A group of friends have given us a very generous gift of a night away to mark a special occasion. They were nervous about a voucher in the current climate so have given us the cash. Which is great because we can go anywhere!
We are happy to add some money to it for the right place, but might tag on an extra night so I'd say budget is £150 to £200 a night.

Our usual approach would be to choose the location and find a nice hotel nearby. But then I thought it might be good to choose a fabulous hotel in a place we might not have considered.

Would want it to be expensive because it's a lovely hotel, not because it is an average hotel e.g. in the centre of London.

Have spent a lot of time in London with work so wouldn't have this night away there. We also wouldn't go as far as Cornwall for a short break.would prefer somewhere different to where we have been over last few years ( so probably not Dorset, New Forest, East. Sussex and Norfolk although would consider for the perfect hotel) Otherwise happy to go pretty much anywhere.
A decent pool, inside or out would be a bonus.
Suggestions for places you have stayed or know people who have raved about a certain place would be very welcome.
Thank you

Great thread for hotel inspiration!

For that budget (do you want to top it up much or not?) I'd look at:

The Gallivant - beautiful rooms and seafood on camber sands, no pool mind.

I know you said not London but the Bethnal Green Town Hall hotel is fantastic and very reasonable in a cool part of London. Stunning hotel, amazing restaurant. Pool!

Watching with interest to see where you choose!

Please don't go to Crazy Bear. It's style over substance and just not special at all.
Biggest rip off going.

Not sure you'll quite manage on your budget, but Alexander House is beautiful and has a lovely spa and excellent restaurant.

Brimstone Hotel in the Lake District. It's adults only and has some amazing rooms

Tuddenham Mill in Suffolk. Beautiful

@katy1213

I think you're seriously under-estimating the cost of beautiful hotels.
I agree....sadly But £200 a night doesn't get you much these days !!!

What about a really nice pub with rooms? You might be able to find something pretty good in that budget. They are actually my preference anyway, I much prefer a more chilled vibe than somewhere as formal as Grantley, etc, etc as nice as they are (and pricey).

Gleneagles!!
Chewton Glen (but you said not that area)
Check out Mr and Mrs Smith.

Love this place:

Great for days out in the Peaks

Seconded (not just because I had my wedding reception there) beautiful boutique and should fall within your budget.

I too think your best bet is a nice pub with rooms at that budget (sadly). The Crown in Amersham is nice and cosy in the courtyard rooms, and there's a brilliant restaurant over the road called Artichoke. Have been for dinner at the crab and lobster, which was lovely. Kingham Plough good food. I've seen rooms at Middleton Lodge on secret escapes for less than market rate before. You'll get more for your money up north I think.

The Devonshire Arms in Bolton Abbey has a nice relaxed feel and decent spa and food.
May be over budget though.

Bovey Castle on Dartmoor is heavenly. We've had some amazing stays there. Food is sublime; lovely spa and pool; and great walks right on the doorstep.

Combe Grove just outside Bath. Similar to the above, tbh.

The Samling, Windermere is on my lotto win list.

goldpendant · 26/05/2021 22:58

For gorgeous pub with lovely rooms try the Wheatsheaf in Northleach, Cotswolds- also beautiful!

Bunny2021 · 26/05/2021 23:01

Le Manoir is the most amazing place but no pool.

Coworth Park has a lovely spa.

The Rose in Deal has the most amazing restaurant. There are also lots of other places in Deal which are really lovely.

Mr & Mrs Smith is always a good place to browse for ideas.

bellsbuss · 26/05/2021 23:03

The Newt in Somerset, The Pig at Pensford, Manor House at Castle Combe, Calcot Manor, Lydon Arms Broadway.

bellsbuss · 26/05/2021 23:04

Sorry only just saw you had put a budget. Think you will struggle with that.

Just don’t look at The Rose anytime this summer (golf) - it’s about £600 a room!

Le Manoir Aux Quat’ Saisons is crazy expensive! Why is anyone suggesting that? The OP has been clear about her budget. Does nobody read her posts?

PurpleSunrise · 26/05/2021 23:20

Just looked up Grantley Hall - what’s a robe menu and a pillow menu??

TH22 · 26/05/2021 23:21

It’s what you get for your £700 (which is what you would have to pay for a Friday night in November!)
NCkitchen · 26/05/2021 23:37

Private stately home including 3 course meal

carltontowers.co.uk/exclusive-stately-stays/

But not much to do nearby.

Ravenspeckingearly · 26/05/2021 23:47

The Newt is insanely over rated and Combe grove manor in bath is pretty scanky.
