Edinburgh

Hi. We’ve got a couple of days in Edinburgh coming up. Does anybody have any restaurant recommendations, please? Needs to have plenty of veggie options.

Also here for pub recommendations, please, especially if of historical interest.

Finally, we might have time to see either Stockbridge/Dean village or Leith. Any strong opinions either way?

Thanks in advance!

David Bann's is an excellent modern veggie restaurant off the Royal Mile, and if you like Indian food, there are several great places like Mother India and Tuk Tuk with lots of good veggie options.

I'd recommend Stockbridge and Dean Village over Leith; much more picturesque and loads of good independent shops (including indy bookshops like Golden Hare and Rare Birds).

Historic bars: Cafe Royal is beautiful and very central (opposite Waverley Station) but my favourite is the Bow Bar in Victoria Street.

The Grayson Perry exhibition is still on just now if you want something indoors to occupy you for a couple of hours.

Have a great trip!

This is brilliant, thank you. I should have said that I'd rather avoid fully vegetarian restaurants as DP likes the chance to eat fish when we go out. I'll look at the Indian places online now.

I've already seen the Grayson Perry exhibition, but otherwise that would have been high on my list of things to do!

Thanks especially for the bookshop recommendations and also the bars which I'll google now too.

I’m not totally sure about their veggie offerings but my restaurant recommendations based on where I’ve been recently include Wee Buddha, The Palmerston, Blackbird, Maki and Ramen, Ting Thai Caravan and if you just want nachos in a bar, Tiles (although avoid if rugby on as very busy). Enjoy!

Dishoom is great for veggies.

NotFastButFurious · 10/10/2023 08:12

Stockbridge and Dean village although note that Dean Village isn’t actually a village as such, it’s just an area. It’s a nice walk between the two along the water of leith.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/10/2023 18:41

Thanks for these.

Yes, aware that Dean 'village' is just an extension of town - but it looks pretty.

I'm a bit bored of Dishoom now. It's good for veggies but because it never changes its menu, I've eaten everything I'm interested in eating a number of times now.

Checking out all the other menus now!

Any more ideas very much appreciated. We're hampered by the fact we'll be there on a Monday, when it looks a fair few of the 'best' places are closed. Ideally I'd like an indie and not street food or sharing plates.

They're not independent but Wahaca and Pho work well with both veggies and meat eaters (might be too “street food” though?)
Vesta at the west end has a few veggie and fish options and is independent with added social value!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/10/2023 18:20

Thank you. I definitely don't want a chain.

Vesta could be a lunchtime possibility, thanks. Still struggling to find somewhere nice for the evening.

Apologies, I don't know why my post is hidden - I had linked some restaurant, pub and bar options.

Update: it is there now….🤯

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 11/10/2023 18:42

Kalpna is all-veggie but genuinely amazing food. I know plenty of meat eaters who choose to eat there.

SahliJ · 11/10/2023 18:59

Mash Bar and Mushroom Emporium. Indie, I can remember it opening. You can even visit the mushrooms!😀

Proper comfort food!

Only if your DH like mushrooms.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/10/2023 19:14

These are great. Thank you. OH loves mushrooms!

I want to eat pretty much everything on the Kalpna menu.

And Cannyman's looks great.

There's a Thai place called Chaophraya which we've been to several times which is amazing (not sure about veggie options)

Stockbridge is nice, there's a market there

wildwestpioneer · 11/10/2023 20:12

Find Panda & Co pub, it's quite quirky

Yes! The secret bars….shhhh!😀😉

Yolo12345 · 12/10/2023 00:35

Yes Chaopraya and ask to book a table with a view of the castle - stunning!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/10/2023 06:34

We’ve got Chaopraya in Brum, but I haven’t been to it so that’s actually a good call.

A second for mother India - it's tapas style. Lots of veggie options and if dh wants fish the spiced haddock is amazing.

NotFastButFurious · 12/10/2023 07:37

The Outsider on George IV bridge has some
tables with views of the castle and it’s a bit different.

Igneococcus · 12/10/2023 08:11

The Shelter charity shop in Stockbridge has the most amazing CD section, that was my take home message from my last trip to Edinburgh.
