Is £230 enough spending money to go to Cornwall for 5 days?

Going to Cornwall for Feb half term. Booked a lovely caravan which was very cheap owing it to it still being out of season. Going to St Ives.

Everything is booked and paid for, including all activities. Over the last 6 months i have been booking things slowly. Biggest expense really will be a food shop and petrol (I need to pay for return journey petrol from this money too).
Should that be enough?

Are you going for a swim?😀

So glad you are having a great time. Hope journey down was okay. Where did you end up having your breaks?

It was ok. The last 100 miles at the bodmin/Okehampton turn off were never ending 😅. We got here when it was dark so was beautiful to wake up in the morning and see we were right on the seafront x

Thank you for the lovely comments:)

We've had a lovely first proper day. Went to the beach (which was breathtaking).

Went to Ayr holiday park to use the pool. Having some lunch at the caravan now and then going to Base Camp to do the clip and climb and I booked tickets for DD to see a taylor swift tribute act tonight at Hall for Cornwall (We've seen her a few times she's spectacular!) Can't wait to see her face when she realises we're going again!

Having such a lovely time xxx

I’m so glad you’re both having a great time. Memories don’t need to cost a lot of money.
Time is the most valuable thing that you can give to your children and in that respect you are splashing out.

We've arrived in St Ives :) staying in Hayle.
I was pleasantly surprised how economical fuel consumption was on the motorway. I would've made it all the way here on a full tank easily but didn't chance it and popped in £20. Spent £35 in Tesco and have earmarked £50/60 for the return journey. Whatever is left is our spends and tbh I'm OK with it. I came here for quality time with DD. Everything is booked and paid for and we'll have a lovely time:))

One good thing for future would be to get a national trust membership for you both (you can pay monthly) and then you have lots of ‘free’ days out. We often book holidays where we know there are lots of NT properties and take a pack up.

ginasevern · 16/02/2025 16:29

Thanks for the lovely photo OP! That's given me quite a lift. I'm so glad you and your DD are having a great time. It's reminded me of my little holidays when my son was young (I was a single parent too). We did inexpensive things but it made me more creative and hands-on, and we always had a wonderful time.

tonyhawks23 · 16/02/2025 16:47

Whole beach to yourselves is the best!!

TheChosenTwo · 16/02/2025 18:25

We’ve spent many happy holidays in Hayle, our friend owned one of the other side of the road to the caravan park and let us stay in it for nothing, was a godsend when our dc were little.
It’s absolutely beautiful and we have often had the beach pretty much to ourselves, it’s huge!
not sure we’ve ever been in Feb but have definitely had some rainy May half terms down there. Equally though we’ve been blessed with sun for lots of the times we’ve been there.
Have a wonderful time 🥳

And you sound as if you don't like to have a good time, and begrudge others having fun as well. FWIW I don't 'drink a lot of cocktails', I like the odd drink on holiday, and I don't stint myself on quality, either. I spend more on shopping than on booze anyway.

That poster begrudges kids anything, she constantly posts to be negative about them. Kids should get hardly anything, it’s all about the adults with her and she is always advising people to leave their kids, focus on themselves and spend their money on Prosecco and cocktails with the girls, She sounds bitter to me. She used to lie about having children on here as well. Very weird.

It's been a really great first day ☺️

Taylormania at Hall for Cornwall was brilliant!

Ahh OP I'm thrilled for you! Prepare to fall completely in love with the area, I've never found anywhere quite like it ❤️

Loved this thread, you have got so much fun stuff booked and 7 is a perfect age for enjoying it, you sound a brilliant mum with everything covered, well done and enjoy the break 😍

BoldAmberDuck · 17/02/2025 00:03

This is such a lovely post. Your daughter is very very lucky to have such a nice Mum. Have a great time x

CornishDew · 17/02/2025 15:01

Hope you have a a great time in the Cornish lands! There’s several play areas well hidden around Eden project, the best one is behind the discovery type centre building and a simple one upstairs in there in case the weather turns.

ValentineValentineV · 17/02/2025 15:17

This thread reminds me of a £10 Sun newspaper holiday I did with my DS in Somerset. He still talks about visiting Mr BlobbyLand and didn’t seem to notice there wasn’t much spare money floating around.

I hope you have a lovely rest of your holiday, your DC is very lucky to have a lovely mum.

Can I just point out (for everyone, not just the OP), that booking via things like GetYourGuide and similar mean you end up paying a lot more than going direct to the company or experience provider. This damn things are starting to try and dominate the market and it benefits no one except them. You always get a better price by booking direct.

EcruCardigan · 17/02/2025 15:34

Thanks for pointing it out. I wouldn't book through a third-party without checking direct with the event.

Yes, Get Your Guide seems to be the 'days out' equivalent to Uber, Deliveroo etc. Completely unnecessary and just there to take a cut from the provider as well as increase the price for the customer. Just why?

Only just caught this thread, but a bit of advice- the petrol may be cheaper in Devon atm. I'm in North Cornwall, and the local BP garage is £1.40. If you're travelling home on a30, Whitehouse Services in Okehampton is £1.36(?). And obviously supermarkets petrol prices are generally cheaper. Hope you both have a great holiday, and managed to catch the sun this evening! Polzeath beach is nice, lots of rock pools, can park on the beach and has a cafe on the beach too. Also driving across Bodmin Moor and seeing the animals roaming is always exciting for the youngsters!

PZ Tesco is 131.9 per litre currently. I've not seen cheaper anywhere!

EcruCardigan · 17/02/2025 15:40

Oh well. At least my completely crap attempt to help has raised this point.Smile

Love this. Hope you continue to have a wonderful time.

Cornwall is beautiful your dd will gave memories to treasure forever.

This. It sounds great. You seem a great mother @MascalPascal . Your photo of St Ives was so different from my memory of desperately seeking a parking space in peak season and giving up. We went to a different beach, which was not what why we had planned.

MascalPascal · 17/02/2025 16:31

We are having such a lovely second day here.
Had a very long early morning stroll on the beach, collected various shells and rocks, then went to Paradise park and DD let off some steam in the jungle barn. Picked up some whipped cream and mini marshmallows from Asda to have hot chocolate later on. Going to have a yummy tea (spaghetti and meatballs) then go and watch a Feb half term pantomime :)
DD keeps asking how many days we have left and keeps saying she doesn't want to go back yet.. I've definitely found somewhere we will come again 😊.

This sounds so lovely! Porthkidney beach is near where you are and is fab for collecting sea glass. It may even be the beach opposite where you're staying if I recall correctly.
