Hi. We’ve got a couple of days in Edinburgh coming up. Does anybody have any restaurant recommendations, please? Needs to have plenty of veggie options.

Also here for pub recommendations, please, especially if of historical interest.

Finally, we might have time to see either Stockbridge/Dean village or Leith. Any strong opinions either way?

Thanks in advance!

I've just given three million (a very slight exaggeration) t9o a charity shop so I certainly won't be buying any of those. I do like a good charity shop though!

These recommendations are great. I think Mother India and Chaopraya are the favourites so far. OH would be in heaven with the haddock tbh.

There are quite a few charity shops in the same street, and also a shop that made it onto the Times' list of best cheese shops in Scotland, Herbie of Edinburgh. I'm planning to check it out when I'm in Edi next week.
I'm also going to take dp to Armchair bookshop (uphill from Grassmarket), I've never been until dd (student in Edi) took me there last visit.

Quick bump for this, as I still haven't booked anywhere.

Hearing mixed reviews about Mother India, and the Thai place isn't particularly exciting me with its menu. Maybe Kalpna?

Missed this before, sorry. Bookshops and cheese are right up my street!

You might be able to get a booking here www.sixbynico.co.uk/edinburgh/catalonia/, they do veggie and non veggie or you can swap out by the course if you are eating fish.

rookiemere · 23/10/2023 19:42

Oh sorry just seen you fancy Indian. This place www.chaakoo.co.uk/chaakoo-edinburgh has recently opened up on Lothian road, spinach paneer is excellent.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/10/2023 20:25

Don’t necessarily want Indian. Thanks for these. I looked at Six but didn’t really fancy the current menu.

Joining for ideas , hope that’s ok. as I’m also going up to Edinburgh next month. How far in advance to book for restaurants? Couple of days ok?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/10/2023 20:59

I wondered about the Witchery, but no availability on the evening we’re there, unfortunately.

@Cathpot
I tried booking at a Thai place (Nok's Kitchen at the castle, been there before for lunch and like it) on Monday for Friday night (last week, trip didn't actually happen in the end because of Babet) and the only time they would have had space for the three of us was at 17.00 and 17.30. I now booked for the first Friday in November and one time was already unavailable. I'm sure this will be different depending on restaurants but popular places can be booked up early.

dd went for breakfast at Cairngorm Coffee (West End somewhere) and says she had the best cinnamon bun ever there.

We're vegetarian and just back from a few days in Edinburgh.

Only thing I can add to the above is that the vegetarian haggis in the Whiski Rooms was gorgeous.

kikisparks · 24/10/2023 07:13

Seeds for the Soul is great for lunch. Lovely Italian food at Sora Lella and Nova Pizza. The most amazing doughnuts at Considerit.

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 24/10/2023 07:28

The spence is good for fancy and generally has a mix of meat/fish/veggie

second the outsider suggestion

Wedgwood is also lovely but ££

angels with bagpipes

the pakora bar for less formal

howies is a great all rounder with tasty food and not too pricey

dusit doesn’t have the views but is a great Thai

bon vivant is lovely

so many to choose from!

Now this sounds interesting!

Wedgewoord has been one of my contenders for a while.

Angels with Bagpipes sounds great, but the only veggie main they are listing is aubergine and everybody surely knows that aubergine is Satan's vegetable.

The Outsider sounds lovely, but I can't cope with a daily changing menu as I need to know in advance that there's something I can eat. Struggling with eggs, aubergines and tomatoes can make life rather difficult!

Thanks for all of these. Howies/Wedgewood both looking like possibilities.
