I got this for Christmas and I’m in love. Is there a thread/community etc I could join?

I’m usually an AIBU inhabitant so this is a bit new...

Merryoldgoat · 28/12/2020 21:26

Yay! Il be online later this afternoon - stuck at work right now

MsMiaWallace · 29/12/2020 16:44

Just ordered this! It's for the kids really but I feel I'll be on it!

Merryoldgoat · 29/12/2020 17:16

It’s fab - so lovely and gentle. It’s like having a grown up dolls house.

My island has pears which makes me strangely happy

buffythevampireslayer91 · 29/12/2020 17:27

I have oranges which I'm not thrilled about 🤣 I have so many questions but no one to ask! Like what happens to my trees when I cut them down or finish the fruit??

Winterfellismyhome · 29/12/2020 17:28

The fruit will grow back in a few days or you can plant the fruit for more fruit trees. If you chop trees down, they don't come back

bearlyactive · 29/12/2020 17:31

Animal Crossing old-timer here, I can answer your questions Grin

Merryoldgoat · 29/12/2020 17:40

I want oranges! And cherries!

How do you cut trees down?! I’m still very new. I suspect I need to get a better axe.

OP posts:
cliffdiver · 30/12/2020 08:58

Ugh, I just accidentally sold my iron nuggets instead of donating them for the new shop.

cliffdiver · 30/12/2020 08:58

I have pears. And coconuts trees are growing, after collecting them from an island visited using Nook Miles.

Collect stones and twigs and craft an axe in the Nook Shop.

I CAUGHT THE STRINGFISH yesterday.

Can you tell I'm a wee bit excited?

buffythevampireslayer91 · 30/12/2020 10:38

@cliffdiver so do I plant the fruit I get from other islands? I planted a cedar sapling about 3 days ago and it's not growing at all? Any idea why?

buffythevampireslayer91 · 30/12/2020 10:38

@dannydyerismydad amazing!! Well done Smile

buffythevampireslayer91 · 30/12/2020 10:39

@bearlyactive I can never seem to get to visit other islands, I have friends but how do I ask them to open their gates for me?

Too close to an edge?

Emmelina · 30/12/2020 10:49

We’ve been playing since it was released - at the start of the March lockdown so as you can imagine we’ve put a lot of hours in :D
It’s lovely, and calming.
If you need bells quickly I’d recommend getting a wetsuit from Nook’s Cranny (or the Nook Stop if it’s not a proper shop yet) and going diving for sea creatures to sell to Timmy and Tommy. They make lots of money!
You’ll get a special visitor on each weekday who you can buy stuff from or help out in some way for a reward.
You may get Flick (a chameleon) who loves bugs, or CJ (a beaver) who loves to fish. If you save fish and bugs for these days they will pay 1.5x the amount Timmy and Tommy will!

The turnip girl will be wandering around on Sunday mornings selling turnips which you can sell at profit later in the week, you can ask Timmy and Tommy for turnip prices and sell when the price is high. (The stalk market!)
When you’re far enough in you’ll get a concert every Saturday.
At night after 7pm you may get a ghost floating around who you’ll scare just by speaking to him then you have to get his spirit pieces back for him!
Or a lovely owl obsessed with space who’ll give you a space or star sign related DIY recipe and watch shooting stars with you. You can wish on shooting stars by looking up and pressing A - star fragments you can use in recipes will wash up on the beach the next day.

So for visiting other islands you have two options:

Get a Nook Mile Ticket from the NookStop (if that's what it's called) from Resident Services, then go talk to the bird in the airport and he'll ask you whether you want to visit a mystery island using the Nook Miles Ticket. You will be taken to one of these mystery islands.

OR, if you want to visit a friend's island, you must have a Nintendo Switch Online account (you have to pay, can't remember how much) and so must your friends. Then ask them to open up their gates using the bird at the airport and selecting the "invite via DODO code" option. They'll get a five-letter code of letters and numbers (e.g. Q3WE5) which they send to you. Then you go and talk to the bird at the airport and tell him you want to visit a friend, and after connecting to the Internet he'll let you enter the DODO code, which will take you over to their island.

It might be too close to a cliff/river/edge/beach like PP said, or if you've planted it directly next to another tree or tree sapling it won't grow at all.

A few top tips:

Donate the first of each type of bug/fish/sea creature you get to Blathers in the museum, that helps you keep on top of them. Ditto fossils (as your museum fills up you start to get duplicates, which help you make money).

Save up your valuable bugs and fish (e.g. dorado, pike, any big fish apart from the sea bass, barred knifejaws, red snappers, birdwing butterflies, emperor butterflies etc etc, although most of those are summer-only) for Flick and CJ - that's how I paid off my house Grin

Achieving 5 stars isn't that important, but achieving 3 is because that's when you get the guitar-playing dog guy (K.K. something) to give weekly concerts, which help you get music to play around your island on stereos.

Make a habit of hitting your rocks daily. Dig two holes in the ground around the rock like this.... (H = hole, R = rock, dots are only there to stop the letters jumping to the end of the row)

..........H
.......H...RRRRRR
.............RRRRRR
.............RRRRRR

...and hit it with your shovel as fast as you can. No idea if that format will work on mobile!! Your shovel won't ever break in the middle of hitting a rock, but it might afterwards, so it's a good idea to always have a spare one with you. One rock per day will be a money rock, and you can get 100, 200, 300/400/500 (two of those options, can't remember which), 1,000, 2,000, 4,000 and 8,000 bells. NB: MAKE SURE YOU HAVEN'T EATEN ANY FRUIT BEFORE HITTING THE ROCK, BECAUSE IT WILL BREAK AND REAPPEAR SOMEWHERE ELSE THE NEXT DAY.

I've exhausted my top-tips, if I think of any more I'll come back Grin

Turnip exchange is a place where you can get codes to visit other peoples islands
