Whereabouts to stay in Edinburgh?

I’m planning on taking DS to Edinburgh for a few nights post GCSEs. I’ve only ever been once, for the festival, and have no memory of where we stayed! Plenty of good memories of the trip though.

Happy to have an apartment or a hotel (twin room) but would like to be as close as possible to where the action is as we will do all the touristy things.

What is the new town like? Too much of a jaunt into the centre or completely fine? There seem to be more apartments in that area than hotels.

New town is fine as long as near Prince's Street. The hop on hop off tour bus leaves from st Andrews square. The Royal Mile and Castle will be a 15 minute+ walk, National Museum a little further.

mil stayed there when she visited Edinburgh and thought for the price it was excellent. It’s literally got royal mile to the back or princes street to the front so couldn’t get much more central.

they have opened a roomzzz in the new shopping centre at the end of princes street apparently.
i haven’t stayed in that one but have in the Newcastle location a couple of times and was happy both stays.

New Town is fine. I don't know why more people don't have it on their itinerary actually. I mean, it's not exactly new, being Adam and all that. Stunning Georgian architecture.

Both look great, but unfortunately only king sized beds in each and DS is a wriggler so we’d need a bed each.

I will bear the Roomzzz in mind for other locations though, thank you.

I think I’m going to go with an air bnb two bed apartment in new town which is coming in at about £1000. It sounds a lot for two people self catering for four nights, but all hotels are much more for twin beds, even without breakfast.

ye I think it’s a good call. It’ll give you more space and you’ll be able to keep some milk in the fridge and have a few meals like breakfast and the like at “home”

When we were looking for mil we found Edinburgh expensive too but I suppose it is the capital city so it’s Scotlands equivalent of London.

Will you be driving / need to park and are you going in the festival?

Not sure when GCSEs end but I just popped 4 nights at the end of June into Premier Inn and they have 4 nights in a twin room coming in at under £600

I stayed in the Waverly Premier Inn on Rose Street last year with my son. Very convenient, M&S, Sainsburys very close for lunch food though we find if you take full advantage of the breakfast and take some fruit and a muffin we don't spend much on lunch, if anything.

We always stay at the Travelodge in the old town, St Marys St, 5 min walk from the station and just at the bottom of the mile and in walking distance of everything

My friends stayed at the Roomzzz recently.
Friend looked online them called them directly as also wanted a twin rather than a double, got set up with some sort of membership thing (not sure what is was) which gave a discount and arranged for the room to be set up as a twin room. Friends thought it was great, really good value for money.

We've stayed here quite a few times..it's a bit further out than you've said but a few minutes walk to both the train and tram into town. It's quite near a retail park as well with an Aldi, tesco and other shops if you want to get food for lunches etc

The room had a small kitchen area which would have been useful had their stay been longer .

The biggest question in Edinburgh is do you need parking or are you coming by train / plane? If you need parking that really limits your options close to the city centre. What's your ideal budget and dates?

I don’t need parking, as we’re coming by train, and not in festival time

I would like to spend £1300 max on four nights, not including breakfast, and we would need a twin room in a hotel or a two bed apartment

the central premier inn is sold out on our dates, unfortunately. We’ve stayed in loads of premier inns and they’ve always been great. The premier inn by the airport is too far out for us really, we’d like to be more central if possible

the travelodge looks absolutely fine, and it’s well under budget, but I think I’d prefer to spend more as we’re staying for four nights and would spend more time there than we would if staying eg for two nights (I’m not at all snobbish, travelodge would normally suit us well)

our dates are 15-19 June in case anyone knows of any availability!

The Royal Highland show starts by Edinburgh airport on the 20th so I suspect prices and availability are being impacted by that as exhibitors will be on site for a few days before it opens. Could you shift your dates a bit?

Memberhip rate at Roomzzz is around £1,060 for 4 nights for those dates for a “smart studio”
and am sure they would set the rooms as a twin for you as they did for my friend if you called them. The rooms comes with some kitchen facilities and it couldn’t be more central and very new. Is also very close to the train starion.

Try the Adagio on Royal Mile. You can get flexible apartments with kitchenette. About 10 minutes from station.

on further research @ThinkingAgainAndAgain it is above a pub!?

Most of the reviews are 5 star but a few others have had issues wrt bedrooms.

Have a fantastic trip, it's a fabulous city.

The roomzzz studio as a twin would be great, I think it looks fantastic. I’m trying to work out whatever the air bnb which would give us separate bedrooms and a living room too, would be a better bet for us or whether we would prefer the very central location through roomzzz. DS is a very early riser and likes to go to bed relatively early (not your typical 16yo).
