Is £230 enough spending money to go to Cornwall for 5 days?

Going to Cornwall for Feb half term. Booked a lovely caravan which was very cheap owing it to it still being out of season. Going to St Ives.

Everything is booked and paid for, including all activities. Over the last 6 months i have been booking things slowly. Biggest expense really will be a food shop and petrol (I need to pay for return journey petrol from this money too).
Should that be enough?

I knew about Flambards, used to go there as a kid, very sad. I get nervous every time I go to the Porthcurno Telegraph Museum (now re-named Museum of Global Communications I think) - I buy pretty much every hoody or blanket they sell to try and keep them going! The delightful John Packer once took my kids into the bowels of that building and showed them the most amazing equipment that's not on display, I think he's the only one old enough to know how it all works!

The Seal Sanctuary at Gweek is another great place, I think their funding is secure as they're part of the Sea Life Trust.

There are so many golden spots in west Cornwall.

Dairyland has shut up too, although I think the indoor soft play has reopened and there's a farm shop there now. Crealy is about the only theme park left in Cornwall now, I wonder how they're doing?

MascalPascal · 19/02/2025 13:24

We decided go to Cornwall Gold. DD is pottery painting currently (could only stretch to her doing it) and she's very pleased 😀

I’m so pleased you’ve had a wonderful holiday! Hayle is one of my favourite places, I took my children for the first time last year.

You are an incredible mum and I hope you feel very proud of yourself x

Saggyknickers · 19/02/2025 14:08

Flambards also now gone and the Victorian Village exhibits up for auction soon

Oh that's sad - and dairy land too? My dc's have great memories of those places - i remember them being creeped out by the Victorian museum!

Sounds like a perfect last day OP - wishing you a safe journey home x

Unfortunately Heartlands is all closed now after their funding went

Edited

This is so sad. I went the first year it opened with my toddler dd and lots of times since (including when they were doing some cbeebies filming there). It was really nicely done. Such as shame it's gone after such a short time.

Ooh was that Mr Bloom? We were there 😊

It was opened via lottery funding but never made much income and crippled by utility fees, according to the council.

Yes! It was in a baking hot marquee!

Hope you enjoy your last evening in Cornwall OP, and have a safe and easy journey back home. Your thread has been so uplifting x

MascalPascal · 19/02/2025 18:47

Thanks everyone. We've got a chocolate making workshop tomorrow at I should coco. I booked it for DD then heading back home.

It's absolutely lashing down at the moment!

I'm debating whether to book up for next Feb half term as you get 20% discount if you book within 2 weeks of your stay, looking at a basic chalet which is quite cheap but I know I'd miss the washing machine! It's been a godsend! No holiday laundry for us tomorrow!

Has anyone ever stayed in a chalet/value chalet and what's it like? I've only ever booked caravans when we've gone away.

Can I ask where you stayed op?

We've been going to St Ives for 10 years but have never stayed in Hayle.

MascalPascal · 19/02/2025 19:04

We stayed at St Ives Beach, the away resorts site. It's really lovely. Everything is closed as its out of season but we were able to use a swimming pool at another holiday park and there's a big lidl, Asda and Tesco nearby too. We are literally on the beach too. Our caravan is beautiful. There's a washing machine and dishwasher. Two bathrooms, two bedrooms. Large kitchen and dining area and outside decking. It's toasty warm in the evenings too. Highly recommend.

Thank you. We've stayed in apartments with Carbis Bay holidays but they can be pricey. We've camped at Trevalgan and Polmanter too which are both fab sites.

I've loved reading this thread especially as St Ives is my happy place. Really fancy a caravan holiday now.

Hazylazydays · 19/02/2025 19:08

I think as you’ve enjoyed your accommodation so much, I’d stick with it.
Maybe it would be possible to look in on one of the chalets before you leave to help you decide.

I stayed in one of the value chalets but about 12 years ago. They are not particularly luxurious (a bit tatty but may have been updated) and the single beds were really narrow. Nearby there is also Tom's Cabins which are a real mixture of accommodation- many privately owned which you can rent from the owners via the website. I've used them before and so have various friends. There are some play areas on that site but not very much else. May be worth a look though as good value.

I think the Cornish tourist board should be putting up @MascalPascal for free next year. I’m sure we’re all dying to go to Cornwall now! Enjoy the rest of your trip.

EcruCardigan · 19/02/2025 20:20

Thinking about it, I went on a caravan holiday with my grandmother and cousin when I was about 7. It was great.

Floralnomad · 19/02/2025 20:30

Sounds like you had a really lovely stay @MascalPascal glad it all worked out well for you both .

YogaLite · 19/02/2025 21:15

Oooh, I do like awayresorts too🙂
Stayed in one park where we had a view of the Godrevy lighthouse 3 years ago.
Glad u had a nice break OP.

Your trip and updates has enhanced a lot of people's mental health in this cold and drear time of year. Many thanks

MascalPascal · 21/02/2025 09:18

Ah. We miss Cornwall so much.

We've booked up to go to St Ives again next February half term. Got a discount for booking up again.. managed to get 5 nights for under £200.

We have 7 days there also next Easter (all paid for now) so will get to go twice next year.

Definitely have the Cornwall bug!!

Consider what you would have spend had you stayed at home and look at the difference. At home, you would be buying food and petrol and using the heating. £230 on top seems like a lot in that context

I think you're missing the point; I'm sure OP is aware that never taking a holiday would save lots of money! Have you RTFT? She has managed to give her and her daughter a really fantastic holiday with her thoughtfulness and fantastic budgeting and organisational skills. On top of that she has warmed the cockles of my heart and loads of other MNs!

I'm so glad you've been bitten by the Cornwall bug! Such an incredible place. You've got me pricing up holidays now, I need to go back 😅

MascalPascal · 21/02/2025 11:13

For anyone interested..I didn't overspend and returned with £10 😆. I managed a food shop, one small top up shop, a couple of gift shop treats for DD, booked a pottery painting activity, fish and chips one evening and a budget lunch at the services yesterday and because I had half a tank of petrol left in Cornwall I only had to fill up £35. The full tank got me all the way home with 74 miles left. I saved a lot of miles on the long stretches of motorway!
