Vegan Plans For Christmas

Anyone both vegan and love Christmas?

I don’t drink any more but M&S do a lovely chocolate and coconut milk liqueur that’s like vegan baileys, it’s down to £6.

I’m planning to do a vegan cheese board as it went down surprisingly well last year. Plan is some cream sheese and Wensleydale and cranberry sheese, some vegusto, some artisan nut cheese and maybe some violife.

Anyone got any vegan Christmas tips, ideas or traditions?

Breakfast is usually the jusrol cinnamon swirls

I am not vegan either, but being the parent of vegetarian DD who does veganuary every year I enjoy the challenge and creativity of vegan foods and recipes.

The choice and availability of vegan protein substitutes is improving immensely, and I have noticed that more veggie meals in pubs and restaurants are marked as vegan rather than vegetarian. Jamie Oliver has some brilliant vegan recipes - his vegan shepherd's pie is delicious, and even DD's hardened meat eater boyfriend loves it.

The Bosh recipes are brilliant - we now have the recipe book. And places like Yo sushi and Wagamamas do some absolutely delicious vegan dishes now.

I just wish I could source gluten more easily as I haven't tasted a commercially produced seitan that I like.

We are going to have mushroom and lentil wellington this year - did a trial run last week and it was delicious!

JanetLovesJason · 11/11/2018 09:13

Try Buy Whole Foods Online for gluten Lonerica.

LoniceraJaponica · 11/11/2018 09:17

Will do, thank you. I have made one lot of seitan before, and it was much nicer than any other that I have tried. I have a dough hook on my food mixer so it was very easy to make.

JanetLovesJason · 11/11/2018 09:23

I’m gluten free, so I always notice the gluten listing there when I’m browsing as I’m trying to give it a wide berth!

kikisparks · 11/11/2018 09:24

Loving all the ideas! I’m quite interested in trying a homemade seitan roast if anyone has recipes, I have some vital wheat gluten in the cupboard.

If anyone is looking for sweet snack desserts for a Christmas party or similar aldi dark chocolate lebkuchen and chocolate filled churros are vegan and Lidl usually have vegan chocolate marzipan logs.

The chocolate and raspberry cake recipe on the vegan website is lush. I have made it several times and not told people it was vegan, and they loved it.

I'm going to make a mushroom tart for my Christmas dinner. I'm going to roast lots of different vegetables with it and some vegan gravy. For a starter I might fry a slice of seasoned tofu really well on just one side, slice it and create a kind of chicken salad with it. I will probably make some kind of cherry cake for desert as I don't like Christmas cake or mince pies. I'm going to buy a nice little stash of dark chocolate, crackers, nuts, pickles and cheeses.

I like the idea of that Jus Rol pain au cholocat for breakfast.

kikisparks · 11/11/2018 09:31

@FoofFighter I quite like the look of the cauliflower wellington, might get that too.

Can end up with too much as I want to try a bit of everything! This year 5 out of 9 of us for Christmas are vegan, another 2 are vegetarian and will be happy to eat vegan so there will be very minimal non vegan food, probably just the turkey for the other 2, so I can maybe justify a few different things for people to try!

@NameChanger22 all sounds so good!

I’m getting hungry!

I bought the HughGearnley whirring oh go my phone hates his name and I can't be armed to correct it - you know who I mean - anyway? I bought his vegan cook book and was distinctly underwhelmed. Tray bake. Tray bake. Sugar. Sugar in a tray bake.

Mum2OneTeen · 11/11/2018 10:06

Watching with interest as we are vegetarian & DD is vegan, so a vegan Christmas it will be.

Last year, I made a polenta and roast vege stack with basil oil & balsamic drizzle, the non-vegans had the addition of fried haloumi but it wasn't really needed. For dessert I made a vegan tiramisu which was utterly delicious.

We're in Australia, so tend to have more salad/tasting table things rather than roasts. Another year I made a fanastic vegan Japanese inspired feast which was eagerly devoured by all.

Not sure what lunch we will be having will be this year. For the first time in years we will be staying home and my elderly mother will be joining us. There won't be vegan cheese though, unless it's one I make myself. I've yet to find a vegan cheese here worth eating.

Mum2OneTeen · 11/11/2018 10:08

@LoniceraJaponica Can you tell me the website that has the vegan choc raspberry cake recipe you mentioned?

kikisparks · 11/11/2018 11:50

@VanillaSugary there are so many vegan cookbooks available now and some are definitely better than others?

OP posts:
kikisparks · 11/11/2018 11:50

That wasn’t meant to be a question mark!

OP posts:
kikisparks · 11/11/2018 11:51

@Mum2OneTeen that’s all sounds amazing, do you have the recipe for the tirimasu?

Raspberry chocolate cake recipe

Mum2OneTeen · 13/11/2018 05:01

Ooh! Thank you for that link @LoniceraJaponica, that cake does look lovely and I think I may have to do a test run very soon.

Kiki, I'll have to hunt the tiramisu recipe down, it was cobbled together from several recipes I found online.

Some wonderful suggestions on this thread, I'm jealous of all the readymade items you have in the UK.
