Is £230 enough spending money to go to Cornwall for 5 days?

MascalPascal · 14/02/2025 09:03

Going to Cornwall for Feb half term. Booked a lovely caravan which was very cheap owing it to it still being out of season. Going to St Ives.

Everything is booked and paid for, including all activities. Over the last 6 months i have been booking things slowly. Biggest expense really will be a food shop and petrol (I need to pay for return journey petrol from this money too).
Should that be enough?

Aww, so glad you're having a lovely time OP - I love st.Ives so much, we go every year. I've just booked for Easter. We still always go to paradise park/Newquay zoo etc even though the kids are older now 😝

Taylormania looks amazing - what a lucky dd you have! Enjoy the rest of your stay x

NeedToAskPlease · 17/02/2025 20:26

If you're there on a Saturday ... Eden Project has free entry for those who do parkrun.

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/02/2025 09:44

late to this thread so know you are there and having lovely time. Pics look lovely

fwiw yes some said a tight budget ;they spend that in a day ) but you have planned and paid for activities

I think budget is fine - you have food. Petrol and activities to do

you will be making lovely memories for dd and best thing she can do is have time with her mum having a best holiday 💖

maltravers · 18/02/2025 10:00

It sounds like a wonderful holiday. Well done mum!

PZ Tesco is 131.9 per litre currently. I've not seen cheaper anywhere!

We're close to Tintagel, so it would be not worth the trip, but thank you for this- good to know for when I'm next near PZ!

MascalPascal · 18/02/2025 17:53

Hi everyone.

We're on day 3 of our lovely little trip..we did the obligatory beach visit, went to the Eden Project and met Paddington and now having a lovely chippy tea in St Austell before watching another Feb half term pantomime. DD loved the Panto yesterday, was a lot of fun.

I have £120 still left and 1.5 days to go..£60 of that will be petrol and feel happy I've budgetted well. Managed a few treats for DD, couple of gift shop things and an ice cream. I have leftover bolognese for tomorrow's dinner. We have a fairly relaxed day tomorrow. Have a crafts thing for DD tomorrow and was going to go to Tehidy Country park for a wonder. DD wants to spend our last night snuggled up on the sofa in our caravan watching Paddington so that's what we'll do :)
So glad I was able to bring DD to Cornwall. I've already booked up again for next Easter and slowly paying it off each month, we'll have 7 days there next time and can't wait.

Awww 🥰
You’ve caught the Cornwall bug OP - if I don’t go at least once a year I get homesick, and it’s not even my home 😂 it’s the most beautiful place isn’t it? Next time you go plan in Newquay zoo, fistral beach (the headland hotel is there where the witches was filmed), Tintagel and the Minack theatre. There’s so much to do though - we’ve been going for 10 years and there’s still loads of places we haven’t been.

So glad you and your dd have enjoyed it, sounds like you’ve had a wonderful time.

Hey OP, I dont know why but your post and this whole thread has really boosted my mood and I felt compelled to write a note, I’m not even sure what to say other than you’ve inspired me.

I hope the last couple of days of your holiday is as lovely as the first few have been x

Hazylazydays · 18/02/2025 20:16

I think this post has been like a breath of fresh air on Mumsnet, so pleased you’ve had a good time OP.

EcruCardigan · 18/02/2025 20:22

like a breath of fresh air I agree. 10/10 @MascalPascal .
You've planned and budgeted carefully, been mindful of what your DC wanted, been polite, friendly and courteous, posted photos, kept us updated, and inspired us.
What a smashing MNer.

MascalPascal · 18/02/2025 20:50

You guys are so lovely 😍 .. I'm really glad I posted this thread and got such great advice. I always say to DD as long as I can then I will, I don't want to get in unnecessary debt just to fund a holiday which is why I planned what I could. DD knows that I'll always do the best that I can and that everything I do is for her ♥️. I'm really thankful she's a great and appreciative little girl and is quite happy spending a few days in Cornwall in a caravan with her mummy ♥️.

And why wouldn't she? It sounds perfect!

Wineaddict · 18/02/2025 21:39

Loving your updates OP - what a lovely, upbeat thread.
This is one of the nicest I’ve read on here.
Enjoy the rest of your holiday making lovely memories with your daughter.

L0bstersLass · 19/02/2025 00:50

@MascalPascal Your holiday sounds wonderful.
I'm so impressed with how careful you've been with your budgeting so that you don't get into a pickle, and with the way that you've pre-booked and paid for a thoughtful variety of treats.
It's lovely to hear that your little girl is having such a great time with you.
You sound like a great mum.

oddandelsewhere · 19/02/2025 01:09

I 'm so glad you're having a lovely time, you both deserved it x

Hi everyone. It's our last full day in Cornwall today .. sad!

Just took DD to a crafts this morning in Redruth.

Going to have a fairly relaxed day I think. If anyone has any low key recommendations in and around the Redruth area then do let me know :)

Cornwall Gold centre - have a free mooch around the old workings, and do some 'gold panning'.

Have a lovely day!

Yes I'd agree with @Fencehedge about Cornwall Gold, there's a nice atmos there. There's also Heartlands at Pool which has a massive free adventure playground. The cafe is nice, not the cheapest but not ridiculously pricey, there's a soft play too now though I think that's chargeable. They often have free activities in school holidays, crafting or treasure trails etc. There's a big Tesco right next door if you need any last supplies. Enjoy your last day @MascalPascal 🙂

Good grief - when did that happen? I'm trying to think when we were last there...I'm not sure we went last year now my kids are teens...come to think of it we might not have gone the year before either. Time moves on and you don't notice 🤔

We started visiting in 2006 not long after it opened, it was run by two wonderful young women who were graduates from the Camborne School of Mines. They had the most amazing art house film of the Cornish mining industry made by local independent filmmakers, the sounds and images were some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. But they couldn't afford to have it recorded, it just played on a loop from a projector. One day it bluescreened and they could never retrieve it. I have it recorded in sections on my old iPad and they used to tell me I possibly had the only evidence of it in existence.

The huge space that became a soft play used to be incredibly peaceful too. My Autistic boy used to spend time in there just looking at the few exhibits. I remember turning up one year and it was bedlam in there once the soft play was fitted!

I'd always worried about their funding, I remember when the initial money ran out and they made changes to try and put it on a firmer footing. The Red River Cafe always seemed to be doing well, though the small retail outlets around the edge of the redevelopment never really took off. What a shame, what a loss to the local area.

It is a shame, closed over a year ago.

Flambards also now gone and the Victorian Village exhibits up for auction soon.

I knew about Flambards, used to go there as a kid, very sad. I get nervous every time I go to the Porthcurno Telegraph Museum (now re-named Museum of Global Communications I think) - I buy pretty much every hoody or blanket they sell to try and keep them going! The delightful John Packer once took my kids into the bowels of that building and showed them the most amazing equipment that's not on display, I think he's the only one old enough to know how it all works!

The Seal Sanctuary at Gweek is another great place, I think their funding is secure as they're part of the Sea Life Trust.

There are so many golden spots in west Cornwall.
