Slowly transitioning to a more plant based diet. I make lots of bean or chickpea based meals but for the first time I have bought Tofu and am looking for recommendations for how to cook it. Can anyone recommend their favourite recipes?

I’ve only just started eating it so keen for ideas too.

So far I’ve, after pressing, sprinkled it with Cajun seasoning & started it on the hob & finished it off in the oven. I done it in BBQ sauce & I’ve made it into a coated -not chicken-type burger. I will see if I can find the recipe & post it for you.

Recipe is printed but the video shows how to do it, It was nice. I do find it an acquired texture though

Recipes on Tofoo website. I've tried rendang, smoked tofu goulash, katsu burger, aubergine parmigiana.

Tofu scramble!
There's lots of recipes online but I just mash it up in the frying pan and add onion granules, garlic granules, cumin, coriander and then salt + pepper once its cooked. So quick and easy and so tasty. Also my 11 month loves it.

Hoppinggreen · 30/03/2022 14:51

Use the firm one
I sprinkle it with flour then shallow fry before using it in most cases
Just use it like you would if it were a chicken breast or something

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/03/2022 14:55

Use the firm one and press it for a few hours.
In a shallow bowl, mix oil, soy, honey and five spice powder (or similar combinations of your choice)
Dip tofu slices in on both sides and out on not stick baking sheet
Sprinkle with sesame seeds if wished
Bake
Eat with a vegetable stir fry or Thai curry

You need to coat it with something that will go crunchy plus something tasty then fry or bake it.

Coating - flour, polenta, gram flour, breadcrumbs etc

Flavour - paprika, salt and pepper, cumin etc

My family loves this sticky sesame tofu.

If you have Instagram follow a guy called pengveganmunch. So many delicious tofu recipes.

Its a bit of a faff but stay with me...

Freeze it, thaw it and repeat again gives tofu a much more meatier texture.

Fry it and add to Thai curries, stir fry, pad Thai

Mapo Tofu or Korean braised tofu - excellent recipe in Meera Sodha's book East

Whatever you do with it, press it and marinate it first.

Hoppinggreen · 31/03/2022 09:59

If it’s the firm Tofu no need to press it. I just pop it on kitchen till to dry out and then dust with flour

muppamup · 31/03/2022 10:01

something like this

any tofu steak whereby you marinade in advance

It's still much better pressed and you get a lot of water out of it
Sofasogood1 · 31/03/2022 10:11

I made pad Thai last night. Crumble into frying pan. Add turmeric. Fry a bit. Take out. Do veg and noodles etc add tofu back. Top with sauce and spring onion, chilli, peanuts.

WellNotReally · 31/03/2022 10:12

It's lovely marinated in soy, lime juice, a tiny bit of sugar and chilli flakes. Then fry or grill.

Gousto have lovely recipes: a hoisin tofu burger and a sesame coated tofu recipe - happy to write them out if you fancy them?

Hlglu56 · 31/03/2022 20:48

Thanks everyone. Lots of inspiration. I’m going to try the sticky sesame tofu first, thanks fivemoreminutes.

Some other recipes we enjoy:
Traybake
Katsu curry
Bang bang tofu
Thai curry

TrufflyPig · 01/04/2022 05:52

It actually air frys pretty well. I press it, chop it into cubes and air fry with a touch of sesame oil. Stick it in a stir fry or curry then.

Sundance5 · 01/04/2022 07:14

The best way is tossed in seasoned (white pepper, salt, garlic powder) corn flour and fried. Not as healthy as other options, salt and pepper tofu is delicious if you add all the other ingredients.

You can also dry fry and keep squeezing out the liquid by squashing with the back of a spatula then marinade and add to meals.

whyohwhy101 · 04/04/2022 19:28

I use the firm Tofoo (so it doesn't need pressing etc) to make tofu scramble with onions and peppers, turmeric, garlic powder and black salt. I sometimes add broccoli and vegan sausages. It's so lovely.
