Anglesey in the rain: what is there to do?

Slubberdegullion · 13/07/2009 15:50

Apart from the sea zoo thing and Canaerfon castle. We have done those already as day trips from the Lleyn.

We have a 4 and a 5 year old (dds) so anything involving soft fluffy animals, bunnies, ponies etc etc.

Indoor play hell holes centres as well, but nice ones. Nothing attached to a brewsters fair thankyouverymuch.

Oh and a GOOD family pub recommendation too please.

thankyooooooooou

hahahahahah

tis cos you are shivering my lovely

Slubberdegullion · 13/07/2009 16:16

We always used to go to Anglesey camping when we were super small and there are relentless photo albuns of my sister and me in thick wooly jumpers, cagoules with the hood really tightly done up so there is just a small round hole of face poking through and my dad valiantly standing on sandcastles with the rain flying in horizontally.

It only took them about 5 years to work out France was MUCH nicer. I guess we are going through the learning curve now.

Have been sending FECK ORF RAIN vibes mate

awww to childhood pics

(was laughing at typos not at your predicament)

Slubberdegullion · 13/07/2009 16:33

Yes please to feck off rain vibes.

Don't tell the campers but this is why we have a holiday cottage booked for the second week.

2 weeks in wet tent in wet wales does not a happy camper make.

bumping for the tea time crew matey

mejon · 13/07/2009 18:18

here? Beumaris Castle? Plas Newydd (National Trust house)? Can't comment on the first two but did visit Plas Newydd years ago. Most of it was inside so good if it is raining!

Slubberdegullion · 13/07/2009 18:23

excellent. Ta mejon. Pili palace looks perfect and we are NT members so that's a freebie day. DH big castle fan too. Thank you

(thanks for the bump too baldy )

Feeble lunchtime bump

LupusinaLlamasuit · 14/07/2009 12:32

Ooooh, famous.

Yeah, Pili Palace is great. Trearddur Bay Hotel has decent-ish food for the family.

There are, ooooh, 8 million castles in N Wales so you'll find at least one with a roof (Harlech, Criccieth etc all v good once you've done Beaumaris)

Train up Snowdon?

Mountain energy centre somewhere nearby (can't remember exactly)

Slate mines in Blaenau Festiniog (underground, so damp but no actual rain )

Slubberdegullion · 14/07/2009 12:46

at damp mines. We've done cricceith castle but will put Baumaris on the list.

aww the Traedurr bay hotel is where my father used to spend all his childhood holidays. Oh I'm having a warm bonding moment through the generations.

LL as you are "in the know" can you tell me, what is the best beach? We are camping near Lligwy.

LupusinaLlamasuit · 14/07/2009 14:01

I am only a bit in the 'know'... We love Newborough beach: wild and free sometimes and great mountain views...

But Trearrdur itself is quite nice in a seasidey kind of way: many more facilities (ice creams, cafes, boats etc) and rock pools etc.

Up north near Rhosneigr lovely beaches too but VERY noisy what with all the Harrier jump jets taking off all the time.

Have not been for a long time though, prob someone else can give you more up to date suggestions...

wingandprayer · 14/07/2009 14:10

Sorry we thought pili pallas was utter rubbish. So lame. Foel Farm next to sea zoo supposed to be really good but don't know how much of it is indoors. White eagle pub in rhosneigr is fantastic - great local food and kids really welcome. Would second rrcommendation for Newborough beach also Church Bay in north for excellent rock pools.

Slubberdegullion · 14/07/2009 14:18

ta muchly .

Trearddur sounds nice for a day trip.

How many ways can we spell treadurr

OP posts:
Slubberdegullion · 14/07/2009 14:21

wing&aprayer, foel farm, is that mostly foals ?[hopeful]

OP posts:
MarthaFarquhar · 14/07/2009 14:32

My DD was thrilled with Foel Farm, but she is only 2.3. It's fairly small, but the children can get very hands on with the animals (fluffy bunnies, shetland ponies, scary donkey etc).

There's also a tractor ride, and a big bouncy castle/trampoline hybrid, which kept DD busy for hours.

Best meal we had was in a slightly ropey looking caff at the Castle End of the main street in Beaumaris. Can't remember the name, but it was next door to one of the bunting cupcake emporia.

Slubberdegullion · 14/07/2009 14:44

Foel Farms sounds right up our the dds street. Excellent.

Will have to c&p this thread for eating venues.

wingandprayer · 15/07/2009 08:56

On second thoughts I think White Eagle may be Rhoscolyn but is near rhosneigr anyway. Was easy to find when I Googled it. Not sure how many foals there are at Foel Farm . When we tried to go in wet and windy March was closed.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 15/07/2009 09:49

Don't go to Pillis Palas.

Biggest pile of crap I've ever seen.

There's a copper mine around Snowdon area which is great. I can't remember the name but we did it in the pouring rain and obviously once you're inside it's great.

Lots of climbing though so not for tiny tots.

Beaumaris castle is good too.

And if the sun comes out there is a lovely walk from the village the near the Menai Bridge. You can walk under the Menai Bridge and round the corner there's a little church. We saw a heron and lots of rabbits. was lovely

I hope the sun comes out for you.

Slubberdegullion · 15/07/2009 13:39

I'm going to be doing ALL of these things, even crappola pili Palace as the forecast is dire.

There is only so many times you can read Bambi to two small children in a wet tent before you start to have dark thoughts of the fire starting/knife through canvas rage type.

RemusLupinInAWizardsuit · 15/07/2009 22:23

Look, butterfly place is like many seaside nonsense 'tourist attractions': you have to get in the spirit of it.

It is basically a shed, with some butterflies and (as I recall) the odd bird and manky rabbit. But the experience of bright, iridescent blue butterflies landing on your child's nose and appreciating the length of fur difference between a Mongolian guinea pig and a Chilean hamster (or whatever ) is the important bit.

It is good that Britain has these non-slick places run by amateurs. It makes us distinctive and, um, British. The alternative is everything run to clockwork by Disney, McDonalds and Nickelodeon. Don't knock the nutters with sheds in their fields....

Ooooh. That's, like, almost a manifesto isn't it? I may have to start a separate thread on this matter of national importance.
