Best Cornish Harbours with walls for jumping off into the sea from

I'm obsessing about starting to plan our summer holiday. The highlight of any Cornish break for my DC is jumping off a harbour wall into the sea. We've been to

  • Charlestown
  • Mousehole
  • St Ives
  • Polruan

and through obsessive google maps usage I've always managed to pick a holiday location with harbour walls that are suitable!

I was wondering if anyone else has DC with similar views, and if they'd recommend any other locations?

ps. Raised in Cornwall and taught to be respectful of the sea from day dot.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 11/01/2023 16:50

Just a thought, could you attach a bungee cord to DC, that way when they jump off the harbour wall they will be whipped back, in the blink of an eye, ready to start again. Fantastic!

Just had another thought, as the kinetic energy in the bungee cord will diminish with each 'bunge', they might not return to their starting point and consequently may just be bounced off the harbour wall with ever deceasing force until all the kinetic energy has been absorbed.

So hold your horses - I think this may need a bit more thought. I'm going to dig out the old baby bouncer and try some experiments with the cat. I'll get back to you if sucessful.

Fucking idiots. Those of us who have family members in the RNLI really hope you're going to make a massive fucking donation. You don't go jumping off harbour walls and taking your kids with you.

It's not the same as rugby. What physical danger is there to someone transporting an injured or dead child from a rugby pitch? You want volunteers to risk their lives to rescue you. We see this every summer here on the coast and it's so fucking selfish and idiotic. I hope someone tells you to your face next time, I would and have done.

WaffleDogBlanket · 11/01/2023 16:34

Absolutely.

And those of us who live next to the coast in the SW are upright pearl clutchers raising screen addicted kids. Apparently.

The OP is determined to let her kids jump off Harbour walls, despite local people, RNLI, Coastguards asking not to.

I personally know people who had to deal with the aftermath of these sort of tragic events and it affects people massively. But as long as the OP has a good holi-bobs in Cornwall….

Trinity65 · 11/01/2023 17:05

Seriously?

Wow.

Julen7 · 11/01/2023 17:06

OP seems to think people pointing out the idiocy of this pursuit (not to mention the risk to others) is funny.

LordSugarTits · 11/01/2023 17:14

"😂mumsnet oh how I love thee!"

Yes OP, hilarious isn't it. You go lob them kids off the Cornish harbour wall

amp.theguardian.com/uk/2007/aug/03/jamessturcke

What a fucking giggle.

As for "calculated risk taking". Fine, drown, smash your spine up, I don't care. I do care, however, that you're choosing to do something that puts my husbands life at risk when he comes out to rescue you.

Stop making "calculated" risks (by looking at Google maps 😒) with other peoples lives.

The OP seems to be one of those maddening breeds of arrogant, selfish, entitled and seemingly stupid.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 11/01/2023 17:18

Yes, send us the bill when you haven't worked out the tide times and they break their necks...

Movinghouseatlast · 11/01/2023 17:20

Polperro has an outer harbour wall which goes into deep sea. During the summer locals and visitors jump off this wall very safely as there is nothing in the way. My heart does go in my mouth when I see people do rather same on the inner harbour wall which can be shallow.

devildeepbluesea · 11/01/2023 17:26

@cantba was just going to post about Hope Cove. If visiting for the day though, be careful- the company that runs the pay and display bays and car park are total bastards and loads of folk have had a ticket despite perfectly legal parking.

Redblanky · 11/01/2023 17:27

I've always assumed those jumping off harbour walls were locals with information about safe spots passed down through the generations.

How do you know if its safe before you try?

Nope

carlylovespies · 11/01/2023 17:52

Another recommendation for St Mawes. The Harbour but also Summers Beach as there's a floating jetty thing that you can swim to and then jump off.

No, the locals are the ones in the lifeboats asking holiday makers not to jump.

smileladiesplease · 11/01/2023 18:02

Midland girl here so treat the sea with utter respect. Always watch the flags and follow the rules. You flabbergast me op.
We were in Cornwall last summer had one of those really rough sea days. We watched from a very safe distance while a couple next to us let their kids paddle in these seriously huge waves and the tide was going out. The life guard came on a buggy and torn them a new one. Utter stupidity snd terrible example to children.
You are crazy op

I bet your dh hard pressed to keep his cool with some of these idiots

HarrysGingerBeard · 11/01/2023 18:10

My friend died last year after being confined to a wheelchair after tombstoning. His injuries led to his death years later. But yeah it's just harmless fun Hmm@BernardBlacksMolluscs

Having seen a child being recovered from the sea doing just this , it is seared on my mind.
I wonder if his mother thought it was good fun too 😢
Utterly idiotic.

SequoiaSal · 11/01/2023 18:11

Yeah we love tourists like you. Because our friends and family members who are lifeguards and RNLI volunteers enjoy risking their lives rescuing over privileged ignorant twats.

I always thought it was stupid teenagers. I didn't realise their parents encouraged them.

thepatronsaintofbubblewrap · 11/01/2023 18:13

Literally turns my stomach thinking of it.

Yes that makes more sense.. I've never allowed my DC to participate (TBH I don't think they've ever wanted to) but I have often wondered who these children are who seem to have so much freedom/so little supervision and assumed they must be people used to a more rural life.

Surely there's somewhere more convenient for your dc to break limbs and/or drown?
