Playing on the beach at woolacombe or Saunton Sands, usually in the rain in our cagoules!

Once spent an unforgettable day in Richmond Park with my mum, brother and some family friends, having a picnic, wading in the river near Roehampton Gate and buying a coke from the cafe. Such a simple day but such a happy memory.

There was a national trust castle where we always used to stop for lunch at on the way to our holiday in devon/cornwall. We would have our picnic and wander around the grounds for an hour or two. The gift shop had a particular smell, no idea what of but for me it was a smell I always associated with the beginning of a holiday.

Not sure if this counts but when I got to about aged 10ish I always loved it when we went on holiday and stayed in a village or near a seaside rather than the middle of nowhere (we always went to a self catering cottage in the West country or norfolk). I loved having the freedom to wander about on my own or with my sister, with 50p in our pockets to buy sweets and souvenirs.

Welsh Mountain zoo and Conwy Castle- lovely memories of both

bananafishbones1 · 06/06/2024 00:46

I had few days out as a child. Went to Southport and morecombe occasionally. But once a year my Aunt organised a big coach trip to Blackpool. Was the highlight of my year!

York Railway Museum and Eureka museum in Halifax. I cannot WAIT for our baby boy to be old enough to take!

A day at Filey, morning on the beach with a picnic, then afternoon wandering round in town until Inghams fish & chip restaurant opened for tea, calling at Wray's book shop to buy comics & books before heading down the hill to the amusement arcade on Coble Landing before going home.

Bowness and parts of the lake, but Bowness used to have a craft centre where you could use poker irons to draw and write on wooden things, spoons, keyrings etc. This was my favourite. I do have an iron of my own now, but it feels less fun when doing it without the rest of the stations where other people can work.

Bradgate Park in Leicestershire. Roaming about up the hill, picnic. Or similar days in the Yorkshire Dales, up on to the hills, us kids tearing about. Back down, sit by the river, or if winter in a steamy pub eating syrup pudding.

@TammyOne My dad used to take us to the viewing platform at Newcastle Airport and we would watch other people going on holiday. That was our holiday! In fact, if I ever go to the airport to actually get on a plane, I am amaaaaaaazed that I am getting to go for real 😅

Other favourites were when my mam would keep me off school on a sunny day so we could go and get on a bus (with her off-peak pass) and just end up somewhere random. There was a park that I loved with an outdoor pool and the highest and best swings and slides in the world. Or just to the beach to sit in the dunes all day and have sandy boiled eggs 😊

Morecambe had Frontierland but my absolute fave was Lightwater Valley and the hell slide

watchuswreckthemic · 06/06/2024 12:59

I didn't realise how much I missed Camelot till this thread!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 06/06/2024 13:03

To Dawlish on the train with my dad, swim in the sea, walk up through the park along by the river and a clotted cream topped ice cream cone!

We didn't have a car and went out very rarely, unless my dad was on a rest day and then he'd take my brother and I off to the beach.

marciaa · 06/06/2024 13:03

A drive out to the countryside which included walking and having a lovely mum-prepared picnic. Happy memories.

Aston Hall

It always seemed to be quiet, dark and atmospheric. The house used to have a heavy, dark, woody smell that seemed to hold thousands of memories and stories within it. Aston Hall made me fall in love with historic homes.

My dad grew up around that neck of the woods so we'd lock the car doors (it was rough as fuck around here in the 1990s) and drive around all his old haunts, and he'd tell me stories from his childhood. Then sometimes we'd go to the park nearby where they had a twisty covered slide that I was obsessed with. The novelty wore off after I launched myself down the slide once and crashed into a crack addict that was wedged into the twisty bit of the slide 😮

Then it was always McDonald's on the way home.

Aston Hall | Birmingham Museums

About Aston Hall Aston Hall has watched proudly over Birmingham for more than 400 years – not only is it one of the last great houses built in the Jacobean

Although we come from the south coast, still do, dad used to drive us to other beaches on days out in the 60s.

Witterings, Bournemouth, Poole, Hayling Island etc. We used to get really excited at the first glimpse of the Sea despite being 10 minutes from the beach at home.

Second favourite day out, visiting grandparents in Middlesex and going to Heathrow Airport and Queens Building to watch planes take off and land.

Those were the days ... 😁

Audley End
Brighton Pavilion

A sucker for a stately home me! Fired up my imagination. 😊

its2024 · 06/06/2024 13:31

Matlock Bath, would always go a for a walk in Derbyshire and end up in Matlock Bath for our picnic. Then walk into the town and go to the amusements and have fish and chips.

Using the empty trays, fork and paper to make a boat and me and my Dad would throw them in the river and see which one would win the race on the walk back to the car.
