Things to do in Liverpool

After GREAT success with an old thread about Belfast please help plan my trip to Liverpool!

Arrive sun 20th leaving Tuesday 22nd, stopping at the resident. Me, x2 boys 10 and 15. We don't have a car as travelling by train.

I've booked the sky bar and a light show at the cathedral so far.

Where shall we eat and what shall we do?!

TIA we're very excited!

Do some research on the time traveling streets!!

Filthyslattern · 12/02/2022 17:35

Maritime museum is fab. World museum also good.
Trip on a ferry. Meal at albert dock and a walk by the water.

Filthyslattern · 12/02/2022 17:36

Cathedrals are beautiful if you like looking at a church.
Beatles museum if you're interested in that kind of thing.

atomicnotsoblonde · 12/02/2022 17:39

Thank you I will look!

Request from the teen to go to an 'old fashioned' traditional pub. I think he means like the wood panelled ones you get in London. Anywhere with live music - ideally guitars or a dj a bonus.

We're a foodie drink family and like culture with cocktails (mocktails) and great food. Very happy to walk decent distances about the city.

Don't mind spending to make it a fab time. We deserve a treat.

I love this pub in Liverpool. It's right near the World Museum if you go there.

Not sure about live music, however!

Takingabreakagain · 12/02/2022 17:55

Matthew Street has some great pubs and there's bound to be live music at at least one during your stay. I think some do daytime music so you'd be able to take your DC.

The philharmonic pub on Hope street ( between the two cathedral s ) is a lovely pub and has fab marble loos .
Ferry cross the Mersey
Maritime
Museum
Albert dock
Bold street for great restaurants, very buzzy at the weekend , bohemian/ studenty vibe
Bombed out church ( st Luke’s ) shows / music of an evening , Google what’s on
Tour of st Georges hall , used to b a court house / with cells

itrytomakemyway · 12/02/2022 18:04

If you go to the World Museum try to book a slot in the Planetarium.

Williamson Tunnels get amazing reviews - not been myself but plan to!

Take a ferry across the Mersey.

If the weather is good Sefton Park is nice.

Albert Docks are lovely but we always end up waiting ages for food there. We like Grilla. If you want a lovely pub try the Philharmonic. The toilets are amazing!

AdaColeman · 12/02/2022 18:22

Another vote for the Philharmonic Dining Rooms (pub) for its spectacular Victorian tile work, especially in the gentlemen' toilets.

The Roscoe Head in Roscoe Street is a cosy little traditional bar.
Cains Brewery Village often has events on that the teens might like.

Liverpool has the oldest China Town in Europe, with a wide range of types of restaurant, worth a wander through if you are nearby.

These sound perfect we'll have a look. I'm on my own so I need a plan of where we go and if I've got that then we're good.

I really want to make it work for the kids. I'm NHS and Covid has been awful for them with my work and being on my own, so I really want to make it fab for them

Thank you all so much for the ideas so far!!

The city centre is compact and easily walkable
I checked where ur hotel is and u are ideally placed for cathedrals , philharmonic, bold street , china town , and a short walk to the Mersey and Albert dock

Not sure if u will have time but a trip to Crosby to see the gormley statues ) if that’s ur thing ) can be quite eirrie in certain tides / lights , but please check tides , as I didn’t and they were pretty
Much submerged lol

DeckardK · 12/02/2022 18:57

Just walking around is fantastic. Lots of art at Anfield too if you are footy fans.

There's loads to do in the city. If they are in to gaming there is an arcade gaming cafe in the cains brewery in the Baltic quarter, and loads of great food places, and there is also lots of food places and indoor crazy golf in Liverpool one.

If they are in to movies you can book on a tv and film scene tour round the city. Several scenes of the new Batman were filmed here, and some of fantastic beasts and lots of other stuff too. There's also a board game cafe called sugar and dice, and a cat cafe. And you can book a guided spooky ghost walk round the city. And tours of the Williamson tunnels, which are a huge network of tunnels built under the city in the early 1900's, but no one is sure why really other than Williamson was a bit eccentric.

Peter Kavanaghs pub in the Georgian quarter is lovely, in fact the whole Georgian quarter is gorgeous. And the Philarmonic pub is beautiful, the mens toilets are grade 1 listed. Hope street also has some nice places to eat, as does Bold street.

bravotango · 12/02/2022 19:10

The Caledonia pub in the Georgian Quarter often has live music on - you could go for a Chinese (or eat anywhere on Hardman st) and then go there afterwards for some music. The Tate is good. Other nice places to eat - Maray if you want to be on the Albert Dock, leaf is good for lunches. Good view of the city from the Central Library, worth stopping in if you're going to the world museum. If the weather is really nice then you could take the train from central to St Michaels and have a walk in Sefton Park via Lark Lane.

SometimesRavenSometimesParrot · 12/02/2022 19:22

Could get early dinner at the quarter (gorgeous independent Italian), walk back up hope street to the Phil dining rooms before your cathedral light show?

Visit the bombed out church and then eat at big bowl or Tokyo before strolling along to look at the Chinese arch

Time travelling street is bold street, lovely to have a walk down and close to the above.

Docks are great, museum of Liverpool is better than maritime imo but depends on what you’re interested in!

For pubs there’s also the grapes!

MercedesBenz · 12/02/2022 19:42

If ur boys are into thefootball you can do a stadium tour , I checked anfield , availability on 21st , didn’t check other days or goodison but believe it is v good .

Way too invested in this thread 🤗

Toddlerteaplease · 12/02/2022 19:50

Moose coffee on hope or Dale street is great for breakfast

Brilliant. A teenager without breakfast is like root canal without gas!!!

It looks as though there is a new exhibition of giant inflatable sculptures opening on Friday, in the courtyard of The Bluecoat Art Centre, which isn’t very far at all from your hotel in Seel Street.
So it might be fun to have a stroll down there if it’s on your route to somewhere else, open 11am to 5pm. Unfortunately, it seems to be closed on Mondays, but you might be able to squeeze it in on your first or last day.

SometimesRavenSometimesParrot · 12/02/2022 22:35

The Italian is called the quarter. It’s next to Blackburne house

StScholastica · 13/02/2022 10:10

We love the Egg Cafe off Bold Street. It's vegetarian but even the meat eaters we have taken there have loved it. Don't be put off by the shabby exterior or flights of stairs. The food is great and has won lots of awards and atmosphere is very chilled and it's so reasonable with pricing. Grin
