Warhammer?

Any players on here?

I’ve never played before but me and my 11yr old wandered in to the local shop today out of interest!

We were given a figure from the 40,000 game and invited back next week for a free painting and game session!

We’re excited but no absolutely zero about it!

My husband thinks it’s a sure fire way of wasting money but I think it might be good for DS. Get him off his PC and something we could do together

My son manages the Warhammer shop in Carmarthen. He started with painting the figures when he was about 10 and getting the occasional magazines.
He loves introducing younger people to it and his son of 7 has started painting small things. Unfortunately there's no games going on in store, that's why they're doing the one to ones.
I think it's a lovely thing for you to do together and the upside is that he'll never be short of ideas for Christmas and birthday presents! Grin

SquirryTheSquirrel · 12/08/2021 18:18

I used to play it in the 1990s - great to hear it's still thriving! No up to date knowledge, but I hope this is the start of a fulfilling hobby for your DS.

Trinacham · 12/08/2021 18:21

Not me but my husband does it. It certainly gets him off his computer - his other hobby! I don't like it personally and think it's too expensive, but glad he has an in interest in something. It's a good way of socialising aswell. Hubby goes to a club and his mates all do it too.

00100001 · 12/08/2021 18:23

It's a potential money pit.

But good game 🙂

00100001 · 12/08/2021 18:26

It's a money pit, but not a waste of money. After all, what's the difference (say) between buying 6 PS4 games at £40+ each a year, and spending £250+ on Warhammer Models?

Like any hobby, you can spend as much or as little as you want. There's always a second hand market for the models.

Invisimamma · 12/08/2021 18:26

My nearly 11yr old has been into Warhammer for just over a year or so. He loves it. He is an obsessive video gamer but will actually spend hours building and painting intricate Warhammer models. I'm so impressed with what he's learned to do.

It is an expensive hobby though. If you're going to go for it pick one army to build up and stick with it for a while. We made the mistake of switching between a few different kind to begin with but he couldn't play with them as he didn't have enough points of a single army.

I find the rules quite complicated but his dad plays with him. Try watching a few YouTube tutorials, that's how my ds has picked it up. He started during lockdown so hasn't been able to go to battles in the shop and has mostly self taught .

NiceGerbil · 12/08/2021 18:28

DH has been painting the figures since he was a boy.

The free painting session sounds fab!

You can do the painting Hobby (note capitalisation!) and not play the game if you prefer.

There's also the monthly white dwarf magazine. Which is a handy birthday etc present for a subscription. And all the paints etc.

Can watch famous ones paint their little men (as I call them) online.

And there's the boardgames as well as the main one and a range of books about their adventures as well.

It's all good wholesome stuff really. And always something to buy for presents.

The people in the shops are generally lovely as well.

I'd say yes for sure.

Yeah, that’s what the guy in the shop said. That there’s only 1-1 atm. Which is a shame. Bit prob best for my shy son to start with!

Thanks! Yeah, it looks like it could be a good hobby to have on and off.

Yeah, that’s my thinking! My son has recently finally stopped playing Fortnite and I used to begrudge him spending all his pocket money on V Bucks 🙄

His recent purchases have been Pokemon cards and he thinks Warhammer looks similar in the fact that you collect and play.... but way way better!

I like that there’s reading involved as he’s not a natural book personz

It’s a great hobby. DH has got back into building and painting over lockdown, and while we are LITERALLY about to move house so he has a room for all his painting stuff (Hmm) it’s great. He’s got 9yo DD into it, they spent the day in London yesterday and her highlight was going to the new Warhammer shop and buying a tank which she has spent all day today building. It was lovely to see her so something other than gaming!

That’s lovely! 😊

My ds sometimes, using it loosely! Plays with lego and actually built a tank the other day! He’s growing a bit bored of lego though so I’m hoping this can be the next ‘stage’

My DS is just getting into this, anything that gets him off his computer is good !

TakeMeToYourLiar · 12/08/2021 19:18

I know lots of adults including DH that are unto it.

Cons are my house is full of plastic models

Pros, it's good for maths skills, socialising, learning probability etc

Though if I hear one more thing about the new codex I may scream

RandomMess · 12/08/2021 19:27

When he's a bit older get him into the game they do called Blood Bowl - it's more like Chess and you only have 16 players on a team so much cheaper and portable!

TBF if you are learning together I'd give it a go now. You can also play it on line but it's not the same.

RandomMess · 12/08/2021 19:29

We have very many models - a team in every species, many the original metal ones. He spends hours painting for fun, goes on days/weekends away playing in tournaments as well as pre-Covid playing in a league.

Howyoualldoworkme · 12/08/2021 19:29

And if any Warhammer fans are in Wales go into the Carmarthen shop as my son loves helping newbies.
His painting is quite incredible even if I say so myself!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 12/08/2021 19:32

Husband encouraged son to get into it, house is full of half painted models BUT it's not a screen so all good I reckon, and although the models are expensive they hold their value secondhand.

NothingIsWrong · 12/08/2021 19:35

My husband is into it and he does it with all the kids. I play sometimes as well on the boardgame version.

The house is stuffed full of little plastic models and paints, but occupies hours and hours of their time

LeroyJenkinssss · 12/08/2021 19:36

It’s great - my ds and DH play with the youngest watching. It can be a bit of a money pit but (I think) it’s better than spending money on in game purchases plus I like painting them. There are some starter armies you can get and the guys in the shops are always lovely and welcoming. I think it’s a great thing for shy kids who perhaps would struggle in other social situations because there’s a focus/distraction and the social aspect is an addition.

MsWalterMitty · 12/08/2021 19:57

Thanks everyone!

I’ve been looking at the prices 🙈.... But thinking on Tues we’ll buy a basic starter set and a basic paint set 😀

OP posts:
MsWalterMitty · 12/08/2021 19:57

Then everything else will be second hand 🤣🤣

My brother and his friends play.

When they were younger one of his friends had given his brother a lift somewhere and managed to spill whisky all over his car.

A couple of hours later he was pulled over by the police, and asked amongst other things what was in the box on the passenger seat. His answer… ‘goblins’.

Once they breathalized him and realised he wasn’t high or drunk they asked for a look. Oh says the police man it really is goblins Grin (a war hammer army of goblins).

I’ve spent a fortune on it over the years, the bonus is you’re never stuck for a birthday present idea.

My brother made the mistake of not concentrating on one ‘army’ at a time and didn’t have enough figures. He sold some a few years back and actually made a profit!

Thurlow · 12/08/2021 20:02

Plus, I think it’s getting “cool” now after Henry Cavill has come out as a massive Warhammer geek. I mean, if Superman plays it, it has to be good, right?
