Dd is 26 weeks old and the fun will begin on Saturday!

I am going to puree to start with and see how we get on.

Anyone else starting this weekend?

Yay.. my DD is 26 weeks on Sat so we start then too! I'm giving BLW a go and plan to give DD a banana for her breakfast

Its exciting isn't it? I think DD will certainly enjoy the mess.

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 04/12/2008 22:00

Hi Darkmere, I considered BLW but decided to start with puree. Will be good to here how you get on as I may combine the two.

I cant wait - Its mad to think on Saturday dd will have her first food. If shes anything like me she will love it

Darkmere · 04/12/2008 22:09

I was in two minds too but BLW sounds worth ago (and definitely appealed to my lazy side!)

I hope I am not setting myself up for a fall but I think my DD will love it too! She has just been so fascinated by our eating for the last few weeks and made a few attempts to grab anything going.

Yes lets catch up again on here again, would love to know how you are getting on too.

Ps- want to know something spooky? My name is Laura too!

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 05/12/2008 10:20

That is weird! I am glad someone else is starting at the same time!

What food is going to be your dd's first?

I think I will start with baby rice and maybe give her some finger foods in a week or so.

I am hoping she gets on ok so that she can some bits of our Christmas dinner mushed up!

Ooooh - me! My DD is 26 weeks and I'm thinking about getting started. Actually, she's already had some apple, tangerine and toast which she's snatched out of my hands in the past two weeks and munched on, so you could say she's begun to wean herself. I'm going to try BLW too. Should be fun!

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 05/12/2008 10:27

Brilliant! Bless her for stealing your food! Dd nearly helped herself to some cheesecake a few weeks ago.

Its going to be great to see how you get on with BLW. If its really good maybe I will just give purees for breakfast and finger foods for lunch and dinner.

OP posts:
Penthesileia · 05/12/2008 10:36

Oh god - it was too gorgeous. Her little face as she gnawed gummily on the apple was just a picture. And when I tried to take it away from her -- ooooh, the protest and show of strength when she refused to let go.

The tangerine she was less sure of - she couldn't get through the papery skin bit (you know, over the flesh - don't know what it's called - not pith...), but she sucked the juice out, all the while making this hilarious - "oooh, it's quite sour!" face. Didn't stop her though.

Darkmere · 05/12/2008 11:33

All I have planned so far is banana for breakfast. I think we will roast some vegetables for her to have for her main meals for a little while until we are brave enough to just let her have ago and whatever we are eating.

I had a little Christmas party for her and her friends who are all a month or so older than her. The mess after feeding time was just insane and has prepared me for the worst!

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 05/12/2008 12:25

Im not looking forward to the mess!

I cant wait until she pulls faces as she eats! I cant wait

Dd is 26 weeks on Sun, we're starting tomorrow too! So exciting, can't wait to see her face. Baby rice tomorrow then think I'll try a mixture of puree & finger food. Hope she likes it, I'm quite looking forward to mashed veges for lunch myself!

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 05/12/2008 19:30

Brilliant one more to join the fun

I have the baby rice ready, the bowls and spoons washed and the cameras charged!

A question - Are you going to sterilise the bowls and spoons? I think I will for a little while but Im sure I have read that you dont have to from 6 months.

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 05/12/2008 19:40

you don't ever have to sterilise bowls or spoons

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 05/12/2008 19:43

Brilliant - Thanks MrsBadger that makes life a bit easier!

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 06/12/2008 13:08

Dd had 11 spoonfulls of baby rice and loved it

How is everyone else doing?

Tomorrow I am going to give her some veg pureed and then next weekend some roasted veg finger foods. Would love to know how the BLW has been x

Hi Laura Glad little Loola enjoyed it. It's a big day for them isn't it?

Well it went pretty well here, though not sure much was actually consumed.

She started with banana but I think it was over ripe and just kept squishing it in her hands. So we made some toast and smeared it with banana which was a bit more successful.

Have just had some lunch with her. Was all geared to do roasted veg batons for her but I made the mistake of telling my mum. She is a bit about BLW and sounded horrified at me giving her so many new tastes in one day. She isn't at all controlling normally but has had 6 DC so finds it hard to resist saying how she did it.

Anyway she scared me so I just gave DD a rice cake which seemed suitably bland enough to not worry my mum! She gagged a little with it, but nothing too dramatic. Again I don't think very much was actually eaten!

My nerves can't take much more so think we have finished solids for today. Trying to decide what to try for breakfast tomorrow!

x

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 06/12/2008 16:09

Brilliant! Sounds like a good start!

Im going to try some pureed veg tomorrow to see what happens then in a week or so I will give her some as finger food.

How messy was it?!

OP posts:
Darkmere · 06/12/2008 17:37

Considering it was only a bit of banana and a couple of toast soldiers it was still pretty bad! The cat (who will eat anything) thought Christmas had come early.

Penthesileia · 06/12/2008 19:57

T'was carnage round our way!

A wee bit of toast for breakfast, then biscuit with a bit of cheddar cheese for lunch were relatively mess-free.

But dinner (avocado, pear, and the piece de resistance - shepherd's pie) was a bombsite! The avocado was the greatest success, though she enjoyed a couple of fistfuls of pie when she figured out that if she dipped her hand in it then sucked her fingers she'd get a nice mouthful.

Poor daddy was left to clear up as I took her up to wash and get ready for bed.

Very little of all this food actually went down, I would guess. But the BLW philosophy seems to be to let them go along at their own pace and experience it all. She'll get the hang of it eventually!

Banana tomorrow, I think!

Penthesileia · 06/12/2008 19:58

Sorry - meant to say...

Glad your little ones enjoyed their food!

kalo12 · 06/12/2008 20:02

Benefit of hindsight coming up!!!!!

I did weaning all wrong - I thought it would be pretty easy as all my friends babies seemed to just opened their mouths for food, so i didn't get prepared and all clued up.

disaster, do it really carefully and slowly, don't introduce anything allegenic, don't be in a hurry to mix flavours and don't worry if they don't eat, my ten month old has only just started eating his solids properly this week cos I think i put him off in the early days trying too many new things too soon ,and now he is allergic / sensitive to some and we are on total crank diet and still bf-ing all the bloody time.

I reccomend the book 'what should i feed my baby' by suzannah olivier wish I had had it earlier.

Penthesileia · 06/12/2008 21:00

Hi kalo12 - thanks for your advice! I will definitely look at that book.

I'm hoping that by doing BLW, we'll avoid some of the problems you mention (fingers crossed). The anecdotal evidence from babies feeding themselves, rather than being fed, suggests they progress at their own pace and refuse foods that are wrong for them. I hope (again fingers crossed) to bf as my DD's main nutrition til 1yo.

It's a minefield though, isn't it?

kalo12 · 06/12/2008 21:32

yes it is. i wanted to just do blw but there were quite a few choking incidents which panicked me alot. i'm sure its all normal but my hv showed me how to dislodge food and stop choking so that made me more confident. rice cakes were the worst culprits, i'd leave them till at least 7.5 months.

also bf babies take longer to get into weaning cos they still have strong tongue thrust

antilop high chair from ikea is definateley the best one.
and i read that tripp trapp high chairs are dangerous cos some babies are boisterous and when they get to about 9 months they rock and reel about so much that they can flip it back or kick off from the table

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 06/12/2008 21:48

Thanks Kalo! Good advice.

Glad everyone got on ok. I have just pureed carrots and sweet potatoe to put in the freezer. Im going to try some carrot tomorrow to see what dd thinks!

I have a Graco Contempo highchair and its great. Dd is very happy just sitting in it watching us do day to day things!

What is everyone else trying tomorrow?

OP posts:
Darkmere · 06/12/2008 22:27

Think we will be trying toast again in the morning and some carrots for lunch.

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 06/12/2008 22:50

I might give dd some toast. I am quite worried about her choking though. Did anyones lo choke today with BLW?? Do you just pat their backs hard?
