Unusual Days Out

Neowwwm · 04/07/2022 20:18

Can you help compile a list of unique UK days out beyond the obvious? I love when we discover a completely different type of day trip but usually it's better known by locals. The sort of things that I class as being quite
unique days out:

Crocky Trail
Forbidden Corner
Wookey Hole
Great Orme Railway

So not the average theme park/national trust/zoo type days

Witchcraft museum is different, not for everyone though

Puzzlewood in the Forest of Dean.

Eden Camp ww2 museum near Malton .

Both memorable for being very different from anything else .

Also a good day out for us is various activities in a small market town like Malton : local or charity shopping , visit to small local museum , short scenic walk / trail , try out the local park, picnic or local pub/cafe lunch.

Hack Green nuclear bunker - very interesting, but chilling.

We went to Three Shires Head recently, that was good. Hiking area with streams and waterfalls.

Shamelessly placemarking - awesome thread!

Eagle Heights, near Orpington/Sevenoaks. The display is brilliant.

Never been to Patterson's Spade Mill but I would think it's pretty unusual.

Marble Arch Caves are pretty fab.

Anglesey sea zoo is fascinating. They breed seahorses and also lobsters.

Game Fair- the Midlands Game Fair is the biggest
Ploughing match- not as big a deal as the ploughing championships in Ireland but still fun day out
Forestry show- the APF is the biggest and you can camp.
The World Clydesdale Show is on in Scotland this year
cattle and sheep breed society show+sales are open to the public and free in.

Nuclear power station visitor centres including guided walking tours!

I've not been, so can't elaborate further, but a friend of mine took her class to Sizewell B and said it was interesting.

Thanks. Have just booked a tour off the back of this. Just pending security checks! The teens are like Hmm !

I believe it's closed to the public now - went to it years ago (was really interesting) but last year we went to Cornwall & I looked into visiting it with DC & it wasn't open.

Oh shame! We loved Goonhilly, it had a sort of Teletubbies surreal vibe to it. Also liked the adder warnings.

Adelais · 15/07/2022 15:01

King Arthur’s Labyrinth, Wales

"So not the average theme park/national trust/zoo type days"

I would (and do) avoid places that have any kind of commercial connection. Don't pay to enter or take park - seek unusual places and people to spend time in and explore. Find local places you have never been too. Seek out the unusual garden or artist open day, the village show (I am still 3-Carrots on a plate winner, 2010).

Take part in crazy sports events - I have competed in the World Stone Skimming Championships on a small island in Scotland. I have walked hills and canoed rivers. I have learned to fish.

All so much better than joining the masses queueing up for another paid for experience.

jellybeanteaparty · 15/07/2022 19:14

Another one for the crocky trail ( awarded best aunt award after taking nephew and niece there) bonfire night Tar barrel rolling at ottery st Mary is something else. Anyone mentioned the Viking Graves at Heysham? Seen on the cover of a black sabbath album no less.

The Cross Bay Walk led by the Queens Guide to the Sands is good in Morecambe.

Great thread Grin

Bedgebury Pinetum, Bedgebury Kent. You can walk or bike about (either hire one there or take your own), has lovely cafe, a number of really good playgrounds, Go Ape both adult and junior.

Chatham Dockyard - you can easily spend the day there, amongst other things has an excellent exhibition about HMS Victory and you can have a tour of a submarine.

The Observatory Science Centre, Herstmonceux- nearly every exhibit is interactive, plenty of space of picnic or use small cafe.

Eastbourne Mini Railway
