Blueroses depending on your level you should be able to do a level 1 or 2 raid by yourself. Suspect you might struggle with 3's at this point, but with a bit of internet searching you will learn how to build up your raid teams to defeat higher raid bosses. Only the very top players can solo 4's and very rarely 5's. Don't bother using/wasting your raid pass on one of these!
You get a free raid pass everyday but you can't accumulate them, so it's a kind of use it or lose it situation.
When the countdown gets to zero it should go into the battle screen starting with a big 'GO'. For now just use the recommended team until you can work out which of your Pokemon can make a more effective team. (the recommended tends to err on the defensive/stamina side rather than being the best attackers)
Keep tapping the screen in the same way you would battle someone in a gym (I'm presuming you have battled in a gym?) and whenever the charged attack bar at the bottom of the screen fills up, press that. If you have a google search there are plenty of youtube videos of people showing off raiding or battling that will give you a visual idea of what to expect.
It is useful to raid these smaller ones if you can, as you will get xp & stardust as rewards plus other items that will help you in the future such as rare candy (very useful stuff, don't waste!). The xp will help you to level up and the stardust is important for powering up Pokemon that will help you to get a better team.
I don't know if you got as far as using an appraisal app such as Pokegenie or Calcy IV to evaluate your Pokemon before? If not, it would be very useful to download one of these as they tell you the all important IV's of your mons. Again google very useful here!

Bestie in the last 48 hours has caught a shiny Psyduck, shiny sableye and a shiny seel, and just got a 100IV bronzor from field research - which is annoying but fair enough - but won't stop fucking CROWING about it. Every ten minutes. "Look at it!". "It's so pretty!".

Betty I think I understand, but how do you know what level a raid is? I got to level 27 before I stopped playing 2 years ago (difficult pregnancy, enforced bedrest...). I had a look at Poke Assist to calculate the IV of my best ones but I’ll have a look at those apps.

The number of little monster faces above an egg tell you what level it is!

Purple cherrim, yes. I got a one yellow one as well but it fled. At least it had the decency to appear for me.

If you have a raid pass going to waste it's still worth doing a T4 or T5 as you get 3,000 stardust for losing - as long as you have enough revivers and potions.

What is the difference between the two raid passes? I’ve noticed one can be deleted and the other can’t?

Premium raid passes can be deleted but standard ones can't. You can only hold 1 normal pass at a time, but an unlimited number of premium passes.

I tried a raid with my two kids as we're not in an area with lots of other PoGo players, and we didn't win the raid! Gave up after one raid.

Oh shame drF.
I did 4 and caught 2 so happy with that. Looking forward to kyogre coming back, I want one of those bloody whales!

Perfect weather for it, here, with cloud all 3 hours, meaning we could give our best machamps a good workout. Quite pleased that I managed the last minute duo.

I have spares of the latest spinda, so have agreed a trade with DS1.

Eleven raids.

No shinies.

Ten of them fled.

The one I caught was 72IV.

I just got a shiny geodude from a research task! And I randomly caught a shiny Squirtle yesterday.
