Anglesey in the rain: what is there to do?

Apart from the sea zoo thing and Canaerfon castle. We have done those already as day trips from the Lleyn.

We have a 4 and a 5 year old (dds) so anything involving soft fluffy animals, bunnies, ponies etc etc.

Indoor play hell holes centres as well, but nice ones. Nothing attached to a brewsters fair thankyouverymuch.

Oh and a GOOD family pub recommendation too please.

thankyooooooooou

oo ooo oo oo, ask me, ask me!

The greenwood centre (near caernarven?) is fabulous. Ace fun. It is outdoors so better if dry but GO.

Around 5 years ago we went to Henblas farm park and it was the best farm park we have been to. The farmer was a hoot - he sheared the sheep (with electric machine and with old-fashioned shears too, most educational) and he did a brilliant display of rounding up runner ducks with sheepdogs over an obstacle course. Fabulous. I will check if it still exists. Wonder if the farmer still leads the show.

If you go to criccieth castle, go to cadwaladrs ice cream parlour (as recommended by moondog). Gorgeous views out of huge window over the sea and a most excellent menu of ice cream sundaes to choose ffrom. Great for a rainy day.

If you get a nice day, I'd recommend Porth Dafarch beach on Anglesey. beatiful. bay shaped, great for paddling and for a bit of mild rock-pooling, ice cream van parked nearby and toilets up by the road

pointydog · 15/07/2009 23:43

slate mine - is it at Llanberis? Somehting to do if it rains. It's very cold, dark and damp but you;re under cover for most of it

pointydog · 15/07/2009 23:44

Conwy is beautiful. At the harbour, there is the smallest house in Wales. It's a bit of a tourist gimmick I think but it is exceptionally cute and interesting for small children and adults alike. About 5 years ago, it only cost £1 to stick your head in and nose around. I mena, it'll take you all of 10 minutes max. Conwy Castle. Fantastic deli.

pointydog · 15/07/2009 23:49

Llechwedd mines

fortyplus · 15/07/2009 23:50

'Electric Mountain' Dinorwic at Llanberis is super cool. You and dh will find it fascinationg and even your young dcs will love driving on a coach right into the heart of a mountain!

fortyplus · 15/07/2009 23:52

It's going to be really heavy rain on Fri but sunny on Sat by the way - hope you'll still be there for that. DS1 is going to Bala with friends on Fri

moondog · 15/07/2009 23:59

You well Slubber?

Good suggestions here.

You can also go to South Stack lighthouse and RSPB reserve.

Redwharf Bay (on east side) is lovely and has a great pub and ice cream shop.

We like Hooton's pick your own and farm shop (just after Plas Newydd). The Sea Zoo is near there too. I'm not so keen but some people like it.

There's a good art gallery outside of llangefni with a cafe and shop selling local stuff.

Kids will love Llanfairpwllgwyn........
A shithole but fun to see the long signs.

Beaumaris is lovely, castle and jail good to visit as is the Bull pub. Drive a bit further on to Penmon point where there is a ruined monastery and dovecote and great views.

pointydog · 16/07/2009 00:08

here is hen blas On anglesey.

and here's moondog to save you

moondog · 16/07/2009 00:28

pointy, did i really recommend cadwalladers to you?
that must have been a while back.

geekgirl · 16/07/2009 09:43

I have to say - I went to Pili Palas at Easter this year and it was proper SHITE - expensive shite to boot - we paid £20odd for all of us and just felt crappily fleeced afterwards.

We were lucky with the weather so not sure about indoor attractions - Plas Newydd was lovely though and should offer some entertainment to preschoolers, ds is 5 and enjoyed it. Conwy Castle is also supposed to be nice.

geekgirl · 16/07/2009 09:44

The Mountain Zoo at Conwy (I think?) is very nice btw, if you're heading back that way and the weather is ok....

pointydog · 16/07/2009 09:49

yes, moondog. I was going to visit my sister in N Wales last summer and wanted to know about more things to do in teh lleyn area. You gave loads of suggestions. You're only on mn to talk about wales and food these days

Slubberdegullion · 16/07/2009 14:34

Oh pointy you have excelled yourself here

Hi moony, very well thank you. We set forth on a 2 week Anglesey/lleyn combo on Saturday. I may even try and find your fish man or at least keep the family going on the annual hunt to find the mythical ?moondog?s crab man?.

Right I?m going to c&p all these suggestions and then put it in a wipe clean plastic folder. Dh will be supremely impressed.

yes, haven't I. I've been waiting for ages for you to notice

pointydog · 16/07/2009 14:48

(don't be tempted by portmeirion. It's not that good in the sunshine, never mind the rain)

Slubberdegullion · 16/07/2009 14:55

sorry thank you again.

I like port merion. It gives me the creeps in a healthy kind of way. beautiful cammelias last time we went (easter)

I have a very comprehensive printed list now. Thanks to all the reccomenders.

OP posts:
GrimmaTheNome · 16/07/2009 15:05

How about you paste your resulting list back in so that others N Wales-bound can print it off too? Pretty please?

DarrellRivers · 16/07/2009 16:11

Can't believe I missed this thread
We used to holiday every summer at my granny's house in Llanrug
We went to pillis palas if it rained
I think it had only just opened when we went
Were there lots of sea creatures there as well? or was that another attraction
Cadwalladers icecream, yum
The electricity place
The slate mine
Gelert's grave
(oh the memories)
We are returning to North West Wales this summer, so am preparing myself for lots of similar type excursions

pointydog · 16/07/2009 16:44

darryl, my sister lives in llanrug!

pointydog · 16/07/2009 16:45

hem, darrell

DarrellRivers · 16/07/2009 17:05

Oh wow, pointy dog
I [heart] llanrug
High point of my holiday was once walking through Llanrug to the shop and local car stopping and asking us for directions.
They thought we were locals
I was very proud
My gran lived in Upper Lodge to Bryn Bras castle

pointydog · 16/07/2009 17:09

There's a castle in llanrug?!

I have visited twice now. Have not seen castle. Have seen londis, fish n chip shop, park

DarrellRivers · 16/07/2009 17:12

It's here
On the road out of llanrug towards the old llanberis pass and the caravan park
It was built by an american as a folly I think rather than a bona fide castle
