Warhammer?

Any players on here?

I’ve never played before but me and my 11yr old wandered in to the local shop today out of interest!

We were given a figure from the 40,000 game and invited back next week for a free painting and game session!

We’re excited but no absolutely zero about it!

My husband thinks it’s a sure fire way of wasting money but I think it might be good for DS. Get him off his PC and something we could do together
@stuffnthings if you have metal models or even just particular old ones they are worth ££££££££££
Oh really? I should have a rummage then! I have a lot of metal models and some plastic kits (40k vehicles) which are unbuilt.

Off the top of my head I have the following boxed games; Space Marine (Epic 2 editions), WH40K and expansions, Bloodbowl, Space Hulk & expansions, Man O' War, Titan Legions (Epic) plus some extensions. Armies wise; Orks (Epic), Space Marines (WH40K), Man 'O War (Dwarves) and other models for the above games.

I've not really looked at Games Workshop for years, are the old games/rules/models still usable and wanted?

stuffnthings · 13/08/2021 10:33

In answer to your question OP, I think it's a brilliant hobby for anyone, I loved it when I was younger. Sure, it was viewed as a bit geeky back then, but I think that has changed a lot now and would always recommend table top gaming as a good, social activity.

RandomMess · 13/08/2021 10:55

@stuffnthings OMG from my very limited knowledge Blood Bowl and Man o War oh yes!!!

Have a search on Ebay sold for prices.

I daren't tell my DH what you have up there 😂 let me know if you are interested in selling things as a job lot!!!

RandomMess · 13/08/2021 11:01

@ItsSnowJokes DH is getting into X-wing, think I am traumatised having to witness him watching people playing on tube to learn how to play 😳

At least all his painting is limited to his office and very many display cabinets.

At least they don't have to paint them!

RandomMess · 13/08/2021 11:05

@stuffnthings so I stupidly mentioned your collection to DH and he would be especially interested in Man O War as he sold his when the DC were young and we were broke.

Send me a PM if you're interested.

No doubt he'll fancy another original dwarf blood bowl team too 🤦🏼‍♀️

RandomMess · 13/08/2021 11:21

@ItsSnowJokes hmmm at least that would give him something to paint 🤷🏽‍♀️ he will end up buying teams or paint for people he knows when he runs out.

He's on a count down to the next tournament in September after not playing at one for 18 months due to Covid.

MajesticallyAwkward · 13/08/2021 11:32

My DH plays warhammer (and a load of other miniature games) and loves it, he's hoping to get our DC playing when they're older too.

It's a great hobby, can be a little expensive but you can be smart and save money. I'd recommend joining some fb groups for community and also buying and selling. DH has had a few bargains from fb groups from people selling unwanted armies/spares.
I've dabbled but never committed, it's fun and I think it can teach children a lot and the social side is a huge benefit (I'd much rather my dc played something like this than computer games).

There's also loads of 40k novels your ds might enjoy.

Hehe, no problem. I'll try and dig out what I have and can PM a detailed list to see if there is anything your DH is interested in. It might be a week or so due as I'm juggling work and school holidays, but certainly ping me a reminder if I've not been in touch.

RandomMess · 13/08/2021 11:42

@stuffnthings will do.

MajesticallyAwkward · 13/08/2021 13:56

@ItsSnowJokes

Be warned they get into one table top game and before you know it you have blood bowl, King's of war, X-Wing and various other games that involve planes etc.... all over your house in various states of painting.

Yes my husband is a table top gamer. Although there is a lot worse things he could be doing, it's harmless.

My DH also has a 3D printer that he uses for models too... his 'shame pile' (the masses of unpainted models) is huge 😂 he keeps trying to persuade me to paint them but I much prefer the stuffed fables minis my DD plays with, so fun to paint!
MajesticallyAwkward · 13/08/2021 13:58

@stuffnthings I've just read your list to DH and he was practically drooling! He said to have a look on eBay for the selling prices because some of them will be £££

However, if you happen to have a 1995 WH quest drop me a PM!

RandomMess · 13/08/2021 14:10

@MajesticallyAwkward DH was turning rather green...

I'm sure the last time he had Man O War the issue was finding other people to play against 🙄

DH has an amazing memory for stuff he's interested in and can tell you when a model was produced, if it's super rare or not and why it's rare etc etc etc

"that's nice dear".

If I outlive him it's going to take some doing to sell all his teams off. He even has none GW ones because the models are nicer/better. They all individual display stands too...

MajesticallyAwkward · 13/08/2021 17:24

@RandomMess he sounds exactly like my dh! He'll tell me how it's made, what it's made from/why it changed materials, production history, rule changes... and not just WH, he has maybe 9 minis games currently on the go.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 14/08/2021 08:16

Are we all married to the same DH? Mine has instructed me where to go to sell his if he dies. Confused

HowToMurderYourLife · 14/08/2021 08:36

My DH is also a big fan of the Hobby! Our house is full of bits of plastic crack which I battle to contain to one area!

While they do update the rules etc it doesn’t have to be a big issue. If you get in with a small local playing group of friends you can choose what to play and lots of people will play with older rules. DH isn’t a fan of the big competitive tournaments and they taken turns to arrange their own weekend events instead which gives them flexibility as what to play. It’s serious business with T shirts, awards and the like!

It can be a really good way to make friends. DHs group are a real social mix from 20s up to 50s.

I don’t play myself but get regularly sent in to pick up paints etc as the shop is near my yoga class. Pre lockdown on a Saturday it was always full of teenagers painting and chatting so seems like a good way for a shy kid to make friends. I know quite a few of DHs group found it a real sanctuary when they were teens.

I hope the both of you enjoy it Smile.

bottersnikes · 14/08/2021 08:46

Another one with a wargaming DH here! He runs his own wargaming company, too,(writing and publishing tabletop games) so I can't escape them! Grin

Yeah I remember it being a bit geeky when I was in school in the 90s. But at the same time I was friends with those geeks and they were really nice (and often stoners 🙈)

A lot of schools in my area run clubs and I run the one at my school (I'm a novice but DP is really into it and I know enough to blag and help interested newbies). It's a really great way for the 'geeky' kids to find each other and have a space where they can share their interests without mocking from the sporty / popular types. Often a kid comes with an interest in WH and gets introduced to D&D or Magic the Gathering and they share their tips etc. I like Sigmar personally, more mythical and folklore than 40k but it's such a varied thing that's kind of the point. He could ask at school if any of the teachers would support a little lunchtime club?

Invisimamma · 15/08/2021 15:02

I don't think it's entirely fair to typecast 'geeky' kids and sporty/popular types. My ds plays for local league football team, is very athletic, confident and popular but also extremely keen on Warhammer. I think children are becoming more accepting of each others individuality and it doesn't help for adult to put them into boxes. I worry about him going up to secondary next year that he's going to need to choose which camp he wants to be in when he genuinely enjoys both.

I see your point there.

My son is a mad keen mnt biker and is keen to get in to basketball when he starts high school in Sept. Bit he has never been a typical sporty fan... hasn’t got a Clue about football and the leagues etc.

He loves his PC and seems keen on Warhammer so I’m hoping he’ll have all round interests.

We’ll see

@HowToMurderYourLife oh I can blag away to the GW staff they have such low expectations of a "Mum" and hope they can persuade you to spend £££££££

@MajesticallyAwkward I found a 80's halfling at a car boot this morning DH very happy 😂

Wbeezer · 15/08/2021 17:03

We selected a High school for DS2 based on the fact that it had a Warhammer club, which had folded by the time he started, however he asked to start it back up and now runs the Table Top Gaming Soc at his uni, it's the bedrock of his social life.

HugeAckmansWife · 15/08/2021 17:15

That's a fair point and I do and would encourage all 'types' to get involved but I've been teaching for a v v long time and whilst all kids are individuals and can combine interests in many diverse things it would be naive not to accept that there are some kids in most schools who do not fit a 'typical' archetype and can find it quite isolating. In my experience WH clubs, Lego clubs and similar can be a key building block for those kinds of students. Anyway, different discussion there! OP I hope your DS enjoys his new hobby
