Dd is 26 weeks old and the fun will begin on Saturday!

I am going to puree to start with and see how we get on.

Anyone else starting this weekend?

No, no choking. She gagged a couple of times, and spat food out (gagging is normal).

I did a first aid course, though, a couple of months ago (dealt with cpr, choking and drowning risk for babies) to make myself confident in following BLW.

BTW: if your baby does choke - really choke, rather than gag, ie. starts struggling to breath, lips going blue, then you need to:

hold the baby upside down along your arm, if necessary using your leg as a support (so that your baby's head/chin is in the V of your hand & thumb and their body is along your arm); hit them on their back really quite hard - a strong glancing blow between the shoulders.

DO NOT THEN LIFT YOUR BABY TO VERTICAL - there is a risk the item could become lodged again.

Instead, hold your baby horizontally, and slightly forward. Chances are the object will have come into the mouth, and by holding your baby like this, they will automatically push the blockage out themselves.

Resist the temptation to stick your finger in as you may inadvertently push it back down again.

Illustrations here.

Same here.. a bit of gagging but no choking.

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 07/12/2008 17:42

Carrot today - She wasnt sure to start with but nearly finished it! Sweet potato tomorrow x

How did everyone get on today?

OP posts:
Darkmere · 07/12/2008 18:34

Good. Banana on toast for breakfast, avocado and rice cakes for lunch and a few segments of a tangerine a couple of hours ago. Similar to yesterday it was mainly smeared about and played with but some definitely went in. She really enjoyed the tangerine!

We unashamedly inspected her nappy this morning to see if the contents looked any different- it didn't!

Darkmere · 08/12/2008 08:49

DD has just had weetabix for breakfast and appeared to love it as much as her mum does! I just put one on her highchair tray and poured on enough milk to make it smooth but not runny. She smeared and squished it everywhere but also I ate around half of it I reckon.

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 08/12/2008 16:25

Oh my God that must have been messy!!

Dd had baby rice for tea last night but was sick at midnight and up for hours - Going to stick to one meal a day for now.

Today she has had more carrot and loved it!

Maybe sweet potato tomorrow.

We had an orange nappy this morning

Darkmere · 08/12/2008 21:04

It wasn't too bad. I cleaned it up straight away before it had a chance to go too hard.

After the success of breakfast she didn't eat much else today. I think her tongue thrust reflex is still quite strong as most of the bits that eventually make it into her mouth get pushed straight back out.

Hope little Loola has a better night tonight. x

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 08/12/2008 21:07

Me too! Her 2nd tooth is cutting through and she has been a nightmare today! She had more baby rice for tea and really enjoyed it so the one meal a day went out the window!

Its great seeing her enjoy food and its amazing that her little mouth opens and knows what to do - Can you tell she is PFB

OP posts:
Darkmere · 08/12/2008 21:19

PFB here too! And I know what you mean- when she was wolfing down her weetabix this morning it was amazing to watch.

We have taken a squillion pictures already!

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 08/12/2008 21:22

So have we! And videos, poor girl cant do anything without a camera there

Darkmere · 09/12/2008 17:07

EEk! We ate out today! We went to Wagamamas and they have those baby chairs that clip to the table. It was lovely DD played around with ate some tangerines segments and rice cakes while we all ate. I tried her with some actual rice but she didn't come close to being able to pick it up... will take a bit longer for those fine motor skills to develop

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 10/12/2008 17:33

You are brave going out - Well done!

Dd is getting on ok. She had brocolli and potato and wasnt sure so will give it another go tomorrow. She is still having baby rice for tea so may change that tomorrow.

I may attempt some toast for her at the weekend.

Have you had any choking yet?

OP posts:
Darkmere · 10/12/2008 18:25

No choking but really horrible gagging this morning. It really upset me this time so I feel like it has been a bit of a setback as I have just BF today. Plus she hasn't had a dirty nappy since Monday so I'm worried about her getting bunged up.

After yesterday's high I'm not so confident today but I will try and start afresh tomorrow.

FWIW DD hasn't gagged with toast she just enjoys sucking it!

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 11/12/2008 09:06

That is what puts me off of BLW I think but I guess you get used to it.

Dd has been very bunged up since we started. She has had a few poos but seems to arch her back and cry a lot and I think its her stomach. Im hoping a few days her body will be used to it.

Thanks for that, I may give toast a go. Do you give white or brown bread??

OP posts:
Darkmere · 13/12/2008 15:37

Hi Laura How is it going for you? Have you tried any toast? Sorry I haven't replied sooner. We used brown bread just because it is what we have.

Thankfully there have been no more nasty gagging moments since the other day... though the way she rams food into her mouth I'm certain there is more to come!

We have had another meal out. This time she made a right mess but it is a cafe I have been going to since DD was a newborn so the staff there know her well and didn't seem to mind too much.

x

Defeatedbypoppers · 14/12/2008 11:41

Hi guys, sounds as if you're getting on well. We went fine for the first few days but since Friday dd has been clamping her mouth shut at the sight of a spoon and refusing to eat anything! We gave her a bit of toast yesterday which she sucked on but today she showed no interest and just dropped it on the floor. Spose it's just a matter of persistence and continuing to offer food at the usual times... But having waited till 26 weeks I feel a bit of pressure to get off to a quick start, especially since the HV at the weaning group I went to last week said they should be on 3 meals a day by 7-8 months and cutting back on their milk quite a bit by then. If we continue like this I'll be breastfeeding her exclusively forever! BTW dd has definitely been bunged up this week too, she's always been v windy but this takes it to a new level, she seems to be having a major struggle getting it all through her little tummy.

Darkmere · 14/12/2008 18:40

Hi Defeated

My friend's DD went right off food after they had been giving her solids for a few days because she was very constipated. Once she went she started to eat again.

Thankfully my DD has been pretty regular! I may have been overly paranoid on hearing my friend's story but have been giving her loads of water and a different fruit every day, which is doing the trick so far.

You have probably thought about it already but if they have a bit of a cold or are teething that can put them off their food too.

Anyway good luck with it... its not much fun when you think they are in discomfort.

Defeatedbypoppers · 15/12/2008 10:33

Thanks Darkmere, that's interesting...dd does have a bit of a cold (has been lingering for weeks) and could def be teething too.

I don't think she's constipated but she's definitely finding it tricky to digest the solids. Am trying her with finger food too in case she's just taken agin the spoon!

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 15/12/2008 22:05

Hi! Dd has been getting on brilliantly!!

She has veg and then fruit for lunch then fruit or veg for tea!! As soon as she sees the bowl she starts licking her lips!!

Dd was a bit funny on Friday - She has been very constipated so we have introduces some apple juice in a beaker and fruit and that seems to have done the trick.

I havent tried toast yet but I will this week. Do you put anything on it??

OP posts:
Darkmere · 16/12/2008 13:43

Hi Laura

Good to hear from you.

We gave DD dry toast with some banana smeared on the first time she tried it. More recently we gave her dry toast dipped in yoghurt and more excitingly yesterday she tried cheese on toast and seemed to really enjoy it. The only reason we have given her dry toast so far is we didn't have any unsalted butter in. As soon as we get some she will have some butter too!

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 16/12/2008 15:33

Hi Darkmere,

Banana on toast sounds like a winner. I am going to try it this weekend and see what happens!

Does your dd have a favourite? My dd seems to wolf down sweet potato or carrot!

The nappy change has been interesting!

OP posts:
Darkmere · 16/12/2008 16:12

Yeah my DD also likes sweet potato! She wasn't sure of it at first but the second time she tried it she wolfed it too. We haven't tried carrot yet but I think its a safe bet if she likes sweet potato.

I keep thinking I'm giving her odd combinations. Stuff I would never eat together. This morning she had two cheese on toast fingers, some apple, mango and yoghurt! (I know that sounds like loads but she just had a bit of all if it).

For tea tonight I have some mash potato leftovers and was going to mash half an avocado into it

I know what you mean about the nappies, the novelty has not worn off yet. Doing BLW we are left with a lot of mush and sometimes you think she hasn't eaten anything ... just squished it around. But the nappies tell a different story!

Darkmere · 16/12/2008 16:13

Forgot to mention her fave so far is definitely tangerine! Just like her mum.

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 16/12/2008 17:45

How does your dd cope with mashed food? Do you give her a spoon or does she just use her hands??

Avocado - That is a great idea. I have been giving dd jars of fruit and she loves it all so far. I am going puree some 'real' fruit this weekend for her.

I cant wait until Christmas day! Dd is going to have the works minus the salt!

The novelty hasnt worn off here either! I love giving her food. She has dropped a bottle today so it will be interesting to see if she wakes in the night for one.
