Oh gosh does anyone remember The water palace in Croydon? Loved going there!

EarlofShrewsbury · 10/05/2024 00:08

Thought of another one.

My grandparents were in the RAF and got hospitality tickets to the Royal International Air Tattoo every year.

Loved that day out.

Wickstead Park then Alton Towers as I got tall enough to ride the big rides.

Derby baths, Blackpool.

To the airport to watch the planes taking off and landing. You can’t do this anymore, but back in the day the nearest airport had a massive 60s built cafeteria with swirly carpets, metal tea pots and a panoramic window taking up a whole wall, looking right onto the runways.
Anyone could go there, have a tea and a bun and marvel at the wonders of flight.
Magic.

Chatsworth House - most notably the adventure playground at the top of the hill. I probably only ever went a handful of times, but going there as an adult almost feels like going home!

Alton Towers ♥️

Honestly, my favourites were parks with plenty of rides and an ice-cream van! We went to loads of castles, stately homes, mountain treks, forest walks, and toured Europe. But I really enjoyed simple days out at parks, playing with the siblings and any other available kids.

I can remember what they now call wild swimming in some beautiful locations. But you need hot weather and I think it's quite tough on parents.

KohlaParasaurus · 16/05/2024 19:23

Culzean Castle
Fruit picking excursions with my grandparents, who knew where all the best wild raspberries and currants were to be found and whose picnics were far better than the ones Mum and Dad gave us.
Leadhills, to run wild and swim in the river.

Child Beale Trust at Pangbourne. Extra points if it was warm enough for the paddling pool to be open.

LittleGreenDuck · 16/05/2024 21:06

Or Bournemouth beach. We'd travel by train and always had an ice cream to keep us going on the long walk back to the station at the end of the day.

SuffolkUnicorn · 16/05/2024 21:13

Didn’t go anywhere apart from the local parks occasionally my mum never took us anywhere hence why now I have my own child we do lots of exciting fun things together like the beach most weekends castles NT and EH and actually engage with him something I never had

The Derwent Pencil Museum.

I only had enough spending money to buy one pencil for myself and I was heartbroken when I lost it a few weeks later.

Blackcats7 · 16/05/2024 21:27

I never had any days out. Not that sort of home. I spent all my weekends and school holidays working at the local riding school in exchange for lessons and spending time with the horses.

I remember the Child Beale Trust! In my memory it was charmingly disheveled- I seem to remember slightly overgrown 18th century Gardens with statues with peeling plaster and exotic birds wandering around- was it really like that? It's still going I think- I bet they've smartened it up.

StarDolphins · 16/05/2024 23:14

I don’t remember going anywhere with my mum apart from sitting in a pub🙄

My lovely amazing grandparents used to take me to winter gardens in Blackpool then we got fish & chips with scraps!

I do so much with my DD. I’m glad to see Morecambe mentioned here as I will be taking my DD on Sat night/Sun after a wedding & we’ve never been so hopefully it will be a good memory for her.

MumofSpud · 17/05/2024 07:57

My favourite memory is a day out whilst on holiday in Cornwall in the 80s
We (me and DB aged about 11/12) played by a stream all day and had a picnic - there was another family there and they had children the same age.
I remember it being idyllic but maybe that's my rose tinted glasses!
This day springs to mind more than holidays we had in the Caribbean/ Disney Land etc. Grin

LittleGreenDuck · 17/05/2024 08:32

@crackofdoom I don't remember the peeling statues but there were definitely exotic birds, particularly peacocks, wandering about. It may well have been dishevelled, but I doubt I would've noticed at that age. This would have been early / mid 80s.
