti · 21/04/2009 21:03

We had a big success with tinned tuna today - cooked up with sweet potato, sweetcorn and red onion. DS did his "shake and shout" at it, which is usually only reserved for Plum porridge, over-priced yoghurt and Whinegum's rice pudding!

notcitrus · 23/04/2009 12:36

arti I've got a enthusiastic eater like yours and was wondering how to fit in another solid meal with bf. When do you do your 4 bfs and meals?

I think I'm confused because I'm sure I was told once a baby ate a decent meal, not to give milk at the same time, but if I did that and then offered lunch as well as breakfast and tea, I wouldn't be bfing for 10 hours which would mean leakage everywhere and doesn't sound good for supply either.

A loves raost pork - it's his favourite finger food. Although on the weekend MIL gave him a quarter of a pork pie when I wasn't looking and he somehow got the whole thing stuck in his mouth and got quite distressed until I hoiked it out...

artifarti · 23/04/2009 14:04

notcitrus - it generally goes something like this (assuming he wakes up at 6, which I wish I could assume...)

6.30 BF
7.30 Porridge
Nap
10.30 BF
12.00 Lunch
Nap
4.00 BF
5.15 Supper
6.45 Bedtime BF

Just dropped the night-time feeds last week, which my breasts are just about recovering from...

It's all a bit of a moveable feast though, depending on what we're up to. And increasingly he's not very interested in BFing, which I was fretting about but the HV says not to worry as he's clearly thriving so just keep offering and he'll take what he needs.

Greek lamb is a success! (mashed and mixed with sweet potato)

giantkatestacks · 24/04/2009 18:23

hi there everyone - just back from hols and have lost this thread completely - eek...

we were on the same schedule as artifarti until quite recently tho the afternoon bf was much earlier (around 2.30) - now its cows milk which sometimes dd takes and sometimes she doesnt...which is less than useful for nursery next week...

notcitrus · 24/04/2009 19:01

Thanks arti hm... think I might have to get up earlier to get another meal in! A won't bf if he isn't hungry so I've tended to do:
6-7am BF, both go back to bed
9am A wakes up and wants to play, so we get up, I have breakfast, then he does round 10am
12 noon nap
1pm BF
4-5 nap
5pm dinner
7pm BF

Then BF sometime in the night, usually once late evening, and now once early morning. Maybe squeezing more BF in the day? I'm so used to feeding on demand that having to plan is a bit novel, but I've going to have to get used to getting up round 7.30 when going to work/nursery...

mookickkick · 25/04/2009 19:19

notcitrus - how about offering solids after the noon nap and then a bf around 2:30/3pm? that way you wouldn't have to disturb his sleep pattern to introduce another meal. then once you start nursery you can move lunch to before the nap. or something!

kate - good luck with work. dd drinks more milk at nursery than at home, so i hope it'll be the same for you. how did the holiday go? any interesting new foods for your dd?

wave to everyone else! dd had some guacamole today and loved it. raw onions i wouldn't let her have much as it was salted.

notcitrus · 25/04/2009 22:02

moo last 2 days A has woken to play 2 hours earlier - tried to squeeze in more bf today to help his night sleep. We shall see...

Deanna1977 · 28/04/2009 20:59

Waves to everyone!

Having trouble at the moment. DS is being very fussy & food that has gone down well in the past (avocado, broccilli & banana) is greeted with clamped mouth &/or crying. The only food that he wants seems to be yogurt, fruit puree & porridge. If I do "fool" him into taking some other food he cries & spits it out. Please let this be a phase! (I am sure he is teething so that could be a factor).

artifarti · 28/04/2009 22:02

Waves back!

It does sound like teething - are yoghurt, fruit and porridge his favourites? I think they especially like cold things when teething so that might be why the yogs are always a winner when everything else is rejected. I guess you could even try making sure other things are cold too although he might not be fooled by that! Remember - everything with babies is a phase - this too shall pass. [Arti hopes that eating soil out of plantpots is also a phase and not a new stage of weaning...]

artifarti · 29/04/2009 06:53

Deanna - if it's any consolation, we've already had teeth-related fun here and it's not even 7 yet [bleary-eyed emoticon]

DS woke up red-cheeked and screaming at 5.20, I went to see to him, fell down a small flight of stairs and nearly killed the cat in the process! I now have a grumpy baby, a disgruntled moggy and a bruised derriere. Do you ever get that feeling that it's going to be a very long day?.....

giantkatestacks · 29/04/2009 08:57

arti- that sounds rubbish.

Today is my first day back at work (albeit at home) and so am ahem MNing obviously .

My dd loves to eat earth as well - maybe we should put in jars and market it as a new weaning superfood - like quinoa...

We also have yet another cold which is obviously great for the first full day at nursery tomorrow tsk.

No new food things I dont think though - at dds settling in session at nursery yesterday she had chicken curry though they insisted on mashing it as they said they wouldnt feed her normal portions even though thats what she has at home. Oh and they cant provide plain yoghurt either so its little stars or fruit instead. Evil mummy that I am I plumped for fruit.

Deanna1977 · 29/04/2009 19:21

Oh arti hope you are OK now. Sounds painful! I am sure dirt is very nutritious. Everything is a phase...that's my motto anyway!

Kate Hope work is going well. And you are not an evil mummy!

I am sure it is teething. For the last two nights he has woken up screaming at around 9pm (please not tonight during Apprentice!) He normally goes straight through 7pm-6am. The first night I managed to settle him but last night was horrendous & after 2 hours we decided to put him in bed with us(& the cat...it was crowded).

Yogurt & fruit are definite past favouries (porridge less so). Avocado was a firm favourite - I can't understand why he has gone off it. Maybe its the texture that is annoying to his gums...

Today was better. He had a good breakfast of porridge & peach puree, for lunch he had a few mouthfuls of fish bake (cold) that I made yesterday & 1/2 a yogurt. He had a good tea of another yogurt & pea, potato & sweet potato (warm). Milk is down but I can't force him to drink if he doesn't want it.

Take care everyone..
