Airport security discarded ALL my frozen expressed milk before our flight

During security screening, approximately 25 ounces of my frozen expressed breast milk was confiscated and discarded. I was told that because it was frozen, it could not be tested and therefore could not be taken through security.

I explained several times that this milk was for my 8-month-old daughter, who is unable to latch and is exclusively fed expressed breast milk. This was not simply a drink or an inconvenience, it was my daughter's only prepared source of nutrition for our journey. Despite explaining this, I was told there was nothing that could be done, and I had to stand there and watch as the milk was thrown away.

I cannot put into words how upsetting this was. Expressing 25 ounces of breast milk takes an enormous amount of time, dedication and physical effort. It means pumping throughout the day and night, carefully storing every bottle and planning ahead. Every ounce represents hours of work. To have it thrown away in front of me, after explaining exactly how important it was, was absolutely heartbreaking.

What made the situation even worse was the attitude of the officers involved. Throughout the interaction, I felt they showed very little empathy or understanding of how serious this was. I was clearly distressed and repeatedly explained that they were taking away my baby's only food for our journey. Rather than trying to help, showing compassion or explaining whether there were any alternative screening options, my concerns were simply dismissed.

After my daughter's food had been thrown away, I was handed a customer feedback card and sent on my way. It genuinely felt as though nobody cared that an 8-month-old baby had just lost the only food I had prepared for her. The complete lack of compassion shown towards me as a mother was deeply upsetting and made an already distressing situation even worse.

Instead of looking forward to our holiday, I boarded an international flight feeling anxious and devastated, worrying about how I was going to feed my daughter while we were away. No parent should ever be put in that position.

Before travelling, I checked the guidance available to passengers. Ryanair's website clearly states that parents travelling with an infant can bring as much baby milk as needed for the flight, provided it is presented for inspection. I relied on this information when preparing for our journey. At no point was I made aware that frozen expressed breast milk could be refused because it could not be tested, and I was given no alternative option when I reached security.

I do not know the names of the officers involved, but im sure they can be identified through CCTV footage and staff rosters for the security checkpoint.
I want Manchester Airport to provide a full explanation of why my daughter's expressed breast milk was confiscated.
The specific policy or security procedure that required it to be discarded.
An explanation of why no alternative screening method. The time and physical effort it took to express and store it, and the significant distress, anxiety and disruption this caused to both me and my family.im supposed to enjoy my holiday and now im stressed in morroco about how I will feed her. She doesnt latch and only has expressed milk. Besides complaining to the Airport what else can I do so no other family goes through this.

I breastfed both my DC but I also gave them formula.
I don’t buy into the EBF way of thinking. My view is BF if and when you can, if not, use formula. Life’s too short to stress about this stuff.

That’s great for you Smile

I didn't mention women travelling or not though. I made a completely different point. And I didn't even say she was in the right, nor that she should have made a fuss or should get some sort of refund, so you can can your snootiness and your false sense of superiority.

Snooty.....its not the 70's love and this is not Beano. If you read your comment you will see your generalisation quite clearly.

How can you not follow what is a very clear post?

It says in the OP that she expresses her breast milk to feed her baby. That is what she was “planning to feed her,” - maybe re-read it again if you are unclear?

And in her OP she says this

Instead of looking forward to our holiday, I boarded an international flight feeling anxious and devastated, worrying about how I was going to feed my daughter while we were away. No parent should ever be put in that position.

Presumably she wrote this because she was over egging the pudding and exaggerating the sheer impossibility of her child being fed. But thats why posters are asking these questions.

SwedishEdith · 12/07/2026 13:56

This is actually a great advert for Manchester airport - their security staff take security seriously.

mashandgravy · 12/07/2026 14:08

OP that sounds like such a distressing experience. Even if it is their policy not to allow frozen breastmilk through checks, it seems like the officers were unnecessarily hostile and unhelpful. I really hope someone is held accountable for this shitty treatment. Don't let it ruin your holiday x

What should they have done?

Whattheduck · 12/07/2026 14:21

ThatCyanCat · 12/07/2026 14:17

What should they have done?

They are probably fed up of people not doing their research before they fly and then expecting security to make an exception when the rules are in place for a reason

mashandgravy · 12/07/2026 14:22

ThatCyanCat · 12/07/2026 14:17

What should they have done?

Lol. Treated OP with kindness and compassion? Explained their policy while demonstrating understanding and offering support for an alternative if possible? Or should we assume a distressed mother trying to feed her infant is automatically a terrorist

Compassion for what? For being an idiot?

They did their job.

Whats the alternative?

But equally should we assume that a woman with a distressed baby isn’t a terrorist?

EyerollSeriously · 12/07/2026 14:31

Soontobe60 · 12/07/2026 09:19

So presumably she had a pump with her so could have expressed enough milk for a feed?

Pumping usually isn’t as effective as feeding a baby directly. Most mothers need to pump more than once for one feed. That’s why they work hard to build up a reserve and why it’s heartbreaking to lose any built up supply.

You don’t sound particularly sympathetic.

This is just unnecessarily rude. OP did check the rules but clearly missed this one and is upset, pumping is hard work. You can tell her that unfortunately it was her mistake and security were in the right without being an utter tosser, it’s not that hard to not be nasty.

Aligirlbear · 12/07/2026 14:40

I’m sorry this has happened to you but security can’t make any exceptions regardless of the situation and the guidelines clearly state liquid. Sadly they have to deal with any number of “but my situation is different / reasons why I should be exempted from the rules”

Unfortunately this situation, regardless of how upsetting, is due to your oversight on you not fully reading and understanding the rules.

Nadsthakur · 12/07/2026 14:40

StampOnTheGround · 12/07/2026 02:20

I’m sorry I know how upsetting that would have been, and how much effort goes into pumping.

However with airport security, no rules can be bent for any reason, it doesn’t seem fair to you at the moment and I get it, but they didn’t have a choice.

As you’ll have seen from others, the guidance is clearly written too. You cannot make a complaint, you already have the clear reasons as to why it was confiscated, as horrible as it is, it is your fault, a quick google would have told you no in seconds.

I hope you manage to express enough but if not, a little bit of formula won’t hurt (well formula completely wouldn’t hurt). It is better she is fed.

I hope you have a lovely holiday.

Yh I just went by what ryanair said and didnt check what the actual airport says. 😐 and thank you x

I don't get the joke. They did explain the policy. Finding alternatives is not their problem. They have a lot of people to process and a lot of planes to keep safe. (You don't think the queues are long enough?) They do not have the staff or time to coddle and personally satisfy every person who, for whatever reason, tries to bring aboard forbidden items. What could they have done that would have adhered to the safety regulations and not left OP in any distress at all? Sat with her for 40 minutes with tea, biscuits and hugs while the queue gets longer and longer with still more people with forbidden items waiting for their own tea, biscuits and cuddles?

Sorry op this is absolutely ridiculous and pointless security theatre.

I agree with you, but also, these are the rules, and they aren’t hidden. Expecting to be the exception will never work.

GreenAlgae · 12/07/2026 14:59

Is an obvious mum carrying a baby with small bottles REALLY like to be a terrorist??!

Well . . . that's what they want you to think, innit?

I asked what the compassion was for? She hadnt been attacked, in an accident, suffered a health problem, she hadnt suffered at their hands or anyone elses hands.

So what for?

Bearing in mind as I said earlier, they're not friggin counsellors.

It seems that OP wouldn’t accept the word no, by her own admission she repeatedly told them it was her DDs only form of nutrition. No the first time should’ve been sufficient!

You don’t get to change the rules, security do not waiver, no wonder it escalated.

You called her an idiot. Absolutely uncalled for. She read the Ryanair information but not the airport - it’s a simple mistake and she was distressed by the outcome of that. Your attitude is unpleasant.

ETA sometimes you don’t need a reason to be compassionate towards another human who is struggling. Sometimes, it’s just nice to be a decent person and say ‘hey, sorry you experienced that but these are the rules,
hope things don’t turn out too badly’. You don’t need to resort to name calling and patronising messages to a distressed person.
