Unusual Days Out

Can you help compile a list of unique UK days out beyond the obvious? I love when we discover a completely different type of day trip but usually it's better known by locals. The sort of things that I class as being quite
unique days out:

Crocky Trail
Forbidden Corner
Wookey Hole
Great Orme Railway

So not the average theme park/national trust/zoo type days

Oasis Camel park at Halesworth , you can book experiences to add on like llama walking / camel riding / meeting meerkats .

Thecrystalempire · 06/07/2022 20:30

If you like the crocky trail then Manley mere is also good and close by.

Yes to the Devil’s Porridge Museum - and if you like things to go with a bang then there’s the Explosion Museum in Gosport and the Royal Gunpowder Mills in Waltham Abbey.

Also the submarine museum in Gosport is excellent - as is the entire Historic Dockyard at Portsmouth.

Crossness pumping station in London.

National Mining Museum Scotland.

Computer Museum in Cambridge (and tag on Bletchley Park for a thoroughly enjoyable nerdy day out).

DH still has nightmares about Diggerland.

Any recommendations for Wokingham or surrounding area?

Ylvamoon · 07/07/2022 06:54

Not a place but geocashing is cheap fun for all the family.
It's basically a treasure hunt.
Great for exploring your surroundings or even go a bit further!

@Neowwwm
I'm afraid I have nothing to contribute but just came on to say one of the best threads ever!! Smile

AmberGer · 07/07/2022 07:01

I came here to say puzzlewood but it's already been mentioned upthread.

Crich Tramways Village

Some places that have stood out to me over the years:

Hidden Valley (Launceston, Cornwall) - we had a great day out here with children aged 3-14!
Forbidden Corner (Leyburn, North Yorkshire) - again something for kids and adults of all ages
Crypt of St Leonard (Hythe, Kent) - a huge collection of ancient bones, well worth a visit
The Garden of Cosmic Speculation (Holywood, Dumfries and Galloway) - it's a shame it's only open a few days per year!

ABlindAssassin · 07/07/2022 07:06

A boat trip to see puffins at the Farne Islands (the islands themselves are closed at the minute but you can still go on boat trips around them).

Zip World Fforest Coaster near Betws-y-Coed.

The Alnwick Garden and Alnwick Castle

Lowther Castle

Brimham Rocks

PritiPatelsMaker · 07/07/2022 07:10

Not a full day but walking the Roman Walls at Chester is free.

ChangedMyNamrButStillMe · 07/07/2022 07:13

I still have yet to find anywhere as mental as Wookey Hole. When I went there were shivering fairies wandering the gardens, enormous dinosaurs, a 4D cinema with a film about a bear, dinosaurs, a circus themed cafe that had a pirate themed menu and the creepiest ever soft play in an attic and surrounded by Victorian animatronic slot machines.

Retrievemysanity · 07/07/2022 07:20

Severn Valley Steam Railway
Chatsworth House and Gardens (my favourite day out as a child)
City kayak tours on Birmingham’s canals

PritiPatelsMaker · 07/07/2022 07:23

Panorama Walk in Barmouth is stunning. Well worth the rather short walk.

Ghostofborleyrectory · 07/07/2022 07:25

Honister Slate Mine and its via ferrata. East Lancashire Steam Train, Stone Circle hunting in Cumbria.

emmathedilemma · 07/07/2022 07:49

Jupiter artland

AuntieDolly · 07/07/2022 07:52

Mud larking on the Thames foreshore

Dilbertian · 07/07/2022 07:59

Walk across the seabed to Looe Island. It can only be done when the lowest tides fall at the right times of daylight and good weather. We did it a few years ago and it was great fun. You need to wear shoes, but don't bother with wellies, as the water at its deepest is above your knees.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/07/2022 08:19

See if there is a Luminari touring near you.

WWRGD · 07/07/2022 09:35

Canoe down the Severn or through London on the Thames
Butser Ancient Farm near Portsmouth
Rollright stones Oxfordshire/Warwickshire border, Long Meg and her Daughters in Cumbria
Go to an open air theatre, especially Minack in Cornwall
Go to a drive in cinema
Shipwreck museum in Cornwall

gracelessladyhottramp · 07/07/2022 10:56

A pinball museum in Ramsgate (it's really just a retro arcade). Very fun though!!

Funf · 09/07/2022 18:26

You mentioned the Great Orm Railway, the Toll Road around the Orm is really nice as is Angel Bay on the Little Orm, but the Tourists just all head for the Great Orm

Funf · 09/07/2022 18:29

Often we need to re visit places we think we know and root out stuff to see and do, no one website can begin to hold all the info
Look at Llandudno and I bet you missed much of this on a visit, its a great area

Ukholidaylover · 11/07/2022 19:32

Just bumping as I love this thread!
