Can anyone recommend a nice hotel in Jersey - not too expensive, quiet, family friendly. Or alternatively self catering - hit me with your recommendations please!

We stayed in the Merton during Covid. Kids loved the pool and the weather was great too so we could use outdoor pool too. We found the food very good and the evening entertainment was quite traditional we loved the family quizzes etc. would definitely go back. Rooms are a bit dated but liked the fact the boys had a separate room with bunk beds so not all crammed in together.

Thanks Pootle! I had looked at the Merton but once I read reviews, lots of people complaining about noise at night and lack of sound proofing. How did you find it?

Didn't hear a thing I have to be honest ?! We were top floor I think overlooking the gardens at the back. It was very family friendly and a 5 minute walk to a lovely beach.

We have stayed on jersey in a holiday cottage a few times now. Always used Freedom Holidays to book cottage, very happy.

But there's so many to choose from, depends what you where or what you want and size you need. Location depending on if you have a car etc.

We stayed at the Merton too, but in one of the apartments. It was a few years ago but it was very modern, and the kitchen bit made it easy to have food in the room sometimes. We had breakfast in the hotel a couple of times, too. The pool was a hit. Only thing about the rooms was that the top bunk was very high, fine for slightly older DC buy not little ones.

Merton stayer here too, though it was a few years ago. Kids loved the wave rider and the hotel was decent and within walking distance of the main shops etc.

Anyone else been bothered by noise in the Merton?

beachsandseaicecream - that property looks lovely but pretty much all booked up!

We’d not have a car with us. might consider hiring one but from what I’ve seen it’s a good bus service round the island and we like walking as a family.

Any other good recommendations?

Another fan of the Merton.We stayed in the main hotel in July 2019, had amazing weather. Nice easy walk into St Helier and close to the beach.

We used the pool/ sun loungers most days. Hired a fridge to keep,drinks cool.

Great bus routes around the island. Great memories

Great to hear such positive things about the Merton as some of the reviews are really mixed, particularly of the hotel rooms rather than the suites. Although we aren't really big on places with evening entertainment, the pool and gardens do look lovely

Jersey Heritage does holiday lets - generally interesting buildings. You can stay on an island, in a martello tower, or inside the country life museum with use of the playground in the evening. They may have some availability. They range from quite basic to more luxurious but the listings are clear about which is which.

Thank you, I’ll have a look at that. Hoping not to hire a car as so pricey, so not sure if the more rural self catering might be out as not on the bus route. I’d happily walk, but kids maybe not so keen on that idea!

We also stayed at the Merton. The hotel was great and the food was lovely. The person in the room above ours (we were in a family room) was a little noisy - TV on quite loud at night. We did all manage to get to sleep so it can't have been awful. I'd definitely stay there again.

We too have stayed at the Merton twice. I don't remember any noise, and have enjoyed our time there. You can always ask for a room away from the communal areas when you are booking.

Did you all have access to cars when you were there?

First time I went to Jersey I didn't have my own transport so we used the buses. They were very good.
Second time round we went on the ferry and took our car. We did a lot of walking so only used the car when we wanted to go slightly further afield.

Thanks Jijithecat! I've heard the bus network is very reliable. Just not sure if it might restrict where we can go, outside of St Helier area. Can't believe the prices to hire a car!

All the buses go in and out of St Helier so it’s a pain if you want to go across the island directly, but you can get to most places on a bus you might want to get to other than the more remote beaches (which would still be walkable if you wanted to see them). Some of the buses are more frequent than others so keep an eye on timetables. Taxis are not cheap so use sparingly!

There are very few places in Jersey that are very wild as it’s too small to be that remote, but you can be 20 minutes walk from a bus stop.

You might struggle to book the Merton now - when I looked recently they were full til November but think I was on booking.com rather than direct

L’Horizon is where we always stay. It’s right on the beach, very quiet but child friendly. Probably isn't cheap in season/school holidays though (we usually go when DC has an inset day)

Have you looked at Europcar for car hire? I’ve always found them to be quite reasonable.

L’Horizon will be expensive in the holidays. The Merton is not cheap either though. Jersey’s hotel numbers are shrinking as owners retire and sell up for housing, and the cost of the remaining ones shoots up even further. OP, you might see some cheaper ones but some of them are not places I’d take my kids on holiday. Happy to offer advice.

Gorey has Beachcombers, which has a pool, Beausite, and a couple of other smallish hotels which are decent.

The other place for hotels is St Brelade. It’s a beautiful and very popular beach with some decent places to eat, so worth considering. The only issue is that you would need to catch the bus into town to go to most places if without a car, so your journey times would stack up.

I worked at the Merton way back when and it is without a doubt the best on Jersey for families in terms of facilities. Their sister hotel the Pomme d'Or is right in the heart of St. Helier close to the main bus hub, and guests can also use the Merton's pool facilities. Their family rooms might be better value in the holidays.

Others to consider are the Beausite (car would be handy) and Monterey. Both have indoor and outdoor pools so cater for all weathers.

St Brelades is gorgeous but primarily high end 4 star hotels, aside from the Biarritz which is a lovely 3 star.
