Best Cornish Harbours with walls for jumping off into the sea from

I'm obsessing about starting to plan our summer holiday. The highlight of any Cornish break for my DC is jumping off a harbour wall into the sea. We've been to

  • Charlestown
  • Mousehole
  • St Ives
  • Polruan

and through obsessive google maps usage I've always managed to pick a holiday location with harbour walls that are suitable!

I was wondering if anyone else has DC with similar views, and if they'd recommend any other locations?

this!

But you’re not doing ‘this’, you’re using Google Maps to find ones that look okay.
That’s a far cry from actual knowledge and planning 🙄

There really does need to be some form of common sense test before you’re allowed to have children.

3beesinmybonnet · 11/01/2023 11:49

How about sending them coasteering with an outdoor adventure sports centre?

Jesus. It's really dangerous. I was watching kids doing this in St Ives last summer, with my heart in my mouth.

Dane at Mevagissy. But the children were clearly local. So hopefully knew what they were doing.

Tombstoning and hoofing yourself off a harbour wall that you know the depth and conditions of are wildly different.

What do you think we all do with our time in Devon and Cornwall in the summer as teens...?

OP Clovelly is a good one, although it's not Cornwall, it's just over the border in Devon.

Yes, I suspect the pearl clutchers may be picturing something quite different to what my DC actually get up to!

very helpful, thank you

Find an actual sports centre that specialises in this sort of thing. Don't just jump into random harbours strangers have recommended.

Kids do this in our seaside town. They unfortunately don’t survive. It’s so dangerous and irresponsible. Just don’t.

None of them?

A great common sense test is whether it is safe to jump off this harbour wall or not.

WaffleDogBlanket · 11/01/2023 11:57

I live in the SW where people do this all the time, often jumping literally Infront of the wall with the massive signs asking them not to....

Everyone knows the story of the teen boy here who had to have extreme genital surgery after the force of the water caused severe injury. It was a juno he and his friends had done many times before and he just over rotated ..

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 11/01/2023 11:58

Sometimes we go boating or climbing too, or walk up really tall hills

it’s amazing my DC are still alive really

Although I don’t want to down play the dangers (and don’t when I’m talking to my DC either)

We were at St Ives harbour a couple of summers ago where people were taking pics of their kids lined up, jumping in a row. Huge signs up asking them not to (probably also visible in pics) and the harbour master team in boats shouting at them asking them not to.

So selfish. So rude. So stupid.

Your pro life stance is only for distressed pregnant women ....not for keeping kids alive once they’re older. Funny that.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 11/01/2023 12:04

It baffles me that any parent would think this is a good idea. Maybe that’s because I live in a seaside town where we think this sort of behaviour from tourists is ridiculous. The RNLI call outs always increase in the summer months. It’s scary when you know how dangerous the sea actually is. Even on a calm day.

My DC do loads of adventurous sports. Have grown up spending every weekend on Dartmoor/Beach/River. I am no pearl clutcher or helicopter parent.

I can still respect the very real concerns of local harbour masters and RNLI teams though.

They call it tombstoning for a reason, mate.

I was literally going to type this exact same sentence! But maybe not the mate part!

@BernardBlacksMolluscs Sennen Cove is a good one - though quite high!

Though maybe judging by the posts here maybe you should just get your DC an XBox and some cotton wool instead...

Commonly done at Porthleven by locals and holidaymakers. I'm not a fan personally. My kids were very confident in the water but I didn't encourage it. I think the problem is that so many with mixed abilities line up to do it and there's often silliness involved - pushing people in when they're not ready. There's a lot of bravado and showing off too. It's not dangerous per se but can become so.

Have you tried Coast-steering, OP?

Lots of companies run it in Cornwall.

Such good fun, very exhilarating and extremely knackering!

I saw loads of people (including quite young children) doing it at Porthleven last year. I'm shit at swimming and don't even like jumping into a poolBlush
