Whereabouts to stay in Edinburgh?

I’m planning on taking DS to Edinburgh for a few nights post GCSEs. I’ve only ever been once, for the festival, and have no memory of where we stayed! Plenty of good memories of the trip though.

Happy to have an apartment or a hotel (twin room) but would like to be as close as possible to where the action is as we will do all the touristy things.

What is the new town like? Too much of a jaunt into the centre or completely fine? There seem to be more apartments in that area than hotels.

All advice appreciated!

on further research @ThinkingAgainAndAgain it is above a pub!?

Most of the reviews are 5 star but a few others have had issues wrt bedrooms.

Have a fantastic trip, it's a fabulous city.

Yes, being above a pub isn’t ideal, but I think we could probably live with it. I’d take the bedroom in the front where most of the noise would be. Toying between this and the roomzzz studio twin which is an amazing location for a couple of hundred pounds less.

Roomzz is on the top floor of the new and shiny (and ridiculously shaped) shopping centre which doesn’t sound great but actually is really good. He could go and potter around the centre for a while and leave you sleeping? There is also a terrace overlooking Calton Hill.

Try the Adagio on Royal Mile. You can get flexible apartments with kitchenette. About 10 minutes from station.

No availability, unfortunately, but it looks great

ah, he wakes at 6am every day. I probably won’t want to wake until about 7:30 or so. So not a massive lie in, but I’d imagine that the shopping centre wouldn’t be open! 6am is just too early for me to start my day!

You may find that a lot of hotels are booked up or more expensive than usual due to the royal highland show being on.

Fabulous location, I agree. Trying to work out whether we’d be better off staying in new town, and having an air bnb with separate bedrooms and a living space too, or a twin room in a prime location. It’s four nights, so maybe we’d appreciate that bit of extra space!

I hadn’t realised about the show, always good to know!

Have you got a link to the AirBnB?

Yes, it’s upthread

For the price of the AirBnB compared to being cramped into one hotel room with a single bed each I think I'd go for it! The location is really good and there's plenty of places to eat locally and a Tesco metro at the top of the road for supplies.

I think I agree. Good to know more about the location amenities, thank you.

Stayed at Apex Waterloo place recently. Very good location. Short walk from station. Everything within walking distance.

Air BnBs have ruined central Edinburgh. Stay in a hotel instead and don't encourage the money grabbing accommodation stealing bastards.

@ThinkingAgainAndAgain I think the Air BnB looks great! Broughton Street is a brilliant, central location. Even though there are pubs along there, it's not rowdy. There are also nice little restaurants too.
That's a busy roundabout in front, but no overly so. It would make a brilliant base and give you more space seeing as you are there for 4 nights.

I don’t need parking, as we’re coming by train, and not in festival time

I would like to spend £1300 max on four nights, not including breakfast, and we would need a twin room in a hotel or a two bed apartment

the central premier inn is sold out on our dates, unfortunately. We’ve stayed in loads of premier inns and they’ve always been great. The premier inn by the airport is too far out for us really, we’d like to be more central if possible

the travelodge looks absolutely fine, and it’s well under budget, but I think I’d prefer to spend more as we’re staying for four nights and would spend more time there than we would if staying eg for two nights (I’m not at all snobbish, travelodge would normally suit us well)

our dates are 15-19 June in case anyone knows of any availability!

Edited

We manage 3 nights in it not a bother

TBH we are rarely in it. Up, shower, out for breakfast, then the sight seeing starts. We grab a meal deal from Marks and sit in the gardens, cold doesnt bother us ( we are usually there in March or November ) then onwards and upwards, getting early dinner and a drink, then back to room, bath, bit of tv and lights out cos we have put in over 20k steps - rinse and repeat

The new restaurant and bar/lounge area will be open there as well now ( was still being refurbed when there in March ) and we have had a decent evening meal there in the past when too tired to decide where to go

For the central location - its perfect.
