Warhammer?

Any players on here?

I’ve never played before but me and my 11yr old wandered in to the local shop today out of interest!

We were given a figure from the 40,000 game and invited back next week for a free painting and game session!

We’re excited but no absolutely zero about it!

My husband thinks it’s a sure fire way of wasting money but I think it might be good for DS. Get him off his PC and something we could do together

@Marmite27

My brother and his friends play.

When they were younger one of his friends had given his brother a lift somewhere and managed to spill whisky all over his car.

A couple of hours later he was pulled over by the police, and asked amongst other things what was in the box on the passenger seat. His answer… ‘goblins’.

Once they breathalized him and realised he wasn’t high or drunk they asked for a look. Oh says the police man it really is goblins Grin (a war hammer army of goblins).

I’ve spent a fortune on it over the years, the bonus is you’re never stuck for a birthday present idea.

My brother made the mistake of not concentrating on one ‘army’ at a time and didn’t have enough figures. He sold some a few years back and actually made a profit!

That’s funny 🤣

Also, good to know about the armies... Someone else above mentioned this too. He’s chosen the 40,000 game.

@Thurlow

Plus, I think it’s getting “cool” now after Henry Cavill has come out as a massive Warhammer geek. I mean, if Superman plays it, it has to be good, right?
That is cool!

DS started playing and we bought him the starter set, he then stopped playing but returned a year later, we found most of his figures were out of date and we were encouraged to buy the new starter set.

we are not keen to return due to the cost and lack of playing opportunities. We did the academy but once you learned how to play there were no clubs or opportunities outside of playing at home 😪

MsWalterMitty · 12/08/2021 20:43

I’m just doing some reading online.

My sons birthday is in Sept so I’m thinking after our intro at the shop next week I’ll buy him the starter set and paint set. But for him to play against say me... will I need a starter set too?

Just be aware that when the shops do open again for gaming.... It's definitely a smelly boy zone 😷
Although,to be fair, some shops are pretty good at sorting that out!

There's probably a Warhammer society near you as well, where people will meet up and play. 👍

That’s interesting. I was just reading how they’ve recently?? Not sure how recently! Revamped. So they have new armies like you say, with new rules. So maybe my timing has been better? Shame for your son though! I can understand why you’re reluctant to start again!

🤣... My dd was worth us today, she’s 7 and has asked if she can paint some figures 🙈... This could become expensive but Im happy to introduce more girls to a Male domination hobby

You could probably just split the army and make sure you both have the same/similar size in points value (each unit has a points value)

Especially if you're all just learning and testing the waters.

You never know, you might get hooked and be leading your army of Space Marines in the next tournament Grin

RandomMess · 12/08/2021 20:48

They update the rules fairly regularly and change the models yes to make you buy new models 🙄 usually every 2-3 years.

You can just tell who you are playing against that X are actually Y.

Can you see why I was encouraging Blood Bowl with 16 models per team 😂

To play at home to begin with when we didn't have a big enough collection my ds had his Warhammer army, and my dp play with chess pieces and assigned Warhammer to them, if that makes sense. It seemed to work for them.

You also play with armies of equal points, for example 1000 point army each, so if you didn't have enough you could just split what you have and play with less points to begin with. Less points is a shorter game too. Although I don't entirely understand it all.

Brill! That’s really helpful! Thanks!

I have Harry Potter chess which might go quite well 🤣

@Howyoualldoworkme we may well have met your son yesterday as our visit to Carmarthen ended up in Warhammer. If he was working in the afternoon he was lovely to my son.
DH has played table top RPGs forever, and ds also plays, though D&D rather than Warhammer- but likes to buy the miniatures from there. It's a great hobby IMO even though I have no interest in playing

Howyoualldoworkme · 12/08/2021 23:43

CMOTDibbler Yes that would have been him, he's the only one there. It's a dear little shop, it does very well. Head Office say he could go anywhere but he likes it there.
He always says he's so lucky that he can work doing his hobby. He ran the shop in Haverfordwest until it closed and also ran a couple of clubs. He's got two and a half children now so hasn't got the time!

Wish he'd get rid of the beard though Grin

FrippEnos · 12/08/2021 23:55

If he is going to play there are starter sets from £35 (ish from their webstore)

Two sides as a mini game.

ebay often has whole armies up for sale.

stuffnthings · 13/08/2021 00:03

My heart is warmed with this thread! I think Games Workshop and their games are fantastic and for everyone. I've got so much up in the loft I've collected from the very late 80's, must dig them out!

FrippEnos · 13/08/2021 00:31

Just another thought.

If he is going to play against others you will need the most up to date rules not only for the game but the army that he is playing.

Is it mandatory for them to have beards?... The lovely chap in my local had one too 🤣

Yeah I’m thinking I’ll get him a starter set for his birthday next month. It’s good timing really! 😀

@stuffnthings if you have metal models or even just particular old ones they are worth ££££££££££

ItsSnowJokes · 13/08/2021 10:20

Be warned they get into one table top game and before you know it you have blood bowl, King's of war, X-Wing and various other games that involve planes etc.... all over your house in various states of painting.

Yes my husband is a table top gamer. Although there is a lot worse things he could be doing, it's harmless.
