Best Cornish Harbours with walls for jumping off into the sea from

I'm obsessing about starting to plan our summer holiday. The highlight of any Cornish break for my DC is jumping off a harbour wall into the sea. We've been to

  • Charlestown
  • Mousehole
  • St Ives
  • Polruan

and through obsessive google maps usage I've always managed to pick a holiday location with harbour walls that are suitable!

I was wondering if anyone else has DC with similar views, and if they'd recommend any other locations?

Could you not find a swimming pool with a diving board instead?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 11/01/2023 19:38

It’s arrogance. That and a total disregard for the RNLI who will be hauling her out of the sea.

I don’t understand why the OP is so bloody thick to think she knows better than local SW folk who understand the perils of the sea and the dangers involved.

GoldenCupidon · 11/01/2023 19:40

I've seen people jumping a lot at Lamorna but am not that familar with it.

Only do this if you want to die, just under the surface there is the old bit of the quay that fell off, vast slumps of granite.

"As someone who lives in the areas discussed, raising kids here and having worked in Emergency Services for 20+ years, I stand by my posts and resent the tone they've been responded to in. I've looked after these kids and their distraught family and friends when it goes wrong."

Me too. And I disagree with you. The tone originated from the OP and her 🤣🤣 emojis. Not to mention the massive regular RNLI donation drip feed. Yeah right.

GoldenCupidon · 11/01/2023 19:42

I agree with the OP though than jumping from the quay at Mousehole and St Ives, as long as you pay attention to tides and other harbour users, is pretty safe. Generations of kids done it with very very few injuries.

I think we agree!

"Pearl clutchers", eh.

You might have some sensible points to make about children learning to do potentially risky things safely, @BernardBlacksMolluscs, but this one makes you look like a complete and utter wazzock.

megletthesecond · 11/01/2023 19:45

None of them you dick. Give your head a wobble.

LordSugarTits · 11/01/2023 19:53

@WaffleDogBlanket I can't read 🤣 sorry, my bad

LordSugarTits · 11/01/2023 19:57

Yeah, go jump off Southsea pier. Nobody ever gets hurt there

I live to the SW. The tomb stoning teens do not have local knowledge. They’re idiots with nothing better to do. The ones that do it are the kids with little parental supervision who roam the seafront all day in the summer. They are the trouble makers who’s parents don’t give a shit. My DH used to be a trauma nurse at Derriford hospital (served SW Devon and E Cornwall). He’s got a lot of experience o tomb stoning injuries.

Last death down here, off the Hoe, for TS was a man 5 times over the limit, 6 years ago.
They do have local knowledge and are not pack animals roaming the streets.... well, my DD isn't when she tried it... she works at Derriford and has yet to see a TS injury....

There was a local study done and in a 6m period 6 injuries, 3 whilst drunk, 1 serious spinal & 3 of those 6 were jumping from a v low height.

1000s of jumps are done each summer.

But like i said, OP should stick to coaststeering.

Bosk · 11/01/2023 20:16

Tell you what, OP, why don't you ask the experts?
Cornwall Harbours

ememem84 · 11/01/2023 20:25

I’m in jersey and we used to do this all the time when we were kids. only at high tides though. And never when boats were coming in and out. Small harbours so small boats and easy to see them moving.

the jump in never bothered me so much. More the climb back up the harbour ladder….

Not a harbor but: Goldiggins Pool

It's ok! I got you!

Senseofsomething · 11/01/2023 21:16

If repeatedly jumping safely into cold sea water is the aim a day out at Jubilee Pool in Pz would be fun. No real risk and lifeguards on duty. I don’t know if they still do day tickets though, they used to then timed sessions became the thing because of Covid. A whole day there sunbathing and jumping in for a swim every now and again used to be fabulous.

Jumping in the deep end obviously!

faffadoodledo · 11/01/2023 21:36

@Senseofsomething that's a great idea. It's gorgeous!

it looks lovely. there's a sea fed lido near us, and they're strangely magical to swim in I think

Jumping off a harbour wall (into deep water with no obstacles on the sea bed in a safe manner well clear of passing boats) is an exhilarating experience.
I let my children do it, I do it.
Like bouldering or tree climbing or other 'extreme' sports, it's a great way to learn how to assess risk and deal with adrenaline and peer pressure.

Its not remotely comparable to tree climbing in terms of risk

It does not in any way develop risk assessing skills as the risks are absolutely impossible to assess

Every single time I hear of a death by tombstoning I am incredulous that there are any parents who haven't instilled the basic fundamental knowledge into their children that this is stupid and lethal

I never actually thought I'd come across a real parent really saying they think this is ok ( if you are)

Nimbostratus100 · 11/01/2023 21:57

A boy from my school broke his neck doing this the year after A levels.

He was saved from drowning by others who risked their lives to reach him when they saw him go in but not come out.

He survived a further ten years or so in a wheel chair with some sort of mechanical breathing aid, like a mobile ventilator. He could talk a bit, but was hard to understand unless you knew him well

tickychicky · 11/01/2023 22:06

Try parachute jumping?

LubaLuca · 11/01/2023 22:08

Bloody hell op, many congratulations on having a sense of adventure, but you're being incredibly cavalier about the risk this involves.

Tombstoning isn't a sensible thing to do by anyone's definition, and donations to the RNLI aren't like a Christmas club.

Yes hello, real parent, Cornwall local, who jumps off high things into the sea on a regular basis, with my children and friends.
