Vegan Plans For Christmas

Anyone both vegan and love Christmas?

I don’t drink any more but M&S do a lovely chocolate and coconut milk liqueur that’s like vegan baileys, it’s down to £6.

I’m planning to do a vegan cheese board as it went down surprisingly well last year. Plan is some cream sheese and Wensleydale and cranberry sheese, some vegusto, some artisan nut cheese and maybe some violife.

Anyone got any vegan Christmas tips, ideas or traditions?

Thank goodness for this thread, I need help 😩 my lovely DIL has recently become vegan and I realised almost all our favourite Xmas foods contain meat or dairy so need some ideas of how to adapt everyday recipes if possible.

Is there a good alternative to cream? Are all vegetable stock cubes vegan? Any ideas for a main dish that doesn’t contain mushrooms?

PurpleDaisies · 13/11/2018 07:56

This is a really nice main without mushrooms. Buy vegan sherry and puff pastry and swap butter for dairy free.

kikisparks · 13/11/2018 08:41

@Notmymug which type of cream?

Single cream- alpro is in most supermarkets looks like this www.sainsburys.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/gb/groceries/alpro-long-life-alternative-to-cream-250ml?langId=44&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIl6mexPvQ3gIVGuh3Ch3Spgi1EAQYBCABEgInrvD_BwE&storeId=10151&krypto=YXbOeJxBSVbFNkPYf0B2euvR%2FhotIs4%2B7XDiXb7BF028A9qZo4GUBDOQglk7A95m2us7Us7XGTmBXJbQUShvRmO8fMPvU94KJPVElwexckBElV%2B4fnQu0Dv0CdcBQ7l%2BWKByBa97BmClaLRsuKnsZI0TxYqM3mlPTV9aF5EgMTeqouaOQDgkVk55wuEycPxSgXgwyL23giAmEfyCLIGrSzrbHewsWPdnvN60gQY0CxVMPVimb5wNHLTLxrVQb0DC&ddkey=https%3Agb%2Fgroceries%2Falpro-long-life-alternative-to-cream-250ml can be in both fresh and long life sections.

Squirty cream in Asda see pic.

You can make whipped cream with coconut cream www.myfussyeater.com/how-to-make-whipped-coconut-cream/

Most stock cubes are vegan just check they say suitable for vegetarians and don’t contain milk. Bisto gravy (red tub) also vegan.

The Tesco cauliflower wellington looks lush

Notmymug · 13/11/2018 12:02

Thanks @kikisparks, that’s is really helpful, and I will certainly be making the chocolate raspberry tart 😁

dangermouseisace · 13/11/2018 22:26

I think I must be the only person on the planet who thinks Bosh recipes are a bit shit. I’ve got their book, but anything I’ve made I’ve had to alter because it has been tasteless, or the instructions haven’t been that great and have missed out what I would feel to be a major step. I’ve been cooking vegan for decades so I suppose I had high hopes when everyone went on about them.

I usually make this which usually goes down well and doesn’t look like it involves a mushroom to picky kids. Without the beaten egg obviously though!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/11/2018 19:54

I've got the Bosh book but can't say it appeals much to me. Too many recipes have tomatoes, or just look a bit style over substance. I haven't cooked anything out of it.

This is lovely. Haven't had it for Christmas dinner, but I think it would go really well with roasties etc.

Heismyopendoor · 18/11/2018 09:52

Another one that’s after a Yorkshire pudding tried and tested recipe :)

StoatofDisarray · 18/11/2018 09:56

I'm doing a traditional steamed suet pudding with chestnut mushrooms, a savoury gravy with herbs, mushroom ketchup, and caramelized onions inside. With a sprig of rosemary sticking out of the top :D

kikisparks · 18/11/2018 19:29

@StoatofDissaray sounds yummy!

I’m doing a vegan “quality street” type tin again this year, so far have white and “milk” chocolate coins, chocolate truffles, dark chocolate orange cremes and white chocolate strawberry cremes.

We love the bosh book, we made their mushroom Wellington recipe last Christmas and it was so delicious we're definitely doing it again this year.

I'm looking for some nice pates and cheeses for the evening Smile

LesAnya · 19/11/2018 17:34

The Bosh choc fudge cake is really good!
kikisparks is the squirty cream in Asda rice based? I had high hopes for a rice based one for hot chocolate and it was Envy (not envy)

kikisparks · 19/11/2018 17:43

@LesAnya just looked and it’s palm oil based Blush it says rspo certified but I understand that doesn’t really mean anything.

Still vegan but I know a lot (including me) avoid or limit palm oil.

@kikisparks love the quality street chocolate tin idea! I'm going to do that this year I think! I always make a chestnut and mushroom wellington for main, which goes down well with everyone, even my partners omni parents. And I love making my own mince pies, with a grated marzipan top. My mum makes insane nut cheeses and sausage rolls which I always look forward to! Ooooh I'm getting excited now, although I'm pregnant so I'm going to miss my ginger wine 😩

kikisparks · 19/11/2018 20:33

@witchy89 sounds really good!

If anyone is looking for after eights apparently Asda’s own are sfv.

Violife is doing a cheese platter in sainsburys and this year doesn’t have the nasty blue one like last year.

I'm making a variation on this lentil nut roast for the main, along with all the usual roast veggies: www.saga.co.uk/magazine/food/recipes/christmas/vegan-lentil-nutroast
I made it last year and it was pretty easy and very tasty, and it makes Christmas dinner a bit different, as usually we eat curries or one bowl type meals. I am hosting this year but everyone seems happy to be veggie and mostly vegan for a few days. I'm just not sure what to do about the cake, as my mum has gluten intolerance. If anyone knows a great cake that is vegan and gluten-free, please share! Perhaps there is a way to make the Bosh chocolate cake gluten-free? I don't live in the UK and there aren't so many options in the shops here.
